Rob Blake Hangs 'Em Up

Out of deference to the Stanley Cup Finals, he hasn't made the official announcement yet, but citing an article in CSN Bay Area, Fear The Fin is reporting that Rob Blake is calling it a career.

I thought about making this a separate post for two reasons:

1.  I have fond memories of Blake from that '93 Kings team.  The '93 series with Montreal was the first NHL game I ever attended, and though I couldn't put it in context at the time, Coffey's departure meant a young Blake (and an even younger Alexei Zhitnik and Darryl Sydor) had to manage the Los Angeles blueline.  And he did fine out there, with McSorley's lapse in judgment ultimately undoing the team.

2. In rivalry terms, Blake didn't really do much to help the Kings and Sharks in the last decade.  After the trade that would eventually get him his Cup, Blake needed seven games to eliminate his former team, punctuating the purpose of the trade, which is that the Kings would have to suffer for his success.  He went back, supposedly to retire there, but ended up with the Sharks, where I never felt he was a gamechanger.  This season, especially, where they gave him the C, I didn't see him making a difference.  So, if anyone not wearing a Ducks jersey is responsible for the Ducks being the most successful California hockey team in the last decade, it's Rob Blake.

Thank you, Rob Blake.

Wait a second here … this does not sound like a “If A = B and B = C, therefore A = C” type of sentence. Your logic is faulty somehow. :)

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

haha. During the regular season last year, he speared Corey Perry in the nuts. But that didn’t really help you guys in teh playoffs against us. :-) I wouldn’t say he sabotaged the Sharks chances as much as he did the Kings after they pulled that awesome upset on Detroit, but he was a non-factor in getting you guys your eight wins this year.

I should also note that I have fond memories of people pointing out he came out of Bowling Green State. He was definitely an NCAA success story.

And the owner of what was probably the most ridiculous hip check of the last 20 years.

He also had a pretty brutal slap shot, which in the era of not so great protective equipment, definitely discouraged shot blocking attempts.
