***Ducks Reassign Their San Antonio Prospects***

THE TELETYPE:

J.P. Hoornstra is reporting that Anaheim prospects Matt Beleskey, Troy Bodie and Brett Festerling have been reassigned to the AHL's Toronto Marlies, while their San Antonio teammate Ryan Donally has been reassigned to Bakersfield.

Without an AHL affiliate this season, the Ducks have moved their brace of prospects across the minor leagues and previously placed Brennan Evans and Brendan Mikkelson in Toronto, though the latter has since been called up to the NHL roster.  Donally is the third Duck to move from San Antonio to the team's ECHL affiliate, after Dan Sexton and more recently Mark Mitera.

This is really a wise move. Phoenix sent too many of last year’s rookies back to the AHL. Next season might see the exodus of Koivu, Selanne, Niedermayer, Wisniewski, Hiller, and likely Boynton and Brookbank (maybe even Ryan and Mikkelson). If these guys don’t see regular playing time somewhere, the Ducks may start an ECHL squad next year . . . or damage their finances for the next five years by restocking through free agency. Sigh.

So WTF happened to the Iowa Chops anyway?

It says on their site that their franchise was involuntarily suspended for the 2009-10 season by the league’s Board of Governors.

"The Iowa franchise has unfortunately been unable to remedy certain violations of the provisions of the league’s Constitution and By-Laws," said American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews.

What the hell did they do/not do?

I was saying boo-urns.

From what I understand, the owners lost a lot of money, tried to get more money by putting the team up as collateral and then the whole thing blew up in their face.

It was a small loan, less than 2M I think, but even with it, they couldn’t pay the Ducks. They offered Anaheim a payment schedule to cover it, which Anaheim declined. All that before the team was formally suspended
