***NHL Reinstates Samueli***

THE TELETYPE:

Today the NHL reinstated Ducks owner Henry Samueli, lifting a suspension imposed in June of last year.  Samueli was suspended while he faced charges related to the manipulation of stock options for Broadcom, an IC manufacturer that he co-founded with Henry Nicholas.  The Ducks owner had reached a plea bargain with prosecutors in September of last year, but the lower court refused to accept it.  The parties subsequently brought the matter to the Ninth Circuit Appellate Courts.  Samueli's wife and co-owner, Susan, was not suspended by the NHL but assumed the suspension voluntarily.

The Register’s Eric Stephens spoke with Bob Murray, who said Carlyle isn’t going anywhere and that plenty of players will be shipped off before he fires Carlyle, but that those players are apparently NOT Giguere or Niedermayer.

Hrm. David McNab should brace himself for a promotion jumps up and down signing Sweet Sue

I keep forgetting about SBN’s asterisk policy. To clarify, I would jump up and down and sing Sweet Sue if McNab were our GM. Then we would be competing with San Jose for the title of Team That Drafts The Most WCHA Players In The Late Rounds. You can laugh, but Pavelski looks like he’s working out fine, and Lucia and Barriball won’t be slouches either.

What, if any, effect will this have on the team/budget? Is this just an official in-name-only thing?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Samueli gave Burke the green light when he overspent the budget in ’07-08, but the economy is different now and attendance is down again.

Though it is worth noting that the budget was calculated based on last year’s revenues, which were apparently positive thanks to the playoff run. If a playoff run is the only way to get in the black, I don’t see why Samueli wouldn’t approve some extra spending now, so long as there’s a fire sale in March if we’re out of the hunt.
