Open Gameday Recap Thread Ducks @ Kings
DANIEL:
The Ducks blew an opportunity to pick up ground in the playoff race and instead fell to 10th in the conference. The Ducks erased a 3 goal deficit in the third period only to fail epically and surrender two goals in the last five minutes. Jason Blake scored his first goal as a Duck, Ryan Getzlaf had a couple of assists, and Matt Beleskey scored in his return to the top line.
Jonas Hiller on the other hand, got lit up. It wasn't all his fault, seeing as how his vision was constantly impaired by Michael Handzus' backside. The Ducks inability to clear the front of the net was ultimately their undoing tonight. It's hard to tell if the Ducks were owned by the Kings, or if they just didn't fight for the full 60 minutes. Either way. It's two points they won't pick up in the standings.

It was agonizing watching
the Ducks turn over the puck over and over. The defense looked weak.

Yes the defense looked out of it. Scotty didn’t even look as comfortable. I noticed the forwards were staying really high too. I thought Carlyle gave up too early on the Blake-Koivu-Selanne line.. They put the kings back on their heels because of their speed. And the RPG line needs to start taking more shots its getting annoying now

Everything good that Blake-Koivu-Selanne did was because of Koivu
Blake’s goal was a gift. Koivu had Quick locked in looking top right and made the no look pass to Blake for the gimmie. I don’t know what’s up with Teemu, but maybe he’s just not comfortable with Blake.
I was saying boo-urns.

I don’t know what’s up with Teemu, but maybe he’s just not comfortable with Blake.
I alluded to it these same difficulties when he was playing with Lupul, and it really comes down to basic pee-wee level line construction. When you have two guys that want to be shooting the puck, it’s like having two skinny wingers in Nintendo Ice Hockey. They can’t get or keep the puck, they can only skate into open ice and shoot it. I love Selanne, but his problem is probably just that he can’t play with another Selanne— not that the fact that he can’t make a 15 ft. pass helps. Teemu needs a fat guy (Artyukhin) or another medium sized guy (Ryan, though Sexton fits the Nintendo player type better).
Blake did dish a nice chance to Koivu against the Red Wings, though.

I totally agree. I think the reason why Kunitz-McDonald-Selanne worked so well was because kunitz is a cruise missile creating more room for teemu to shoot the puck. R2 was a great idea on paper but hes loppy. As for now, I dont think Blake fits on the top line. Maybe even throw beleskey on the second like to create room for teemu and koivu. If Carlyle still wants to keep bobby on the top line. Or even form a 3rd scoring line with two way players. I just dont see that happening until lupul comes back. I hate to say this on a ducks blog but I think the kings have something going with Frolov-Handzus-Brown which is there checking line that has scored 104 points on the season (i know that wasnt the edited line at the beg of the game but it was at the end when it counts)

That Kings line is kind of special because they make as much money as a top 6 line, but Handzus primarily brings size and Brown primarily brings hurt. They could actually get away with a fast 500k rookie on the wing instead of Frolov. The Ducks are kind of stuck with too many Frolovs, not too many Handzus/Browns. A line of all Lupuls can’t really work out West.

The Kings line is different in many ways but i think the ducks could put together a checking line that is similar, mainly defensive but can score more often than a normal checking line. Handzus is a big body and there arent to many 6’4 checkers but maybe something for the ducks to think about. It adds another possible scoring line for murray and keeps defensive oriented line for carlyle. But like you said the kings are paying for it
