Cooke Not Suspended; Campbell Hints At Standard
ARTHUR:
The Penguins Matt Cooke will not be suspended for his hit on Marc Savard according to NHL.com. Following the GM meeting in Boca Raton, the NHL general managers have recommended a lateral, back pressure, blindside penalty for next year, and Colin Campbell has said that, under the proposed rule, Cooke would have been suspended. Also, that a stiffer punishment would be in play for repeat offenders.

Consistency is Meaningless
In explaining his decision, NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said that the ruling was based on consistency involving similar incidents. Philadelphia’s Mike Richards was not suspended for a similar hit on Florida’s David Booth last October, so using that as precedent, Cooke was not suspended either.
As one of the articles commenters pointed out, consistency is useless is you are consistently wrong.
As I said in Rink Side Radio chat room on Monday, sadly I don’t see this whole head shot issue being resolved until a Todd Bertuzzi case arises.
I thought Booth was the whole reason for the discussion.
Isn’t that why we have this rule? Because of the Richards hit?

the rule isn’t effective yet, but Cambell is basically saying that this year, these aren’t penalties. Next year, if the rule is approved, both would be penalties under the rule as currently written.
