***Andrew Ebbett Claimed By Chicago***
THE TELETYPE:
Ducks center Andrew Ebbett was claimed by Chicago from waivers this morning. According to Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations David McNab, Anaheim waived the University of Michigan product to make room for defenseman Brendan Mikkelson.
The 26 year-old was a regular in the Ducks lineup last season, playing 48 games (8+24=32) and all 13 playoff games (1+2=3) in the NHL and only 28 games in Iowa. Ebbett initially signed with Anaheim in 2007, after playing a one-year contract for Ottawa with their AHL club in Binghamton. The Ducks signed him to a two-year renewal (475,000 and 500,000 NHL salary) in 2008.

Even if he’s rotating, like Brookbank and Boynton are, it’ll be good for him to be getting ready for every game and playing with the club rather than being in the AHL. I think Ebbett couldn’t get a spot in the forward rotation with Nokelainen and Christensen playing so well.

I think it’s pretty bad losing Ebbett. He demonstrated he can play at this level. Marchant-Artyukhin-Lupul might look good, but Ebbett-Marchant-Brown was causing problems when they played. I don’t think Ebbett has the finishing ability that people were hoping he’d develop, but he has strong play making skills. I think Ebbett was a great compliment to Selanne last year, and if Koivu doesn’t comeback we might have to put too much faith in Deschamps to carry a second line, and we’ll be wishing we didn’t have to pay for a player like Ebbett.
Well don’t you think Christensen outbid him for the position? He’s just as cheap, maybe a better playmaker, a hair slower but now a superior defender. I think management can get Christensen cheap next year, especially if they keep rotating him.

I don’t know about that. Christensen is good, but I think Ebbett is better. Someone care to explain to me why we need 8 defensemen on our 23 man roster? Once Wisniewski gets back, I don’t really see a need for Mikkelson anymore. To me it seems more advantageous to have Ebbett on the 23 man roster than Mikkelson.
Well I remember Carlyle saying during training camp that he was looking to have a d-man who could also play up front. So my guess is we might be seeing Brookbank of Mikk take some shifts at forward down the line.
Yeah, that hits it right on the head. During the last games of the preseason, Carlyle said it was important to have a defenseman who could play forward. Brookbank has done it before and we tried Mikkelson there at the end of the pre-season.
