Open Gameday Recap Thread Oilers @ Ducks

DANIEL:

The Ducks escaped with two points against the Oilers, despite giving up two short-handed goals.  Thank you James Wisniewski and Steve Eminger for making that happen.  Still, James Wisniewski gets a reprieve for doing what he's supposed to do, namely shooting the puck.  His slap shot was deflected in by Todd Marchant in the third period, and that was the game winning tally for the Ducks.  Bobby Ryan had a pair of goals to round out the scoring, and Corey Perry's assist on the first goal kept his point streak alive.

Speaking of streaks, the Ducks have won 11 in a row at the Ponda Center, and the Oilers have lost 11 in a row on the road.  You've gotta like that symmetry.  The Ducks have two more games before the break and winning both could go a long way into deciding what Murray will do at the trade deadline, which occurs almost immediately following the Olympic break.  Murray is going to have to try to pull some clever deals if he expects to keep Anaheim competitive for the rest of the year and in the future.

Wiski and Eminger playing poorly in their own zone? That’s surprising news.

You know, I think it’s a little surprising for Eminger. He’s supposed to be the stay-at-home guy who plays with Whitney. His defensive skills haven’t improved a whole lot, but his ability to play more physical has led to him being harder to play against and therefore more effective in the zone. But he got manhandled by Moreau on that turnover.

As for Wisniewski, he didn’t play poorly in his zone, he played poorly in Edmonton’s zone, which is a different problem. He fanned a cross ice pass to Scotty on the PP and Moreau got a breakaway and scored his first goal in like 30+ games. It was just one of those things…that seems to happen to Wiz a lot.

haha. I like how you submitted to peer pressure in the recap, but then brought the innuendo in the comments. You don’t have to agree with me on this. You’re free to hate him whenever you want. What did the Second City guys call him? A false idol? Feel free to be Moses thumping the first commandment.

I can’t turn a full leaf on Wiz. That would be disingenuous. In a lot of ways he’s just come to represent everything I hate about the team and Bob Murray. Maybe that’s not fair, but it is how I see it. And he’s just crazy. Wiz is CRAZY!!!! It’s like he sits on the blueline some nights and wonders how to get in sportscenter’s top 10 plays.

by Daniel AC on Feb 11, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

I was screaming at him last night, because he really hasn’t decided, even at this point in his career, what to do with loose pucks above the circles. He stares at them, then glides toward them, then he’s surprised when the forward grabs it and skates past him. Skate to it or let it go! Make a decision! Then I thought to myself. Wow, watching games with me must be bad for Daniel’s blood pressure. haha.

No way. My blood pressure is already fucked up. No saving that nonsense, as the tater tots I just had for lunch can account.

how to get in sportscenter’s top 10 plays.

That’s easy, just be a baseball player.

Ohh! You guys!

That’s easy, just be a baseball player Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs.

There, I fixed it for ya.

So it’s just decision making issues and lack of puck control in general. Oh sigh.

My defense of Wisniewski last night is the same as it always is

Ozo. People forget how retarded Ozo was. And only when he started drinking and stopped scoring did that become unbearable, or even noticeable to the average fan. I’m not saying Wiz is in any way Ozo in his best years— I mean, Sandis has like 5 inches and 30 pounds on Wiz, and he could pass the puck and shoot without telegraphing —but offensive defensemen are basically just like that as far as decision making.

And I have to take some of the credit in influencing Daniel’s hate. I call out mistakes like a coach when I watch Ducks games, and since I played defense, defensemen don’t get away with anything. But to Wiz and Ozo’s credit, when I get everything I want in a Sheldon Brookbank, I think it’s absurd. You have to take SOME risks and make SOME NHL plays. You can’t play textbook hockey for 60 minutes and be an impact player at the professional level.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 11, 2010 10:31 AM PST reply actions

I think

the fact that Sheldon Brookbank rarely (if ever) makes a negative impact shouldn’t be discounted. I have never shouted “fucking Brookbank!” at the top of my lungs at a game, only to see all the parents of little kids turn around and scowl at me. There are probably some kindergarteners who now think that “wizniewski” is the second part of a swear word.

It’s just feast or famine with Wiz. I either want to high-five him or stangle him. (sometimes both). If he wants his +/- to stay all nice and shiny, he’ll either figure out how to send a real pass across the ice, or he’ll just have pick up a few more assists.

I was saying boo-urns.

Wiz was having some serious trouble with the puck in December, not just passing but receiving passes, and I think some of that was the shoulder injury not fully healing and maybe the flu. His injury toll to me right now is closer to 12 games plus the suspension. I really don’t know what happened last night. It’s so dangerous for someone that telegraphs their shots and passes to throw out a weak one, but it’s been a problem for him since that shoulder injury. Hard to REALLY get mad about it when Selanne does it virtually every time he has to make a 15 ft. pass, power play or not. Scoring is the ultimate contrition. It’s why we don’t say “swear-word” selanne as often as we should.

With Brookbank, I feel kind of guilty because I really like the guy, but it’s because he shows me what I expect to see. Stay-at-home defensemen see the game as addition or multiplication tables, and he almost always does what I’m about to shout. He’s just out there carrying the 1 most of the time. But the NHL game is closed to multi-variable calculus. People are using their skill to take shortcuts out there, avoid the safe play, and be unpredictable. And when Datsyuk saw Brookbank recently, he UNDRESSED him. It was graphic calculator versus abacus. Don’t get me wrong though, he excels at parts of the game, especially at playing Carlyle’s system and he’s a dream at a reduced salary for a one-way. Plus, you have to love an old Cinci Duck who can play at the same level off the scratch as he can as a regular part of the lineup— that was ultimately Boynton’s undoing. But I just meant to say that if I got exactly what I’m always shouting for a defenseman to do, I STILL wouldn’t be happy, because it would be vanilla hockey. And the whole point of me going to an NHL game is to see Rocky Road.

haha, ‘graphing calculator’ dunno how i typo’d that one.
