Sooo.... We're Screwed Right?
I know it's the dog days of the NHL off-season but I still gotta feeling Bob isn't gonna do anything big. He should have done something on July 1st when Zybnek and Martin were still available. He's gonna fiddle and waste his time with Wiz so what the hell? We're screwed right? I mean Arthur, what's the point with the gamedays next year when you know full well we aren't making the post-season? Bieska was my last hope at a decent shot at the Cup but now there isn't anyone left. Shoane Morrison? Please the guy sucks. He doesn't score at all and is decent at clearing the crease. If he couldn't help a bad Caps D then he sure as hell can't help us in a major way. Sutton is a nice-addition but who's gonna pair with him? Sbisa and Sutton together would be pretty okay but Sbisa didn't look too good last year with a minus-5 rating before being sent down. I hear he was impressive in the Olympics so I'm sure he's turned his game up. All I'm saying is you know you have an incompetent GM and a sad D when you're considering adding Morrison into the Top-4...... Souray anyone?

Mitchell, Sutton, Johnsonn, all would help, Souray even, but the money is too crazy…we may need Souray + one more for a Lupul or Blake, and Blake I would rather keep…Albert you skipped the Olympics? Sbisa looked like a regular NHL blueliner, he battled in every game. I think he can be top 4 for sure, and he has gotten bigger as well….Murray has been waiting a long time, I just hope you have to eat your words, what is a ligical reason for him to justify NOT making any moves??? If the team makeup stinks, he will (hopefully) be replaced..why would he risk his own ass, and not get better players if the opportunity is there…I would think he will still get a top 4 or top 2 blue liner, but the cash will be the deciding factor….maybe Cap is coming back this fall after all..maybe start a petition.
1) I think people underestimate our D. Sbisa did look great at the Olympics; he has put on muscle. I expect great things next year.
2) It’s a little crazy for me to say this, but people need to calm down. There are so many factors that go into making a deal. Murray can call whoever he wants, but if the other GMs aren’t interested in dealing it isn’t going to happen. A lot of teams don’t know what their exact cap situation is. There will be good players available a little closer to the beginning of the season. This Kovalchuk thing needs to be worked out. You can’t just make things happen. It requires negotiation with parties who are willing to negotiate. I have a feeling Murray isn’t finding a lot of dancing partners right now.
I agree, wait until mid-august to panic.
If we still have not added any new faces to this current defense, then shit your pants.
You can’t expect Murray to sign one guy to replace Scott, because there are no guys like that available. Hopefully last season was just the “Pronger Curse” working it’s magic, because if our team was bad last season WITH Scott then I’m not sure I want to see the same team return WITHOUT Scott and no other real changes to speak of.
Or another option is we can just lower our expectations a bit.
First off, I agree about Sbisa. I think he is going to turn out to be a real stud once he gets settled in on our blueline. I see him being top 4 at the very least, with a damn good shot at top 2. People keep writing him off as nothing. He could have held his own on our blueline last year, but overall it was better to send him down. It means he stays with us for a year longer and it was good for him to mature and grow more in Portland and at the Olympics. I think he’s going to blow some fans away.
Second, I think there are two many die-hard Duck fans being Debbie-Downers right now. I see everyone trying to bail from the plane before it’s even taken off. Hell, it hasn’t even left the terminal yet… Give it some time in my opinion. Instead of being pissed off and frustrated. I guess it goes back to the glass as half full instead of half empty. Maybe I’m just being too optimistic… Who knows. I just think too many people are too antsy for something to happen. There is still a lot of time before training camp. Hold your horses.
I have a feeling Murray isn’t finding a lot of dancing partners right now.
Why do I get the feeling he isn’t even looking for dancing partners?
There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.
It’s an understandable feeling. The entire league has ground down to a halt. I honestly believe that GMs are being very cautious. They’ve had a few years to figure out the CBA and they’ve seen the mistakes that have been made. Almost every contract this summer, except for an NYR contract or two, has been manageable. Some of the guys might be overpriced, but the contracts are still pretty movable. I think GMs are trying to tiptoe through trades and cap management right now. Mix in that Murray has an team imposed budget, and his options are probably very limited.
Honestly, I think he’ll have plenty of chances to pick up a solid guy in August. I also think we should stop thinking about getting extra offense on the blueline. I think Wiz has shown that a guy with the right tools can find a way to put up points in the right situation. Sbisa might not have a nose for the net yet, but he does know how to attack the zone. I remember being very impressed with his ability to get up and down the ice last camp. He was carrying into the zone, and creating some chances. I really think a decent stay at home D will carry us to the post-season. We have a guy in net who can absolutely steal games, so I’ll take our chances as long as we can make the postseason.
You make great points.
A couple other factors might be the Salary CAP has been expected to lower the last two seasons, and they have done everything to avoid that but are probabbly out of tricks and the current CBA is set to expire in September 2011. They can use an exception to extend it one more year, but it’sgetting close.
We just need to relax and lower our expectation a bit. Anaheim had a great run, and we will not be bottom dwellers, but expecting to contend for the Pacific Division every year in a limited market/budget is prob. not realistic.
