***Ducks Set To Re-assign Sbisa***
THE TELETYPE:
The OC Register reports today that the Ducks intend to re-assign defenseman Luca Sbisa tomorrow. The young defenseman will have to return to his juniors team in Lethbridge, where he was recently overplayed to the tune of 35-40 minutes per game.
A re-assignment, as opposed to a trade, seems at odds with statements made by Ducks GM Bob Murray in the offseason, indicating that he would move Sbisa if he could not find a spot for him in Anaheim.

I liked the kid, but I’m all for it.
He started the season out pretty strong, but it’s not like he was a difference maker. Can you be a difference maker with so little experience?
Maybe this was their plan all along. Give him a little taste of the NHL so that he wants to come back and stay here next season.

Well, he has to come back next season; his contract runs until then.
I think it’s strange for management to be so high on him, and then send him to the Juniors. His lack of experience doesn’t really hurt us right now, but I’d wager that less than half of this blueline corps is returning next year. His lack of experience will definitely hurt us if we stick him in the lineup then.

I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that they must not plan on playing him often enough. I know Murray said that if he was going to be sitting on the bench, they weren’t going to keep him here. Makes sense to me to let him continue playing – even if that is somewhere else.
Does this mean a longer stay for Mikkelson? It doesn’t seem like they’re planning on returning him any time soon.

Murray was implying a trade to another team rather than locking him out of the NHL for the season, which is what this essentially does. Lethbridge is a good team, but he’s ready to leave the juniors and they did overplay him after the Flyers sent him back down. I can’t imagine that repeating that experience would be any kind of step forward in his development, which is what I think Murray was alluding to as the thing he would absolutely not do.
Yeah, I don’t think they’ll move Mikkelson either; they wouldn’t have dropped Ebbett otherwise. But I think that this mostly means we see more Boynton. He’s been clamoring for playing time, and he’s apparently too old to stay sharp if he’s not playing regularly. Mikk, Boynton and Brookbank will probably continue duking it out for that bottom pair.

Really? I didn’t think there would be enough value for him at this point in his “career”

He probably couldn’t get anything more than another first round pick, but GP is an important stat. And more and more kids are playing in the “New” NHL without developing that “brought along too fast” stigma. Though, for the record, I think that’s true of Christensen and Eminger.

Eminger was definitely brought along too fast, and the Caps learned their lesson from it. After Eminger the Caps have completely re-thought their approach to D. Mike Green, Jeff Schultz, Karl Alzner, and now John Carlson have all spent a year in Hershey before getting a permanent spot on the big club. And Green and Schultz spent that year in Hershey when the Caps were still terrible; skill-wise they may have been able to crack the roster but GMGM didn’t want to risk it so he’s moving them slowly. Alzner is almost certainly NHL ready but the salary cap and abundance of caution are keeping him in the AHL.

Lethbridge was a good team, last year. The balance of power swings quite quickly in junior hockey because of the limited age window that players have. This year, Lethbridge is near the bottom of the barrel and I suspect that the reason why the Ducks haven’t specifically stated where Sbisa is going is because Lethbridge is trying to swing a deal to send him out of town in return for further assets for their rebuilding effort.
The Hurricanes have already gone through this before this year, dealing Chicago prospect Kyle Beach almost as soon as he was sent back to the WHL by the Blackhawks.

I still don’t understand why Murray seemed so sure he could keep this kid in the NHL.

I think that was kinda my reaction too. It just seemed there were better options from the get go.

Really?
The same options that Murray had now were the ones present at training camp: either juniors or NHL.
Either way, a year of his contract was going to be burned.
The only difference is that by him not being on the active roster for 40 games, he does not have another year of experience towards Unrestricted Free Agency. Provided he plays next season, he’ll be a UFA at age 26. If he played all of this year, he would have been a free agent at age 25.

I think the better play for the Ducks is to have him in the lineup this year. It’s conceivable that only Whitney and Eminger will return next year. Even if we re-stock through free agency, it would be nice to have an affordable guy with a whole year of Ducks hockey under his belt.

I know I’m late on analysis, but this move just doesn’t make sense to me. The blueline corps is in tatters. Sbisa was supposed to be a prospect for the future. Trial by fire may not have been the preferred method, but at least he would have been seasoned for next year. This team is supposed to succeed, and I’m not sure we have enough pieces to move for quality help. I think Murray might think of doing something drastic if the tide doesn’t turn in the next 5-10 games.
