Open Gameday Thread Canucks @ Ducks
Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks, Oct 30, 2009 7:00 PM PDT
Start: 7PM TV: NONE Radio: AM830 Your Enemy: Nucks Misconduct
ARTHUR:
Daniel and I will be at the game tonight, but I'll try to mobile comment to keep the discussion moving.
The Ducks have been trying to right the ship since the beginning of this homestand, and it seems to have slipped off course even more. There have been various cliched quotes over the three day break. Whitney noted the need to "buy in to the system"; Marchant pointed to the attempts to "do too much." I could use a similar cliche here, maybe even say something substantive, but I'll leave the question for you to predict before game time. What SPECIFICALLY do the Ducks need to do tonight to win this game?

“do the opposite of what they have been doing” probably isn’t specific enough. I’m at a loss.
But this…
-I’m glad your brother’s injured. He’s hideous looking.
HILARIOUS!

I’d take opposite, so long as they understand it’s not EXACT opposite. We have been doing one or two things well.

Well, statistically, you can look at things like 100 OS%, meaning we’re the only team in the NHL that has never lost a game when we outshoot our opponent (compare that to the frustration of last season where we finished 24th with .425 i.e. far less than half the times we outshot an opponent were we guaranteed a win).
There are intangibles like zone entry and scoring chances, but those are all generally related to depth. But if you asked me for the one thing I’d like to see continue . . . Lupul the passer. It’s like Twilight Zone hockey.

I had noticed that crazy SOG thing last season too. At the beginning, it was kind of an obvious indicator who was going to win the game. Ironic.
It’s like Twilight Zone hockey.
haha! I’ve been saying this same thing so far this season. But more in relation to the current standings.

I hate to use a basketball phrase here, but the Ducks need to take their man on D. There are just too many goals happening where some one is receiving a pass without anyone tying up the stick or taking the body. Keep it simple on D and let the creativity of the guys on offense take over.

Really? I’m seeing a lot of the opposite, where we’re not pestering the playmaker with the puck. It’s hard to stop someone from jumping into a hole without being called for interference, but we should be able to make passes more difficult and raise the discomfort level on playmakers. For that, I want to see Mikkelson more confident in his physical game.

Tv coverage
Anyone know if the NHL CI feed will be blacked out in SoCal, even though there is no local coverage tonight? I’m worried the answer is yes. :(

I can’t find a schedule that says the opposition feed won’t be blacked out, and when the Ducks lifted the blackout for St. Louis, they announced it. So all indicators indicate a blackout.

I’ll disagree, out of principle. Center Ice has been very reliable the last couple of years — I’m trusting I’ll be able to see it (much later, on DVR).

Okay. All indicators except for Sleek’s testimonial say blackout.

Checked it really quick before heading out — blackout seems lifted.

Oh, we got this in the inbox this morning. If anyone has time before the game...
REF YOU SUCK TO STAGE ANTI-REFEREE RALLY BEFORE ANAHIEM DUCKS/VANCOUVER
CANUCKS GAME TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE HONDA CENTER – ANAHEIM, CA 10/30/09
Costa Mesa, CA- Disgruntled Anaheim Ducks fans have aligned with anti-referee apparel company Ref You Suck to stage an anti-referee rally in front of the arena. After the loss on Monday night to the Toronto Maple Leafs, numerous fans contacted Ref You Suck to voice their frustration with the calls that night.
Ducks fans feel the NHL officials were partial to the Maple Leafs, who were win-less heading into the game on Monday night. The refs made multiple phantom calls leaving the Ducks on numerous shorthanded situations leading to five power play goals by the Maple Leafs.
“This Ref You Suck Rally is not anti-Vancouver or anti-NHL. We just want to support the Anaheim Duck fans who are upset with the one way officiating from the referees on Monday night. You would think the negative stories about professional referees these days would have these guys on their toes. This rally gives the fans a way to demonstrate the way they feel.” states Brian Gilmore, founder of RefYouSuck.com.
Support for the Ref You Suck Rally has been generated through Twitter, MySpace and Facebook posts. All interested in participating should email rally@refyousuck.com for information.

Yeah, whatever. Refs didn’t lose last game, the Ducks did.

My sentiments exactly. An ump can set up a ridiculous strike zone, but you have only yourself to blame if you’re stubbornly walking in runs.

Nothing game related here but I just noticed that 3 Kings vs. Ducks games aren’t televised this year, along with the Ducks Oilers game on Valentines day…..now how in the hell am I supposed to make my hockey crazed girlfriend happy on Valentines day if the Ducks aren’t on?
Ridiculous.
On a side note, I’ll be at the game with her in 406 tonight and I don’t know if anyone here reads up on Hockeybuzz.com but the guys latest rumor has the Ducks moving the captain before the deadline even if we are still in contention and apparently Scotty’s given the go-ahead if it’s to Philly, Boston, or New Jersey.
I’d hate to see Scotty go but I sure wouldn’t mind having Toronto’s 1st rounder this year.

Yeah, I read that. We’d be awesome sellers at the deadline. I don’t know if Boston would give up that first rounder so easily; they could use Hall in the cupboard. On Eklund’s more logical prediction, I like the idea of moving Giguere to Detroit at the deadline, but I don’t know if he’d say yes to that trade.

I’m not sure what we could end up getting for Jiggy, but I do agree that we are going to be bigtime sellers. Everyone seems to think that our system is weak but, if you look at our weaknesses in Anaheim, we have guys who should be ready in 1-2 years in Gardinier, Mitera, Bonino, and don’t forget about our dearly departed Luca Sbisa. Take it to account how many other good defenseman we have in the AHL, ECHL and NCAA we should be set on the blueline for awhile.
I personally think Nic DeSchamps is a stud, while watching Peter Holland play in the preseason was absolutely horrifying, even more so after seeing what Ryan O’Reilly is doing for the Avalanche.
We should be set with Getz, Perry, Lups, and Ryan if we resign him, but we arent too deep up front after Bonino, Deschamps, Palmieri, and Holland

For Jiggy, if we trade with Detroit, I think we could at least get Helm and picks on a salary dump, or someone more like Franzen on a legit trade (we’d probably have to throw in a pick there.
Unfortunately a lot of our prospects are on the blueline. They’re great prospects, but one of them will probably have to go in a trade for a defenseman or a scoring prospect if we sign D through free agency.
We definitely need more pure scorers/playmakers. I sincerely hope Deschamps gets a full shot before Lupul, Getz and Perry’s contracts expire. I don’t know if Holland will adjust to this system, but the system could change and we can always ship him somewhere where he would excel (plenty of places for that).

4th line scoring key in the last win; it’s key tonight

Damn you Ducks! Damn you!
Picking on our backup goalies like that. Shelling them. Killing their confidence in themselves!
Well, the Quacks needed this now, didn’t they?

Haha lupul’s goal off the boards was overkill, but you guys almost had us scoring so quickly.
