Whitney or Wisniewski?

ARTHUR:
I started writing a post called "How Bad Is Whitney, Really?" but in drawing up the charts, the conclusion was no different from the last time I did this, that is to say, all of the Ducks defensemen suck.

So, I'll just put the numbers here, and ask you lot which one is sucking it up worse, Whitney or Wisniewski.  Is it the 5'11" defenseman who hurts himself pretending to be 6'4" or the 6'4" defenseman who plays like he's 5'11"?

(Thanks to BehindTheNet for the advanced stats through 56 GP; the shot type/distance data represents 5-on-5 shots only.  All other stats taken from NHL.com)

I tried to put in as many individual stats as I could, but both players are highly susceptible to the special teams unit, wiz to the pk and whitney to the PP

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 5, 2010 3:08 PM PST reply actions

can we combine them into one player?

by CUnitSoldier on Feb 5, 2010 3:27 PM PST reply actions

Whit-newski would be a hard hitter and a good shot blocker, but a lot of the problems would still be there: turnovers, blocked slap shots, inability to control their check, especially in front of the net. People would still find a way to hate that poor sewn-together-freak of a blueliner.

I should point out that I was surprised by the shot blocking numbers

for all his theatrical, I-almost-died shot blocks, Wisniewski is actually trailing Whitney and Eminger in shots blocked for the team.

Whitney's getting WAY more PP time

And only has one more point on the season?

Case closed.

Ohh! You guys!

I don’t know if spending more time on our anemic power play last month (or for the stretch of any of our road trips) is a reason to expect points. Plus, Whitney does have 5 more power play points on the season, so he is producing commensurate to his increased time.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 6, 2010 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, Wiz is making up that time on the PK, though, and he still has less GA?

Ohh! You guys!

by brokenyard on Feb 6, 2010 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

it’s tough with all of the team stats, but you’re talking about a guy who’s put up his best stats on this team playing with Niedermayer. Whitney’s worst stats to date actually came playing with Wisniewski, so the group stats are always tough. They both have their own individual flaws, so it’s tough to choose, but there is no one stat that closes the case on this.

On that note

I bet if I put up the Whitney/Brookbank stats (when the second line was hot) against the Boynton/Wisniewski stats, Wiz would look like a goddamn AHLer.

I’m voting…

They’re both terrible!

it’s a bit of sophie’s choice, i know. Wiz has the lead right now, I think for the sake of not being tied up for more than this year and endearing himself to Ducks fans. I think we should take a cue from Burke’s Team USA management and trade them both and try to get Paul Martin, even with one working arm.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 6, 2010 11:46 AM PST up reply actions

I agree, they do both suck.

Wiz is a useless bum and Whitney is an overrated hack.

As much as I hate Wiz, I think Whitney may be worse. If only due to the fact that he is paid too much and always reminds me that Pittsburgh has Kunitz.

I was saying boo-urns.

Kunitz, who hasn’t worked out for them either. Maybe we can do a tradeback. They’ll still have Tangradi. They’ll still win in the deal.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 6, 2010 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

Yea, I gotta agree, the price tag on Whitney’s name makes him so much worse in my book. The fact that he’s a pansy doesn’t help either.

Well, despite the cap hit, Whitney is only making 750K more than Wiz this year. So, he only has to be performing 750K better if you factor salary into who is performing worse this year. if you’re mad we’re stuck with him, then that’s a whole different Murray-related matter.

So when’s the wedding?

Ohh! You guys!

by brokenyard on Feb 8, 2010 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

Between me and who? I used to play stay-at-home defense, so I’m not a big fan of either of these guys. When I defended Wisniewski, it was just against people saying he should be smarter and not make so many mistakes. I don’t think that’s a fair expectation of offensive-defenseman; they’re not very smart generally, and they need to make mistakes to generate offense. I haven’t really defended Whitney that much. I mean, the guy creates turnovers instead of offense and he’s a teddy bear, but I don’t think his grossly overpaid years start until next year.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Feb 8, 2010 2:39 PM PST up reply actions

when's the wedding between brokenyard and Wisniewski?

you put him down for having better point totals for less power play time (forget that he actually has less power play points), despite the fact that this pp was 0-fer on almost every road trip this season and especially without Selanne. Then you want to give Wiz credit for what was an awful PK to open the season before they put in a new system and new forwards? I mean, if you’ve yet to give the guy credit for anything he actually does on his own, and there’s some good stuff there for all the bad.
