***Per Capgeek, Ducks Sign Kyle Calder***
THE TELETYPE:
HF Boards user "sureloss" has cited the Capgeek page for Kyle Calder as confirmation that the Ducks have signed the 30 year-old forward to a one-year two-way contract at 500K (105K AHL). No official confirmation has been made at this time. Calder had signed a pro tryout contract this past offseason, but was released by Anaheim at the end of September.
UPDATE 10-28: The Ducks confirmed this afternoon that they signed Calder and assigned him to Bakersfield of the ECHL.

More attempt at scotch taping this team? Ah man.
The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!
Meh. Beleskey took a bad hooking call last game, Marchant might be out, Artyukhin’s still got some suspension to serve and Carter’s foot hasn’t healed yet. There’s definitely a hole for him in the Bottom 6. It’d be nice if we could trust someone from the cupboard, but the front office puts too much faith in the GP stat.

The guy has scored 20 goals before. We need something to happen. If this means some guys get a little uncomfortable and play a little harder, I’m for it. He showed flashes of forechecking ability in the preseason. Let’s face it, we need to toughen up somehow. If Calder can man-up on the forecheck, he’ll turn into a great addition.
Unfortunately, I don’t have very high hopes for Calder. I’m not even sure if he will be able to gain a spot on our 23 man active roster. I foresee him and Beleskey fighting for the spot that has now been vacated by Sbisa.
I don’t think Beleskey will stay when Carter returns and Artyukhin come back.

Hah, I laughed out loud when I saw this. It’s nice that he’s dirt cheap and all, but he’s really not that useful. One of the really crippling things for the Ducks is that the top 6 has not been producing, which the team really depends on. Kyle Calder is not going to fix either of those two lines. Neither is Calder going to fix anything with the defensive pairings either. He’s just another interchangable and unremarkable part to go on a 3rd or 4th line somewhere. Good to have the depth I guess, but having any sort of expectation for him of any kind is probably a bit of wishful thinking.

I don’t honestly think they brought him on to fix any problems. Maybe they’re expecting more Artyukhin suspensions or another possible injury and would rather have an expereienced call up vs. a rookie type.
If they can’t find a way to fix this group within, they’re going to be looking at major changes…nothing a Calder signing could help with.

More depth in the bottom 6 gives Carlyle the ability to use the healthy scratch as a coaching tool. They wanted to scratch Artyukhin for the Dallas game where he took his suspension, but they couldn’t because of an injury to Carter. Calder is a scab worker that lets the coaching staff bench anyone in the Bottom 6 not giving their all. That’s very valuable this time of year. If I’m Artyukhin, what do I care if I get benched for Beleskey? They’ll have to put me back in some time; they can’t keep the kid in there forever. But if they bench me for another NHLer, I can’t take the chance.
