***Ducks Recall Calder***

THE TELETYPE:
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that they have recalled Kyle Calder from the Toronto Marlies.  The recall comes on the heels of injuries to Ryan Getzlaf and Teemu Selanne.  Calder was waived by the Ducks and reassigned to the AHL at the end of December.  He had two assists in 14 games this year, and he has 11 goals and 13 assists in 31 games with the Marlies.

What’s with all the Paul Kariya hate on this poll?

by Daniel AC on Mar 15, 2010 6:05 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t know if it counts as hate. The question certainly wasn’t written that way. It’s descending in order of ridiculousness. An NHL player who played well for us, an NHL player who never played well for us, a busted hockey player who never made the NHL for us or a fictional character. I mean, if you say Greg Goldberg, you hate you some Kyle Calder.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 15, 2010 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

actually if the ridiculousness is increasing, then Kyle Calder is awesome should be last. Hrm.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 15, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

The question asks us to compare Calder to previous options. All of whom, except Kariya, didn’t have the best history with the Ducks. Of course Goldberg has no history. Still, the question is structured to make it seem like we are choosing the lesser of two evils, so I inferred that people were hating on Kariya.

by Daniel AC on Mar 15, 2010 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Kariya is a stand-by answer for pure fan hatred, but you’re saying you’d rather have a guy you personally don’t like than Kyle Calder. Goldberg is basically saying you’d rather send a pack of Marlboro Lights out there with a catching glove than Kyle Calder. The poll allows for both types of answers, but by no means is Kariya the greatest insult to Kyle Calder. It makes sense if you think about it, which you clearly haven’t.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 15, 2010 7:51 PM PDT up reply actions

No matter how you look at it, Kariya is a negative choice. If it is an option of pure fan hatred, meaning I’d “rather have a guy you (I) personally don’t like than Kyle Calder” than the assumption is still I don’t like Paul Kariya. At that point, the people who choose Kariya are saying they don’t like him, thus justifying my question about why people are hating on him in the poll.

If a fan is left to interpret this in a positive way, as in “Of course I’d rather see Kariya in a Ducks Jersey than Kyle Calder, when is he coming back?” Then the poll doesn’t really tell us which kind of answer a fan makes and is therefore ineffectual. Even if you rank them in terms of ridiculousness, or improbability, it is still implied that Kyle Calder is a negative addition by virtue of comparing him to improbable additions to the line up. The construction of the question implies that all of the answers are negative. Usually, note I said usually, questions like this are used to choose between the lesser of two evils, like I’d rather lose a hand than an eye. Obviously losing a hand would suck, but not as much as losing an eye would suck. Therefore in this question, " Having Kariya back would suck, but not as much as Calder coming back," is still a valid interpretation, as is any question wondering why people who answer the poll would think that it would suck to have Kariya back in a Ducks jersey.

If you want to say I over-thought the poll, I’m listening. If you say I didn’t think about it at all, that’s clearly a false statement. I just didn’t think of one interpretation that you had.

by Daniel AC on Mar 15, 2010 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe think about it this way. If someone answers Calder is awesome, they’re crazy. If they answer Kariya, they’re probably saying that their personal hatred of Calder is so intense that they could put aside their feelings for Kariya to see Calder suffer. If they answer anything else, they’re saying that their opinion of how much Calder contributes to the team is so little that they would be willing to see lesser players start in his place.

The poll is not designed to relay any direct vitriolic hate toward Kariya, nor is it designed to tell us anything valuable. It’s just an opportunity to make a joke. Anyone who hates Kariya could just as easily have answered something else, as one answer excludes the others.

i erased the comments where I railed you for applying purely one-dimensional reasoning to this. If you REALLY think about it, REALLY apply your spatial reasoning to it, you’ll see that you hadn’t given it much thought at all

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 16, 2010 12:39 AM PDT up reply actions

You erase the comment, but still reference it, and in fact repeat it. Not exactly effective, lol. Again, my reasoning isn’t one dimensional, it simply isn’t your reasoning. You’re identifying a form of thought that you disagree with as one dimensional. I got the joke, but the joke is built on the premise that people hate Kariya, in order to get the joke you have to admit that there is hate for Kariya, and it was that sentiment that I questioned.

Heh heh. I had to moderate myself there, everyone. No ad hominem arguments in this community. I emailed my comment to Daniel so I could call him that to his face, and that’s perfectly fine.

Of course Goldberg has no history.

Oh, and how dare you. I guess a shorthanded goal against the Eden Hall Varsity team counts for nothing these days . . . HAHAHAHAHA

hopefully they don’t send Calder out. I actually think they should have recalled MacGregor Sharp. We need another center if Getzlaf’s out. Nokelainen was key the last time that was the case.

Let's go Ducks.

Kyle Calder carries with him the white flag of surrender.
Season over!
So who do you guys like in the draft?

You needed a write-in with Greg Goldberg on the ballot? Poor Kyle Calder.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 16, 2010 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Alexei Smirnov? He was almost as big of a bust as Stanislav Chistov.

by yankeeken on Mar 16, 2010 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

bigger actually. Chistov played for us with limited effort, but he actually scored a game tying goal in our first sweep of detroit in the playoffs and became a somewhat useful Top Sixer for a period of time, even developing enough value for us to trade him for something. Smirnov was an outright, single season bust. Our only bigger bust to date would be Logan MacMillan if he never sees an AHL game after his recent troubles.
