***Artyukhin Suspended For Hit On Niskanen***
THE TELETYPE:
The NHL has suspended Ducks Right Winger Evgeny Artyukhin for three games for a hit on Dallas blueliner Matt Niskanen in the 2nd Period of last night's game.
No penalty was called on the play, but the league has since characterized the hit as a slew foot, a violation of NHL Rule 52.1:
52.1 Slew-footing - Slew-footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him, or pushes an opponent’s upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent’s feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice.

Right call by the NHL.
He definitely took his legs out from under him.
I was at that game and that lame ass banging on the glass was going so, the entire game! No matter what was going on.
I sometimes wonder if the NHL should implement a hockey iq test for people purchasing tickets.

That was a fast post. I was just about to post this in the FanPosts section

Not fast enough. When I signed on to write it, I saw SK had commented on it. If she’d fanposted it, I would have just promoted it to front page.

SORRY! I thought it would have been discovered by the time I got around to it!
Ugh, I guess I don’t agree. I think big body plus smaller guy with some forward movement along the boards is going to lead to something like this.
I saw your comment in the other area about the right leg…I guess the angles are just difficult to see, but ehhhhh, It just seems like such a toss up!

No worries on the fanpost. I was just feeling sort of lazy.
The thing about that right leg is it qualifies as a leg or foot. If they’d made contact hip to hip and Niskanen’s leg had raised naturally, I’d say it wasn’t a slew foot. But Artyukhin would have trouble making his case on that video because he hits him with such a wide stance. If he hit him legs together, even if NIskanen’s leg raised and he was concussed on the back of his head, clean hit.
But it is borderline enough to where it would get by without video replay. The referees couldn’t be sure how the hit happened; you see guys go horizontal on clean hits all the time. And slew footing usually happens much slower than that.

I should clarify that I don’t think Artyukhin’s right leg comes out in an intentional kicking motion. I think he was turning to finish the check, but he knew his stance was wide and that leg was going to end up behind Niskanen. And as far as I’m concerned, a stationary leg is much more useful in slew-footing someone so I disagree with the commentary on the video talking about how he “kicks his legs out from under him” etc. You don’t need to Cobra Kai sweep-the-leg to slew foot someone.

Well we should have about 10 few penalty minutes over the next 3 games.

Maybe. With Carter out, we might have to call up someone. Maybe a three game stint for Sharp? Could be good for the lineup to have a hungry AHLer in there.

Perfect outlook on the situation!
Get a young’n up here and let’s see what they can do!
Sharp, McMillan, or Beleksey?

If we’re looking for scoring, Sexton makes sense, as he had a better training camp offensively than Beleskey.
If we need a Bottom Sixer, I’d give it to Beleskey or Sharp. I don’t know about McMillan, unless you meant MacMillan. Not really sure what the front office wants to do with Logan.

I’d like to say that my thoughts instantly went to Big Sexy, but we will need a bottom 6 guy and that’s probably gotta be Sharp. He’s dangerous. You can’t teach Arty’s size, but I think Sharp has just as much of a physical game. The question is, will he be less stupid about it?

The Carter news from tonight’s Q&A was that he had a previous injury that flared up after taking a puck off the skate.
He was wearing a boot tonight.
Also…Big Sexy? Thats what my roommate calls Lupul. Who are you referring to?

So as to relieve the suspense, and because I don’t know when next Daniel will sign on, Big Sexy is an ironic nickname I came up with for Dan Sexton. Ironic because he’s a little guy.

Okay…I just thought maybe you were in on the Twitter madness in which the Big Sexy name has spread, but for Lupul.
what a ka-wink-a-dink! :)

As a heterosexual man, I try not to call another man Big Sexy unless he actually has “Sex” in his name i.e. 6’8" Richie Sexson. But as a Ducks fan, how does a guy 6’1" earn the name Big Sexy?

Well, we kinda give nicknames to everyone. I didn’t not hand out this one in particular.
It was my roommate…first thing she said about him when she saw his picture. It just stuck.
haha, but I understand if you opt not to use it!

I was going to promote to front page, but I plan to have it in the open gameday thread tomorrow morning. Lines in practice were:
Joffrey Lupul-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry
Bobby Ryan-Saku Koivu-Teemu Selanne
Petteri Nokelainen-Todd Marchant-Matt Beleskey
Mike Brown-George Parros-Erik Christensen-Evgeny Artyukhin

Yeah it’s probably a good decision by the league. Meh.
Lol, just kidding. This post was a complete lie.

Oh, I forgot to say I liked the new avatar. You put it up on our board before, and my immediate response was “I DO like crabby patties”

As a Stars fan
I was miffed that a penalty wasn’t called. I’m a little surprised by the length of the suspension.
If I was in Colin Campbell’s shoes, I might have opted for a one gamer or a fine. Obviously, he didn’t intend to give Niskanen a concussion. But when a concussion results from an illegal hit, you’ve got to hand something down.
BTW, welcome to the SBN family Arthur and Daniel.
I trust Earl has chosen wisely. :o)

Thanks for the welcome!
I think it was a tough call for the ref. The initial contact was made upstairs and they went into the boards with Niskanen’s left leg up while still trying to stay on his right skate. I think a lot of refs would have missed this at game speed, because on a slew foot, you usually bring a guy over your leg in one clean motion. This didn’t look like that until you slowed it down.
Suspension is what I expected since he’s a repeat offender and they can apply the CBA rules to him to really make him feel each missed game.

Makes you wonder if he happens to do it again, will he then be categorized as a repeat offender and suspended or not.
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality? (boycott Hollywood!)

He’s had some dirty knee-on-knee hits (as has Artyukhin), but R2 took a guy’s helmet off and hit him with it. After that, a parking ticket comes off as a repeat offense.

Yeah, I saw that clip. He’s a crazy ass Russian, with a mean streak. I dont think he’s been in a fight for anaheim yet. I dont think anaheim likes winning fights. But atleast Parros doesnt wear a visor.

He’s fought for us, keeping his helmet on, but I think his toughness value comes in his willingness to take shots at opposing superstars. That’s something we sorely missed in the years we didn’t have Grimson and Kariya was taking a concussion a year.

I think it is sad watching Mike Brown try to fight. He is always vastly outsized and has no chance t hit anyone. Poor little guy,

As long as he uses it as a tool to back up his hits, he shouldn’t have to fight too often— just every time he knocks a guy to the ice so hard, he guy cuts himself on his own visor. heh heh
