Open Gameday Thread - Gold

ARTHUR:
US versus Canada II: Electric Boogaloo.

It looks like everyone who left for Vancouver two weeks ago (and isn't a goaltender) will return to the Ducks locker room with a medal.  There will be two Bronzes and at least two Golds, and regardless of what happens, two more than you will see in the Sharks locker room.

Going into tonight's game, Bobby Ryan has the following statline:

GP G A Pts PIM +/- GWG PPG SHG SOG S% TM
5 1 1 2 0 3 0 0 0 11 9.09 49:34:00

Ryan Whitney's statline, owing to being wisely kept off the ice for much of the tournament, is blank.  Their Ducks teammates born north of the border proffer the following contributions:

Name GP G A Pts PIM +/- GWG PPG SHG SOG S% TM
Perry 6 3 1 4 2 3 0 0 0 16 18.75 76:39:00
Getzlaf 6 3 3 6 2 3 1 1 0 15 20 80:08:00
Niedermayer 6 1 2 3 4 3 0 0 0 13 7.69 118:56:00

Sequels are generally unwatchable, but I'm holding out hope for this game.

apparently we can if we katy bar the door. Pretty sure we had a giant guard dog sleeping on the welcome mat, but I guess a katy bar couldn’t hurt.

whew

broken stick does not equal goal there. thank jesus

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 12:32 PM PST reply actions

really? I felt like McCreary took his sweet time. he was on the other side of the play. I don’t know that he knew where it was, and there was about two counts where no one was stabbing at it

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 12:37 PM PST up reply actions

well, in terms of, if god was a referee, yeah, it never should have blown. But in terms of calling the play dead when you can’t find the puck from where you are on the ice, mccreary could’ve blown it hte moment luongo put his stick over it and no one jabbed at it for two counts. I feel he gave the US some extra time as the home team there

Yeah, earlier in the tournament, when he wasn’t on a line with perry and getzlaf.

Hmm, I seem to be confused.

Rest in peace, Rory. When I think of some of the greatest moments in my Angels fandom, I hear your voice describing them. Thanks for everything you gave us.

not too many people even on there, though. Eightyseven’s a lot of fun. Her signature, for example, is this:

I think Canada underachieved in terms of how they got the end result

With such a stacked team, you’d think they would crush each team they faced, just as their original expectations suggested.
Is it coaching? Because from the outside looking in as a fan, the US team did much more with the players we had.

by SoCal12 on Feb 28, 2010 3:25 PM PST reply actions

I’d say coaching was relevant. Jumbo Joe’s line wasn’t dominant, it took forever for them to figure out that Morrow worked best with Getzlaf and Perry and the pairings seemed to stall periodically. But that was one hell of a bench and they have a gold medal, so I don’t know that I would say that to any of those coaches’ faces.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

I think Canada’s main problem was that they didn’t do a good job picking their team. They picked some washed up or declining old faces, just for the sake of tradition. For example: Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger. Both of which were criticized by Babcock and Scott was even criticized by J.R. And quite frankly both, especially Scotty, deserved the criticism. Scotty looked like Wiz out there, he was constantly out of position.

by yankeeken on Feb 28, 2010 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

That's a little unfair

Experience counts a lot at these things. Burke preferred Paul Martin, even injured, for that reason. The 2002 US team had plenty of washed up players and they got this far. Yzerman could’ve gone with a lecavalier or some high scoring options, but he did something similar yo’ Burke in choosing existing combinations. It didn’t necessarily work with Keith/seabrook or the sharks line, but Getz/pers showed up and they definitely took the gold. Finland struggled too on the way tithe bronze. The US team is really the only team that impressed throughout

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 8:47 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

yo' = auto spelling correct for "to"

And is a little too revealing about my texting habits

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 8:48 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Regardless, Scotty looked like Wiz today. Both of team USA’s goals were partially due to Scotty being out of position.

by yankeeken on Feb 28, 2010 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t fault Scotty on that second goal. The TV crew called him out of position but Scotty’s not the biggest guy. Fronting in that position and trying to block the shot wasn’t a bad call. Id expect wiz to make the same call because he’s even smaller, but it wasn’t irresponsible or boneheaded or anything.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 28, 2010 10:56 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Does anyone know if anybody new made it into the Triple Gold Club ?

by Kducker on Feb 28, 2010 7:02 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I really liked what I saw out of Parise in that final game. Besides the obvious game-tying goal with seconds left, the guy played with passion.

"You know? I might not be wealthy or cool or even intelligent," I said to myself. Then I felt like there was more to that sentence, but I guess there wasn’t.
