Open Gameday Thread Olympics, Feb 18, 2010
ARTHUR:
Hello, all. I wasn't sure if you guys wanted a gameday thread for one of the games today, so here is a thread for the whole day, whatever you're watching, even Psych reruns on your Tivo.
I was inspired by the Finland game yesterday, and with the help of SB Nation user, sleza, I'm putting together a Team Finland shirt for the AC Store. Seems only fair that we try to put something together for Bobby, too, so if you have ideas for what you would want to see out of a Team USA shirt, put them in the comments.

I honestly don't have ideas for a Team USA shirt
but I wasn’t willing to shill the $300 to buy a Bobby Ryan Team USA jersey, and now that he opened scoring for them, I’m scrambling for a cheap alternative. Might as well take advantage of the T-shirt makers we have at our disposal. Suggestions?
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 11:59 AM PST reply actions
$300 for a jearsey?
Ok that is stupid. Really who priced it that high? That is horrible “game planning” for USA hockey. The goal is to get more people into hockey and making a souvenir affordable is a good start. We need to grow the game.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 1:44 PM PST up reply actions
I think it’s a replica jersey at $100, but the twill kit is sewed on, so the name/number kit is $200. If it’s hand sewn in America, that sounds about right. If it’s machine sewn or hand sewn in another country, that’s overcharging.

it must suck if you're from Norway watching this broadcast
and hearing Milbury talk about how the US isn’t shutting them out convincingly enough.

This has been kind of a chippy game.
Lots of late shots, dirty hits, and just general stuff that if this was an NHL game somebody would have gotten their ass kicked by now.
yeah, this small rink is making for some really physical games. Usually, it takes a while to get to a chippy point in olympic games.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions
Well I have read the lips a few times of our d men and there are some f bombs flying. Things are getting testy on the ice. We need to stay focused and destroy Norway.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 1:40 PM PST up reply actions
I bet it’s tough when the other team’s english is really good. You probably feel like you’re getting to them with an F-bomb campaign.

So true......
I’ve been all over Europe and everywhere I go no matter what, everyone knows the f you. Sometimes thats all they know.

Question of the day..............
Beside our two ducks, what one player would you want from Team USA to play on the ducks regardless of cap and why?
I’ve said Parise before, but it would probably be Ryan Miller or Joe Pavelski. Regardless of cap would definitely be Ryan Miller. Joe Pa can be had affordably, though, this offseason in fact.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 1:38 PM PST up reply actions
As great as Miller is.....
We have Hiller. Our needs in my opinion are at D. A Jack Johnson (even though he is a king) would be a great add to our lines. Forwards I think we are alright. There are some guys I would want but if I had just one pick it would go to our weakest unit which I think is our D. I will say this though our D is young and in a few years I think they will be a major plus for the Ducks.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 1:57 PM PST up reply actions
Team USA’s defense isn’t as impressive as its forwards/goaltending, otherwise I would have plucked a defenseman myself. We could probably use an Orpik or Komisarek (who isn’t in there), and I think Martin might be a better offensive defensemen than our current options or even Johnson, but if we’re plucking a superstar from Team USA, Miller is really where it’s at. Hiller’s nice, but Miller is a franchise goaltender today. He’s a dominant 70 game guy today. So, it’s definitely an upgrade. Guys like Parise and Pavelski provide tremendous depth, especially Pavelski up the middle, but in a world sans cap, I gotta go with the big gun on the team, which is Miller, who just set up a pretty nice breakout on that score.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 2:04 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah that play was pretty pass by Miller. Slashing agaisnt Bobby. That was ugly.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 2:08 PM PST up reply actions
haha, I just realized I asked for two guys who didn’t even go to Vancouver in Komisarek and Martin. Kom really is just a good fit; I don’t necessarily think he’s a great defenseman, but he and Orpik are what we need. Martin is just a better option than Whitney, Wisniewski, Mikkelson, Sbisa, etc., and he’s younger than Rafi. Maybe I don’t think enough of JMFJ, but this is a workman’s blueline that Burke built. Not a lot of outright superstars, and that’s intentional.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 2:08 PM PST up reply actions
Im actually looking forward to Sbisa next year
I think the kid has a good upside to him. I agree that we shouldn’t have a superstar on the blueline no matter how bad I’d want to see Phaneuf in black and orange but we do need a gamechanger on the blueline. Someone who can add a spark to our d.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 2:14 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, i meant that the team usa blueline didn’t have a superstar, so it was tough to pick there. I don’t have any problem with the ducks blueline having one. Sbisa’s good. Smart player, smooth skater. I think he should’ve played this year. Our photographer caught him practicing his fighting with Mikkelson at camp. So I’m pretty jazzed to see him too.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions
It’s like Rafi heard me call him old.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 2:13 PM PST up reply actions
Keep driving those nails....
6 – 1. Rafi has had a good game. I like the hard nose playing he is puting out.
by Newport Rebel on Feb 18, 2010 2:15 PM PST up reply actions
I think Wiz should be looking to a little Michigan guy like Rafi as a model for his game. Just smart play and good offense, leave the blocks and big checks to the big boys. Make sure you’re controlling your forward, and force him to try and control you.

GAME SET MATCH!
USA USA USA. Overall we played well. We should not have given up that shorthanded. This game should have been 7-0.
It would be nice to completely put teams away before facing the favorites, but Canada had trouble with them for a couple periods, too, so I think it’s not a bad gauge of where we are compared to the medal countries right now.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 2:19 PM PST up reply actions
Well I thought we did put them away quite well. It has to be tough for our boys not to “look through” these early team towards Canada. So far so good for USA. The play in general looked more sharp then the game agaist the Swiss. As the games go on I think we are going to get better and better.

just got on from school for a bit what happened?? who did team USA play??

Unfortunately, I can’t think of any good Ryan shirts. All I can come up with are anti-Whitney ideas.
if you come up with a particularly good anti-whitney shirt, put it in for voting. I’m waiting until we get about five good ideas before I put a poll up.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 4:51 PM PST up reply actions
Probably a low-blow and might not make a good shirt
But I couldn’t resist.

HAHA
we probably couldn’t get his face on there legally, but that’s awesome. It’s just awesome.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 5:50 PM PST up reply actions
an examiner writer was just asking me if Bobby was a nice guy, and my response was just that with that rough a childhood, I wouldn’t blame him if he wasn’t. So, yeah, low blow, but I love the guy.

wow. can’t believe switzerland got on the board with time expiring. Brodeur’s having carolina flashbacks
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 5:52 PM PST reply actions
Great game
I’m so torn on this one! I think I want the Swiss to win just to shake things up. Plus, they’re really making Sbisa sound like a monster out there. I’m honestly having trouble picking him out in a sea of red and white.
"Abtholoootleee"
he climbed their depth chart in that first game. Kid’s good. Plus, Hiller is really backstopping this team into competition in this game. I knew he had Thornton’s number, but since when does Patrick Marleau have trouble scoring on Hiller?
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:16 PM PST up reply actions
Huh? You can outwait hiller? worst advice ever. When Hiller’s not sure, he relies on what Allaire taught him. So on a breakaway or anything where he as no choices, it’s a good idea to hold on to the puck. But if Hiller’s jumping forward or guessing, it’s always a good idea not to get into mind games with him
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:19 PM PST reply actions
OMG
Hiller’s gonna be insufferable in the Ducks locker room in March. If I were him, I would just leave autographed stones or bricks in Perry and Getzlaf’s lockers
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:27 PM PST reply actions
hiller’s jumping forward. he’s feeling it
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions
you get off the ice and his finger prints are all over you
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:41 PM PST up reply actions
Ok, seriously
This is the most exciting hockey game I’ve watched since the Detroit series in the playoffs last year. I love Olympic hockey!!
"Abtholoootleee"
i really think this smaller ice surface is a good idea, and that’s coming from a college hockey fan.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:43 PM PST up reply actions
pretty sure hiller’s faking, but it did mess up his helmet. so he did get hit hard enough for something to happen
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:44 PM PST reply actions
Rick Nash weighs a lot.
It had to hurt.

Sbisa timed that perfectly. LORD. Why did Bob Murray send this kid back to the WHL
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:47 PM PST reply actions
He looks better than anybody on the Canadian team right now.
WTF

by Floyd Gondoli on Feb 18, 2010 6:48 PM PST up reply actions
I actually think Boynton was less equipped to deal with our failure this season than Sbisa would have been. Maybe we can re-sign him early so we don’t have to pay him too much on his second contract.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:50 PM PST up reply actions
So then,
If our “failure” this year was going to be a lot of losses and potentially missing the playoffs, then what difference would a young, high energy, defensive wizard have made in that potential outcome?
"Abtholoootleee"
by Floyd Gondoli on Feb 18, 2010 6:53 PM PST up reply actions
i don’t think carlyle and murray were saying he’d be bad for the team as much as the experience would be bad for him. But, it’s like, look how bad it was for Boynton. experience doesn’t mean it’ll be easy on you.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:59 PM PST up reply actions
so someone HAS to get two points, right?
I don’t feel they’ve explained it well to me. but there’s no tie where the third point is just left on the table, right?
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 18, 2010 6:53 PM PST reply actions
All games are worth 3 points.
Regulation Win = 3
OT Win (sudden death or shootout) = 2
OT Loss (sudden death or shootout) = 1
Regulation Loss = 0
