***Anaheim Signs Koivu at 2 Years, 5M***

THE TELETYPE:
Per the Ducks Twitter, the Anaheim Ducks have signed center Saku Koivu for two years at 2.5M per year.  Koivu made 3.25M last season, after finishing his last large contract for Montreal, with whom he'd spent his entire career.

multi-year on a 35+ is tough, but 2.5M still seems very small to me. I think this might actually spell something bigger on the horizon. Doubt Koivu would come back to a losing team AND take a paycut, 35+ contract or not

This is HUGE. I can’t believe the money is so small. I agree there has to be something huge.

Lets hope so

I’m glad we got some good news today. This makes me feel much better and would seem to indicate (at the very leat) that Teemu will be back.

it’s tough to ask for a multi-year at 35, and I guess money is tight around the NHL right now for forwards, but he doesn’t have much time left to put toward a Cup. Might as well take that money to go to San Jose if the Ducks aren’t also promising to acquire SOMEONE

Loooooove the contract. Hope this is enough bait for Teemu

Koivu + Kariya + Selanne all for around 9 million a year.

That’s what I’m hoping for.

Bob Murray on Koivu signing: “Last night I thought I had lost Saku for sure. I thought they were going to look at other numbers.”

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

“I thought they were going to look at other numbers.”

What does he mean by this? Like they being other GMs? And other numbers? Like TOI? I’m confused.

I think he means look at what other teams offer them

OC Register says B-Ry turned down

a 5 year 25 million deal according to Murray. Seems like negotiations have hit a serious impasse. Comments in the thread are already comparing Bobby to Kariya.

If I undertsand things correctly, it seems like Bobby would take 4 years 20 but fans seem to hate him for taking a deal that would end in UFA. I’m still not super familiar with what happened with Kariya but are these similar situations?

by PhantomPretender on Jul 1, 2010 4:07 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

It’s kind of the same. Except back then players couldn’t go UFA until they were 31. With Kariya it was also about term, but Bobby would be 27 or 28 and going UFA. I really don’t know what his deal is. McKenzie also said He wants a 3 year deal. It literally sounds like Bobby wants out as soon as possible.

Arthur will probably give you the full story soon.

again, that’s a typo. not three year, four year. Bobby is 23 this summer.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Jul 1, 2010 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

why would you give him four years 20, though, as management? you effectively give him exactly what he wants. Make him a free agent AND pay him what your best players make. I get where he’s coming from as a player, but back in Kariya’s day, the Ducks were being unreasonable. Now, I think Bobby’s being unreasonable. Either way, though, they don’t see eye to eye, and he should be traded rather than make this ugly and influence future negotiations for either party. Trade him to Siberia (Florida) if you want to, but don’t make this a holdout game.

And the team just got a whole lot sexier. I love Sexy Saku.

So happy he’s back. I think he’s a good grounding force in the locker room, which is needed with Scotty gone. And like everyone else, I hope that this is a good sign for Teemu…
