Around SBN: Identifying The 19th-Best Team In Baseball

Downed D-Men

DANIEL:

The OC Register is reporting that Steve Eminger and James Wisniewski have suffered injuries.  Eminger went down with back spasms, a very unpredictable injury.  Wiz suffered a bruised foot that took him out in the first period of last night's game.  X-rays were negative, but Ryan Carter has now missed 5 games with a similar condition.  Even though the extent of Wisniewski's injury still isn't known, the Ducks only have 5 defenseman left on the roster if he's not ready to go on Saturday night. So we're putting together this poll to see who the fans think the Ducks should bring up to round out the defensive corp.

Poll
Who will the Ducks call up to replace the injured Wisniewski?
Mark Mitera
6 votes
Brett Festerling
21 votes
Stu Bickel

Brian Salcido

I hate HATE that they’ll go with Festerling here. So much so that I did not vote. He’s the most trustworthy with NHL minutes on the list, though he has the most limited skill set and can be worn down into turnovers.

We can ask Mikkelson to wrist some shots on net and probably step up the nastiness with Brookbank. But as far as comfortably giving a guy minutes, I only see them handing it to someone who’s done it before. All of these guys had a bad camp, so this poll is sad.

I voted, because I posted it. My choice was Mark Mitera. The guy has size and his style, according to the reports I read and what I remember from camp, is more of that stay at home play that we’ve been missing. Mitera has the size to be a force in the NHL. My second choice would be Bickel though. He didn’t get a lot of minutes in camp, but he had a few solid hits and a good shot. I admit that the poll is a little sad, but I really don’t know who else we have. I guess McIver.

by Daniel AC on Nov 20, 2009 10:24 AM PST up reply actions

No, we don’t have McIver. There are other guys in the pipe, but these were the camp guys. It’s sad because they pretty much all had a bad camp.

Really? I don’t know… I have always liked Festerling better than Mikkelson.

by yankeeken on Nov 20, 2009 4:32 PM PST up reply actions

well, mikkelson’s never been as careful with the puck maybe, but he’s got skating and shooting as upsides. Festerling doesn’t really bring anything dynamic to the table, and I feel like the Ducks need contributions from every player right now.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, but I do feel like Mikkelson has HUGE consistency issues. Dr. Mikkel and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Mikkel is confident and frikkin awesome. Mr. Hyde never plays his man properly and cannot move the puck in his own zone.

I believe Salcido would be able to be called up under emergency conditions and thus skip going through waivers, but I’m not sure what the conditions are (how long he can stay and all that)

Now, why is that Kevin? It was my understanding that since he’s making 62K down there, he can be called up freely, and since he cleared waivers to open the season, he’d only need to clear waivers if he had an extended stay (a month or 10 games)? Shouldn’t the ducks be able to call up a 62K player for a few games then send him down?

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

he’d only need to clear waivers on the way down if he had an extended stay, that is

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking there. The only thing he/the team would need to be wary of is the 10 games/30 days active roster.

I voted for Uncle Festerling.

He’s the only one I already have an image for.

If only we could make all personnel decisions based on that criteria…

Luca Sbisa, what?

I deliver high-quality H2O

by The Waterboy on Nov 20, 2009 12:41 PM PST reply actions

Don’t think Murray wants him up for temporary stints.

Lol, just kidding. This post was a complete lie.

by brokenyard on Nov 20, 2009 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

actually, we can’t get him back this season. You’d never think Murray was a longtime blueliner, the way he manages our assets

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

I know we can’t bring him back up, it was an ironic statement due to the fact that had we not sent him down (permanently) we would not be in this situation. Also, I hate Sheldon Brookbank.

Also Hockeysfuture.com just posted a new article on our Junior prospects and apparently 2009 2nd Round pick Matt Clark is tearing it up.

I deliver high-quality H2O

Arthur and I were both really high on Matt Clark in camp. I thought he had an outside shot at making the team. The kid almost never makes the wrong decision and he uses his big hit capability effectively. I expect him to be a full timer next year.

by Daniel AC on Nov 20, 2009 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t know about full timer. He’ll certainly get a call up. But some attempt to rebuild the blueline through free agency will happen, and I don’t think he can leapfrog Sbisa.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, i got your sarcasm there. I was replying to brokenyard with the statement. SBN’s reply system defaults me to not putting @[user] before replies. Sorry about the confusion.

I like Clark. He’s definitely there physically. He has trouble moving or shooting the puck under pressure, though.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 1:07 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, and I’m seeing impressive flashes from Brookbank. I think he played with a really great team in Cincinnati, and just couldn’t stand out. He must’ve been David McNab’s boy to get such a solid slot with us now. I can’t imagine Alain Chainey still has the pull to single-handedly keep him on this team.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

I hate Sheldon Brookbank, too.

by yankeeken on Nov 20, 2009 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

so much hate for this man. Did he do something in cincinnati that I don’t know about? How long ago did he scorn all of you? Is it just his bad play in front of the net or is there something more?

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

Oh right right the “junior aged” thing

Lol, just kidding. This post was a complete lie.

by brokenyard on Nov 20, 2009 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

All I know is the Brookbank was getting the nod over Boynton, who I have always liked.

Boynton >>>>>>>>> Brookbank

I deliver high-quality H2O

by The Waterboy on Nov 20, 2009 1:45 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, i personally don’t see that many greater-than signs, not anymore. Boynton was good in Boston, but he’s definitely dropped off since. And one could argue that it’s harder for him to get his shot off in the West, but that doesn’t really increase his value to the Ducks.

Of course, he and Eminger were both bad in Florida, but from the way they started this season, I don’t think Eminger has a two-year contract just because he has a better agent or because he’s a friend of Carlyle’s. Boynton didn’t look great, and he came in rusty the few games we started him, and that was before he complained to the media.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 20, 2009 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

You know, I expected Festerling to get a lot of love in this because of the time he spent here last season, but I’m surprised Salcido gets so much love in this poll. I know he’s a local boy, but he’s done nothing to stand out.

by Daniel AC on Nov 20, 2009 3:15 PM PST reply actions

Well, he’s got full ahl seasons. If you don’t like festerling, salcido’s the next most experienced pro. Plus Murray’s high on him, puts him on par with mikk and fest, but Murray could be pandering. And with his eye for talent, that’s really the kiss of death right now.
