***Youngman Reports Preliminary Talks For Giguere To Toronto***

THE TELETYPE:
Per a blog post on The OC Register, Randy Youngman is reporting whispers of preliminary trade talks between the Maple Leafs and Ducks regarding Jean-Sebastien Giguere.  The post (made at 4:10 PST) included a link to Youngman's story, but the link is no longer good. The story was also available in the paper's printed edition.

In the current cached version of the webpage, Youngman specifies that, according to his sources, talks are in the very early stages, but a deal would take place long before the trade deadline.  He speculates that Anaheim would likely have to take Vesa Toskala in return to finalize the trade.  (UPDATE 11-9: the page was apparently unavailable due to a website redesign/upgrade.  You can now find the article here).

Giguere hopes to be available for the Ducks road trip this week and improve his 0-2-1 record and 3.64 GAA. Toskala has underperformed expectations in Toronto since his arrival and is again off to a poor start (0-2-2 with a 5.13 GAA).

it would be nice to not have to pay 6/7 mil. to a back up goalie. we need extra money for Ryan and others.
I hope this trade works out.

We also might be able to free up some money for this year. Could be a prelude to another deal where we add a quality player to the team.

oh boy, that sounds nice. Its probably to good to be true, so I’m not gettin’ my hopes up.

jiggy will probably stay and eat up tons of money.

I don’t know about this trade yet. I know Jiggy’s value has gone way down, but I think someone is going to push the panic button a little closer to the deadline and want a guy like Giguere between the pipes.

Still I enjoy the idea of extra cap space this year, but there goes the Wiz and Jiggy for Duncan Keith deal.

A groin injury is really a no-no in the reliable playoff goaltender department. I know Chicago doesn’t want to lose players just to end up losing a guy the way they lost Khabibulin, only much earlier in the playoffs. I mean, Jiggy described it as the muscle just releasing on him after it nagged at him for a while.

He goes to Toronto and he gets Allaire, who has helped him work with injuries before, and an expectation just to split time equally with Gustavsson and maybe challenge the kid a little. It’s a trade where the strength of his groin is almost a non-issue. I don’t know if we’ll have that option come trade deadline time. We immediately free up 2M to trade Marchant for a guy who is slightly overpaid, or whatever other deals Murray has in the air until he can clear money from this year’s salary budget.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 9, 2009 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

I wasn’t implying HIggins was overpaid there, just that with the extra money we could trade Marchant (our current trade bait) for a guy who is overpaid i.e. the extra money opens up trade options we did not have before or Murray may have been exploring pending a Giguere trade.

it would be awesome if we could get Kaberle instead of Toskala. Unlikely but awesome. Maybe Jiggy and Lupul for Toskala and Kaberle. The money works.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 9, 2009 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t know if Kaberle happens in this deal. I know Burke was shopping him earlier, but he’s been so important for their power play which is tops in the league right now. Obviously, I’d rather see Kaberle and Scotty running the PP than Scotty and Whitney. Although, the Leafs need offense and they might welcome Lupul. How much would that suck for Lupul to finally get back to the place where he always wanted to play and that get sent to Toronto?

by Daniel AC on Nov 9, 2009 3:44 PM PST up reply actions

Well, Kaberle is more in your wheelhouse. I don’t think the Ducks have any intention of signing someone who isn’t a forward. Those are the rumored deals from Murray, and I think that’s what he’s looking for.

Two things that need to happen:

1. Somehow Toronto will have to clear more cap space. Either by sending something more to Anaheim, waiving, sending a player to the minors, another trade, something. Right now, the financials don’t work for a straight up Giguere for Toskala swap.

2. Anaheim will need to show that Giguere is healthy and able to play better than Toskala has. The last time Giguere even won a game was March 24th, let alone putting a few strong games together. No GM trades for a player like Giguere with a contract that large unless they know he’s going to be able to live up to that deal, at least more than he is right now. If Carlyle starts “showcasing” Giguere, perhaps going back to a hot-hand rotation or something of that ilk, than you can pretty much assume there’s trade talks afoot. Right now Hiller is the de facto starter, unless Giguere and Hiller both prove otherwise. Any “undeserved” change in that thinking is a huge indication.

Dont forget about Burkie, Allaire, Buech.. It’s not like Burke doesnt know Jiggy.

True, and Burke has shown allegiance to his former guys like Bertuzzi and Morrison.

That said, I still don’t see Toronto wanting to add a $6 million dollar backup until they know he can play.

I agree that the money is troublesome, but Toronto’s had Jason Blake on the trade block for a while now. They presumably make another move before this trade gets finalized. Murray couldn’t possibly take more salary in the trade (i.e. Blake) as he’d be way over budget and attendance has fallen yet again this year.

But I don’t think the Ducks really have to showcase Giguere. It’s like you said, he has to demonstrate he can play better than Toskala— everyone’s playing better than Toskala. Giguere will get at least one start on the road trip, and that should prove he can split time with Gustavsson. He won’t have to be spectacular or prove he’s healthy enough to get the team to the playoffs— is ANY goaltender healthy enough to get Toronto into the playoffs? I don’t think the problems of a 4M backup versus a 6M backup amount to a hill of beans on a team coming off a struggling start with a goaltender who has fallen so far out of favor.

Giguere is making some .......bold statements

From the LA Daily News:

“Something needs to happen,” Giguere said. “You get a guy like (Hiller) that’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year and myself, making the money I’m making, either I’m leaving or he’s leaving.”

and

“I’d rather retire than be a backup goalie.”

I was saying boo-urns.

Good work from Hoornstra there, but I have to say that it’s a shady move for Jiggy to be talking trade in the media right now. I guess Murray has a deal in place, probably on Hiller’s urging, but he loses a lot of negotiation leverage with his 6M goaltender saying “something needs to happen.”

Also of note, Miller’s on waivers.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Nov 10, 2009 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

woops. meant giguere’s urging, though really it could be either. But a vocal Jiggy makes me think he’s already said this to management.

nana naana nana naana hey hey goodbye.

you dont deserve anything more than a backup position right now buddy. thanks for all you’ve done, but dont let the door hit you on the ass.

Also....

More Giguere goodness. Looks like somebody got a call from his agent.

I was saying boo-urns.

It’s kind of sad to see Jiggy go out like this. I hope this isn’t the end. I’ll always remember 2003 and how amazing he was. I don’t really know what happened to him last year, but he just hasn’t been the same. I’ve seen flashes of that old Giguere, but he just can’t seem to keep it at that level consistently. A trip to Toronto might turn him around and let him end his career on a positive. Maybe he does just need a change of scenery to forget everything. I just wish he could have avoided the media and dragged down his trade value. Still, I think Murray has done a good job getting resources from sometimes invaluable assets. Maybe this can still turn out well for us.

Yeah, I have the same thoughts as well.

After all, He was such an amazing goalie for so long.

Sort of reminds me of my Chargers in terms of L.T

Defense, Im talking to you! You want to kill this Osweiler fella...Come on defense, FOCUS god dammit!

I respect you Juju, you and your gorgeous brilliance
