Good to see Pielmeier outdueled Pogge
Actually, good to see we were allowed to throw in a 23GP goaltender. Now to update my Prospects list.

I don’t know though, think Pielmeier can be the back up next year. I don’t think we should go out and spend money on a back up for Hiller.
i think that’s why pielmeier was brought up to work with Peeters. Murray wanted to know if this can be a 20 game guy at the NHL level. He’s certainly got the confidence, but I’d be surprised if anyone but Peeters made the final call here.

Plus, now we have TWO athletic goaltenders. We’re just throwing the Allaire butterfly years out the window. It’s all circus goaltending from here on out.

Current trade chatter on tfp scaring me to death
(12:06pm) Lots more chatter surrounding Oilers, expected to be very busy (Souray, Gilbert, Moreau, etc.).
Sadly, Murray has asked about Moreau, who played for him in Chicago.

Ward isn’t the D we needed, and now he’s shopping for forwards?! Why does Murray make me hate him after he does something I don’t hate.
we did get a d without a 2nd round pick when the seidenberg deal implied the price was going up at the deadline. I don’t know if he’s STILL shopping for forwards, but he did ask after Moreau (which is a royally stupid thing to do) earlier in the season. If the Edmonton front office is shopping Moreau, I doubt they have any real takers. So, they should be calling Murray like a fat girl booty calling her ex boyfriend.

I like the Ward deal. I don’t think he’s the D we needed, but he’s more than serviceable and he’s a great penalty killer. I just think we’re way too crowded up front. When you insinuated he might be looking. I panicked like little John in Robin Hood Men in Tights when he helped that fat lady off the horse and got trapped.
PuckDaddy chat discussing how the Caps NEED a new D-man. Too bad we do too, otherwise we could trade Wiz for some of their forward depth.
if they take Blake, I’d give them Blake and Wiz for a pack of Marlboro Lights on a 3M cap hit.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 9:27 AM PST up reply actions
they just straight added Scott Walker. where are they getting all this room to make moves. If it’s like that, we really should be trying to unload a forward on them for one of our defenseman. We technically dont’ need wiz at this point.

wiz/whitney/festerling, any of which can be wrapped up in a Jason Blake shaped bow

tfp says younger guys are in play
i kind of wish he made a move for a younger guy. probably would’ve been expensive, but if there are younger guys in play, it would have been nice to actually replace wisniewski as an asset

Oh!
EDM is looking for size.
Maybe we can send them Artyuk…..oh.
Damn. I’d really like to have Souray, but I don’t know what, if anything, I would give up that Edmonton would like.

what we give them usually turns to crap like a wish from a monkey’s paw. even when they wrest it from our hands, it doesn’t stay nice for very long.

I feel like Sutton is more of an insurance policy because Volchenkov wants a raise. I think the Senators are legitimately trying to get a deal done with him. Depending on how big a raise he wants, I think it’s the kind of thing that could be had for what we paid for Ward, but only if the Sens are willing to give up on negotiations.

Chelios and Schneider
two guys that played with Larry Robinson on the ’87 Canadiens could be in the playoffs this year.

tfp says Tomas Kaberle would consider waiving his no trade
for the right offer. Jesus, tell me we’re making that offer.

whitney and blake for kaberle, finger and a prospect. Everybody’s happy.

They would take Blake back?
Wishful thinking, Arthur. I think we’re all just looking for somewhere to unload Blake and his contract today.

well, we’d be getting Finger in return. We would still suffer an insufferable contract; we would just have the opportunity of a taster’s spoon dosage of Blake— easily enough to realize that’s not our flavor. They get a long term 4M guy who works in the east. We get at least one more year of Kaberle and a decent prospect to fill out the cupboard. Our top drafted defensemen are still incubating, so we can stomach Finger if we can get Brookbank back cheaply and keep festerling or mikkelson in the lineup. whitney looked good in the east and he made team usa, plus his actual salary doesn’t go up until next year. Now’s the time to deal him to an east team. We don’t want anyone actually seeing him play in the next year or so.

I’m with it. Money works, everybody gets what they want. Our d is set for a playoff run, Toronto gets a little scoring back and a PP man to replace kaberle. I think Burke asks for a pick too though. At least a second rounder. Murray should pay it too.
by Daniel AC on Mar 3, 2010 10:56 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
giving up Poni, I think they’d be willing to get a forward back, even if he’s slumped this season. Clearing house in that D is enough reason to take a deal that rids them of Finger. Whitney’s salary goes up, but his cap hit stands pat so it would be a good deal for the Leafs. I doubt Burke can get a pick without a shakedown; it’s much more likely that Burke goes after a prospect that he drafted. And Murray, having not drafted that prospect and already dealt away Tangradi and O’Dell would acquiesce to that.

is Pereault a defensive prospect. I was just thinking about how they must have a few stocked up since Pothier and Poti are starting to rack up the years.
Also, TFP board says Toskala got moved again. Still waiting to hear what we got back.
The toskala move makes some sense if Murray is working on something that involves a guy making money. We get Curtis Mclhinney, who makes like nothing. It’s not like Hiller is going to leave the crease for the rest of the year anyway. The save in cap money let’s us add a serious forward or D. I hope it’s D
I’m surprised Calgary let us get away with that, unless they think Kippy can padawan Toskala back into good-ness. Based on the olympics, he should be padawan-ing himself. there’s enough free money this season to add a big expiring contract now.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 11:24 AM PST up reply actions
I know!!! Bring on Kaberle, or Kubina…or dare I say it…Kariya!!!!
Ok the Kariya one is ridiculous, but Murray could make a serious offer for Kaberle or Kubina and he’d be protected against Wiz leaving and at least softening the blow of a Niedermayer departure.
So with the acquisitions of McElhinney and now Macdonnald, does Murray expect our goalies to dress up as defensemen?
we’re pretty thin at goaltender. MacDonald is a career AHLer, but maybe he can start in the minor leagues ahead of Cousineau and/or Pielmeier to ease their transition.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 12:24 PM PST up reply actions
No, he isn't
but he was the cheapest option available. In hindsight, I would’ve paid a second round pick for a Sutton, but Murray and Madden are making out the Ducks’ draft plan, not me. Maybe they’ve got something they can’t tamper with planned for this year. It would be nice to make more picks than LA in LA’s home draft.

not really
Visnovsky gives us an upgrade over Wisniewski, but it would still be nice to have a large defensively effective presence.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 12:43 PM PST up reply actions
He’s our legitimate number two defenseman. Whitney was given the whole season to fill that role and not only did he fail miserably but I truly thought he was playing for the opposition most nights.
I wanted Lubo months ago when people brought up Souray coming to Anaheim. Souray is a defensive liability, as is Whitney. Lubo is not. He’s a great puck mover and though not very physical (like Whitney) he’s a great upgrade for us.
though not very physical
I think that’s the problem. Visnovsky is basically what we hope Wisniewski could be, a smallish offensive specialist who can be smart with the puck, but that still leaves us without that physical defenseman. Maybe Volchenkov and the Sens wont’ see eye to eye, but until Murray actually spends more than 3M on a guy who plays defense, I can’t say he’s purchased an “answer.” Visnovsky gives us smart, responsible offense while getting rid of Whitney and making Wisniewski’s ask for a raise laughable, but it isn’t exactly what we were missing. We had plenty of offensive-defense; Lubo is just an ideal upgrade of the nonsense we were working with (and a quality replacement for Niedermayer in the long term), but the “answer” was a real shutdown guy.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 1:09 PM PST up reply actions
Don’t you think Ward may be able to help with that shutdown role for the rest of the season and possibly the post-season?
I think Murray made two acquisitions today. Ward should help us in the short-term and Lubo is an incredibly great upgrade over the Witless Wonder.
I’m more than satisfied with Murray’s moves today and I think he’ll find someone to fill that void of the shutdown defensman role that you speak of in the offseason.
well, i think Ward is a good player, but you said yourself:
I think we’re thinner on D. Ward isn’t the answer
I’m happy with the moves today, too, but if you were unsatisfied with Ward as an “answer,” I don’t see how Visnovsky creates the total fix, not when he’s more of an upgrade of Wisniewski than an added shutdown presence. The new acquisitions should limit our turnovers and streamline our offense from the blueline (where I believe we sit last in defensemen goals in the league), but Visnovsky is not a panacea on both sides of the puck.
I think we got significantly better today, but someone like Sutton would’ve gone a longer way to clearing traffic, net-front play, and holding up against the forecheck, all places where Visnovsky can only do so much. Maybe there wasn’t an ‘answer’ this deadline.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Mar 3, 2010 1:45 PM PST up reply actions
Everytime I hear Aaron Ward, I immediatly start thinking of Lance Ward
I guess Festerling will be regulated to 7th defenseman duties with the addition of Ward and Lubo.
