Open Gameday Thread Lightning @ Ducks

Tampa Bay Lightning at Anaheim Ducks, Nov 19, 2009 7:00 PM PST

Start: 7:00PM             TV:  PRIME TICKET          Radio: AM830

Your Enemy:  Raw Charge

ARTHUR:

Sleek has the skinny on the unlikely win/loss record the Ducks would need to salvage the last 63 games of the season.  Two teams have done it, and both posted losses in the teens.  Anaheim is currently on pace to post wins in the teens for its remaining 63.

Koivu and Carter joined the IR crowd, while MacGregor Sharp joined teammate Kyle Calder in the Anaheim locker room.  Sharp is a center, and should be taking over fourth line center duties with Christensen loaned to Manitoba.  Tinkering with Wednesday's line rushes from The OC Register, I think you can expect to see the following combos:

Bobby Ryan-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry

Evgeny Artyukhin-Petteri Nokelainen-Teemu Selanne

Kyle Calder-Todd Marchant-Joffrey Lupul

Mike Brown-MacGregor Sharp-George Parros

Man our lines suck. I can only hope this means we’ll get better on defense.

The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

hahahahahahaha, that’s funny.

Well, the sexy lines that opened the season weren’t getting it done either. At this point, I expect to hear:

“Starting tonight for your Anaheim Ducks!! Blade!!! Lazer!!! Blazer!!! Mi-Chel!!! And Fran, the deadliest woman in the world with a dodgeball!!! And in goal, Jean-Sebastien Giguere!!!”

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions

What a stupid penalty by Boynton. There was still a man back; you can’t take that penalty.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:16 PM PST reply actions

Wisniewski made a poor decision shooting that puck. That’s a surprise.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:17 PM PST reply actions

Nice goal by Teemu.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 7:19 PM PST reply actions

better pass by Getzie. Sharp looks descent so far too.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

Did everyone just see Teemu finish his check?! Wow!!!

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:23 PM PST reply actions

Fedorukis still in the league? Hasn’t he broken his face enough?

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 7:27 PM PST reply actions

at least one more time.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

Ya, I liked him back when he was with the Ducks. However he seems to lost all fighting ability over the last few years.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

I was just a surprised when Calder messed up the pass from the half boards. These guys kill me.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

Kyle Calder – worst pass I’ve ever seen

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:36 PM PST reply actions

gotta give a little. that’s the glory of love

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:38 PM PST reply actions

What’s that From?!!! It’s gonna bug me.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

the song title is in the comment… it’s from the glory of love… don’t know how else to help you…

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

I just can’t remember where I’ve heard the song before. Wait. I remembered. It’s from the movie Beaches. My mom and sister used to watch that shit all the time.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

I like how songs that are fifty or more years old, you interpret as being “from” the first place YOU heard them. As though I could go to the opera and be like, “Oh, Nozze de Figaro. That’s from Rabbit of Seville. That portion of Mozart’s career where he wrote for Looney Tunes.”

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

Because when I first heard them is what makes me think of them. I’m aware the song is older, but what I can’t remember is where I first heard it, and not knowing that is what drives me crazy.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, really a personal thing that you shouldn’t involve other people in, like when This Magic Moment came on and you thanked Sandlot. Not everyone has those two things fused between neurons like you do.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

That was a fast PP goal.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 7:39 PM PST reply actions

If they’re gonna give us the pass across the crease all night, every PP will be short.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

We have a two nothing lead at the end of the first? Thats got to be a first in a long time.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 7:42 PM PST reply actions

definitely this season.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

Am I the only person anxiously awaiting what kind of black magic the Hawks used to sign these guys?

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 7:49 PM PST reply actions

No magic, Keith just agreed to a deal that stretches into his retirement. They were lucky that he’s 26 and could sign a lifetime. Only problem is, they have to ship a guy off to get everything tagged for next year.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

Hossa’s skating, so i predict Versteeg leaves town for a second rounder

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

i don’t know how you move byfuglien. Wild take him as a homer deal? I think they move versteeg, the one guy they know they can, to get under the tagging rules, and then try to keep everyone else until the deadline.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t trade with them, but that’s just me. I hate them for crushing my Duncan Keith dream. Where are we going to get a top defenseman to replace Scotty?

Also, awesome hit by R2.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

Konopka? Seems like ages ago, when he was on the Ducks.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

always thought we should’ve given konopka more of a chance

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:04 PM PST reply actions

I think it worked out. He’s not just a fighter, but grinders can be replaced a little more easily…unless your GM is Bob Murray.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t really have much of a memory of what kind of player he was back when he was with us. The only think that I really remember about him, when he was a Duck was that he got into a fight during a game I saw.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

He had some monster seasons in the AHL. I think in Cinci, he was second in scoring, between our two first round draft picks at the time. And some of that translated. I remember him having a fistful of goals in the quarter of a season we gave him. Lumbering skater, but a really thick body.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions

we need to buy out boynton. So i can save money on hypertension medication

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:06 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, Mikkelson has been good and giving another prospect a chance on D would be good since all of our guys are marginal at best. Not counting NIeds of course.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

Look at Bobby trying to earn his 4.5 next year. Scoring with a cut eye and everything.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:10 PM PST reply actions

haha, he’ll be asking for 6.75 I think. Hopefully the you can’t make more than getzlaf argument we used on perry still works. Add in a bad economy and maybe we can downplay his numbers this season.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

Whitney thought he was back in the Eastern conference and decided to let a guy go to the net without taking the body.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions

I have the sudden urge to cry.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions

because you had the life urge to be a ducks fan. c’est la vie de les fanatiques de les canards mechants.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

mechant? Doesn’t that mean villain or evil?

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

it’s what the Montreal TV crew called us during our inaugural season, the vicious ducks I guess you could say was what they were going for, because the duck goalie mask was snarling.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

I see. Wasn’t quite sure though, as my French is a bit rusty.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

It’s a bit of ducks history. Didn’t really stick, but for that first season, the french speaking hockey world did refer to us as such.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

what are you going to do about that Stamkos play? I mean. yeah Boynton should have swatted with his hand and not his stick, but that’s just a bad bounce. We were playing great. This is a good chance to show we can overcome these things.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

I know, but things like that cane be real momentum killers, but lucky it looks like the Ducks aren’t phased.

by yankeeken on Nov 19, 2009 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

2 true. We rallied back pretty well. I’d still love an insurance goal though.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

James Wisniewski will not return on a bruised foot? The hell you say! Wait, that’s actually kind of surprising that he’s not trying to limp around and hurt the team

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:15 PM PST reply actions

I still can’t get over that we can’t pay Beauchy the extra 1.05 million.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

As Murray said, he would rather waste money on Wisniewski and sign players like Boynton then insult Beauchemin. Just so you know, Daniel. If it’s between insulting you and the Ducks being successful . . . you’re getting insulted than a motherf*******r

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

I’d expect nothing less. That’s how we roll!!

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

smith was so deep in net, he lifted it off the moorings with his helmet

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:17 PM PST reply actions

Bobby Ryan has drawn 3 calls in this period. It’s like he knew he needed to step it up to get paid this off season.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:26 PM PST reply actions

it won’t last. he laid some rough checks last year, and is starting to throw them ‘bows. He’ll be a Big Bad Duck in their eyes soon enough. Koivu, on the other hand, should fake a seizure once in a while

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

how is a team this interference-happy 8th in the east?

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:26 PM PST reply actions

Nittymaki has been on fire. Don’t know why he’s getting 2 days off in a row, but I"m grateful.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

it’s an official tandem in tampa. no number one tocchet says

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Nittymaki just played like 5 in row or something like that. tandem might be lip service.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

well, it was declared at the beginning of this month. He probably wants them to fight it out like Carlyle is doing.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe, a “win and play” philosophy would explain why Tampa’s resurgence would coincide with all of Antero’s starts.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:31 PM PST up reply actions

why does ahlers talk about st. louis in his best porn voice there?

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:31 PM PST reply actions

I think Ahlers wants to jump him.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

Damn, I’ve seen Noks unload some wicked shots.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:31 PM PST reply actions

Brookbank needs to teach Whitney how to play in front of the net. Not how to play along the boards, but definitely in front of the net. And by in front of the net, I just mean how to flatten a guy in the crease.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:33 PM PST reply actions

So who has been great and who has been flopping so far in this game?

The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

by Slyintine on Nov 19, 2009 8:34 PM PST reply actions

I don’t even know anymore.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

I think it’s great that Wisniewski finally admitted he was injured on a play instead of hobbling his tired fragile body around the ice for 25 minutes. Power Play’s been great as well. I’ve only been tempted to throw the remote at the Boynton and Calder, really.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Calder hadn’t been nearly as bad as Boynton. Where the hell is Eminger. Why does Carlyle insist on benching the wrong people.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

he probably has the flu or something. brookbank took a penalty last game. Eminger’s Carlyle’s boy. Not sure whose boy Brookbank is. Played for us before Paterson was our pro coach, I think. Maybe he’s McNab’s boy

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

Brookbank took a bad penalty, but overall I think he’s had a better game than Boynton.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:49 PM PST up reply actions

for a guy who doesn’t play and knows he’d have to be waived to go to the minors, brookbank’s really professional about it. he didn’t say anything sitting all of last game. And he still tries to mix it up when he’s in there without drawing too much attention to himself. Dude is basically hanging out with the team like the boy in Almost Famous, and he still shows up to play when he’s called. Reading what I typed, I now HOPE he’s McNab’s boy

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

that man is so ugly. thank god this is a helmet league. Why didn’t Nick Van Exel grow up playing hockey. yeesh.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:40 PM PST reply actions

he looks like the banjo-toting boy from Deliverance

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t like the fact that we’re starting the 3rd quarter on the PK.

The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

by Slyintine on Nov 19, 2009 8:50 PM PST reply actions

sort of a necessary penalty, though not a good penalty. guess the silver lining is it’s a winnable game for once

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

I’m just hoping for the best. So far it hasn’t been great. But it’s been a much better effort.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

There’s the injury announcement on Eminger.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:54 PM PST reply actions

that’s where whitney’s east coast experience comes in handy. He expects that crazy spinning shot stuff

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:55 PM PST reply actions

bout time it came in handy for something.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

Argh

The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

by Slyintine on Nov 19, 2009 8:56 PM PST reply actions

Pete Peeters should be fired tonight. And Hiller should be signed for peanuts. thats’ all he’s been playing for

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 8:56 PM PST reply actions

yeah, goaltending was supposed to be the strongest part of our team. Don’t know what happened.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

Bad goaltending coach?

The Big Red Machine V.2 is coming this Fall 2009. Go Halos!

by Slyintine on Nov 19, 2009 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

he’s said he’s not going to try and interfere with them too much since they’re both fully developed under Allaire. But they’re both struggling and he needs to be saying SOMETHING. He can’t just hang out withi Piel and Pogge in Bakersfield.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

classic sports axiom. if you have two quarterbacks, then you really have none.

We should definitely take advantage of it though. We won’t need either guy for the playoffs and we have money next year. Sign HIller to a two year 2.5 mil a year or something and carry both of them next year.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

Will Hiller agree, or will someone overpay for him?

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

if we sign him tonight on teh strength of him suffering? and carry around 8M+ between the pipes next year? He SHOULD agree based on the way he’s playing. We have to sign him before he improves.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

It won’t last much longer. Murray is going to do something soon just to be dramatic.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

maybe, but this is a great opportunity with this season pretty much tanked and neither playing very well. It’s much harder to move giguere, so why not carry them. it’ll be MUCH easier to move jiggy at any point during next season. And hiller can’t ask for too much after this nonsense. Murray doesn’t have teh good sense, but it’s an opportunity

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

Woah that was close

R2 takes untimely penalty. Pretty regular these days. Call up Big Sexy!!!!

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:08 PM PST reply actions

liked brookbank’s fire there. Pulled of a helmet like he was marking a tree. “You’re mine, and I”ll be back to fight you later"

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

I like the way he’s playing. He looked nervous on the wing, but on the blue line he looks ready to play his game. Certainly playing better than Boynton.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:10 PM PST up reply actions

he fronted a guy on teh doorstep just now. probably the only defenseman really taking the “no turnover” system to heart

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

Brokbank made a great play in front of the net. Just swatted the puck into the corner.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:12 PM PST reply actions

I saw the puck on the near wing, after artyukhin sent it to selanne and around. And I was like, “just wait, artyukhin skates cross ice” sure enough he does.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:14 PM PST reply actions

i think boynton’s like an old tv or radio; he needs to warm up

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:15 PM PST reply actions

He’s had some good blocks of some almost dangerous passes. I just like Brookbank’s overall game more tonight. Although Boynton isn’t making as many stupid plays to be sure.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

Well, Brookbank’s making careful plays since the tie. Boynton’s threading the needle on some tougher plays that the Boynton of the first 2 period couldn’t even attempt

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

All these terrible penalties.

I was clearly saying too many good things about Brookbank. Thank Jesus for Scott Niedermayers.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:24 PM PST reply actions

brookbank actually finished off the play well by going to the crease and pretending it was covered

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

he was being a little too careful in teh neutral zone, telegraphing passes on a fast team

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

yes Niedermayers. I think there are 2 of him out there.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not a fan of them saying we can’t win this game in OT and should go for the shootout. That’s where we are? We need to earn points via carnival games?

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

They were talking about the Lightning forcing us to a shoot out I think

We needed this one so badly.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:31 PM PST reply actions

technically we needed the last four so badly. This one is more of a tourniquet that lets us say goodbye to our family before we shuffle off this mortal coil

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

your positivity is inspiring.

by Daniel AC on Nov 19, 2009 9:33 PM PST up reply actions

it’s good to see a win, but we needed it because we were giving it away and it would’ve been crushing, not because 17 pts is so much different from 15 pts right now.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 19, 2009 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

would you prefer i said, “Woo-hoo! 14th in the West!!! Look out San Jose!!!!”

so this means Earl will be in a good mood??

maybe. Earl broke down the likelihood we’ll make the playoffs and he drinks a lot. hard to say. There’s a cartoon event of some kind that’s numbing the pain alreay
