***Ducks Trade Toskala To Calgary***
THE TELETYPE:
Per TSN, Anaheim has shipped goaltender Vesa Toskala to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Curtis McElhinney. McElhinney, who becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, makes 500K (535K cap hit) this year and 570K next year. Toskala would have collected gamechecks on a 4M salary for the rest of this season until becoming an unrestricted free agent in July.
UPDATE: The Ducks also acquired goaltender Joey MacDonald from Toronto for a 7th Round pick in 2011.

apparently nobody cares about this trade over on your end…. backup for backup, it’s more of a change-of-scenery deal (in my opinion) than anything.
i really only popped over to let you know that the kid has more nicknames than any other player i’ve ever seen, though none of them have really stuck. mcbackup, cumac, and (my personal favorite) backelhinney.
one time ahl allstar, he has definitely faltered in calgary, though i did some “research” and think that he got a pretty raw deal under keenan….. this year he played better to start, but definitely lost the team’s confidence and hasn’t played much since xmas.
that’s pretty much it.
best.
haha. we care, but it dumps so much salary this season that we’re anticipating another move on its heels. He may still may lose out this job to our current minor league goaltender, but we’re happy to have a backup with some NHL experience.

I’m starting to have doubts about that bigger deal. TFP says Souray is done for the year. Kubing seems like a long shot, and I don’t really know what other big D-men are on the market right now besides those guys.
who says it’s a d man? Murray already acquired one; no reason to believe he isn’t happy with Ward. Saving gamechecks helps him keep his job, and maybe Peeters said Pielmeier WASN’T ready, but there’s a lot of free money this season. There’s room to do something, and people are still doing. Maybe he’s talking Stempniak with Burke. Maybe he’s just talking salary dump with someone who will take wisniewski. point is, there is suddenly a lot of wiggle room to take on expirings.

Burke had to have gotten a forward from somewhere. Wonder what he gets back in the Stempniak deal

just picks. he had to have made a deal for a forward. wonder if Murray was involved.

We got Joey McDonald from Toronto for a 7th rounder…? I don’t get that one. I guess we’re having a competition for the backup spot?
i’ll add it to the news in this post

MacDonald’s a career AHLer, though, so i doubt there’s any real ‘competition’ there. The only NHL play I remember him getting was DiPietro-related

Still, doesn’t make sense to me. I’m assuming the prices were too steep for murray to make a legitimate move.
makes sense to me
Pielmeier and Cousineau still haven’t seen AHL time. If Piel can’t beat out McElhinney, we can use MacDonald to ease the transition for our other netminders. Also, having an experienced AHL netminder should help us get an affiliate

Who knows. I don’t know how I’m feeling. I don’t disagree with the Aaron Ward pick up. I just think Murray needed to do a little more. He’s got a small mess on his hands with this Blake/Lupul thing and the surplus of forwards, as well as the questions surrounding Wiz and Whitney. I don’t know. Was just hoping for me.
yep. that’s the best one for sure…. i won’t take credit, AWM made it up.

Wisniewski can consider himself replaced, son.

he’s a smaller guy who’s proven he can be offensively effective over almost a decade in the West. It makes much more sense for us to throw our lot in with him rather than an Eastern offensive defenseman like Whitney or a bottom pairing injury risk like Wisniewski. That being said. You never know.

we got it up. took me a second to confirm the salary numbers

This trade is the biggest surprise to me. Toronto fans made it sound like Toskala was unmovable. Maybe this means there is hope for dumping Blake sometime next season.
maybe they want to be able to rest kippy during their playoff run, or have an injury backup assuming they make a playoff run.

Blake has been playing well for us…I was glad to see Toskala get unloaded, and Whitney obviously, but I thought Pogge was worth more, and Nokie I thought would garner more return…guess not.
Blake played well for us last night. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. He was on the fourth line before the Olympic break and is a minus-3 for a reason, not to mention how he was playing in Toronto. I hope he turns it around as much as anybody else, but Sexton is pretty much there to remind him he can be replaced on that second line if he doesn’t turn it on.
Pogge really tanked in Toronto, both in his NHL opportunities and his three years in the AHL. He’s played well in his limited AHL time this year, but he probably still needs more time in the minors. It makes sense to send him out the door so Pielmeier and Cousineau can have as full an AHL year as possible. And when you consider we got him for a conditional late round pick, and we got a player for him after putting him in a couple dozen AHL games, I think we made off like bandits there.
