Our Options

Okay since I'm sick of speculating on the next Boynton or Eminger Murray will bring in I'll just run down our options left at the blue line. Now that I think about it, Lubo is actually a bonafide number 1 d-man since he can rack up the points like Scotty did. He just needs a capable partner and I think that Lydman signing was a mistake since he really doesn't pose a big frame and rarely hits people. Lydman is more of a smooth skating, positional D-man. We actually have a lot more options now that I think about it other than Bieksa. Haha I spelled it right. Thanks whoever corrected me on that last fanpost. The point is if we sign Sutton or Mitchell our D still sucks balls. I'd rather have us get Brett Burns from Minny or a D-man from the cap-restricted Devils...... So with that here our remaining options via free agency or trade:

Andy Sutton

Willie Mitchell

Shoane Morrison

Brett Burns- Minny needs forwards and we have a bunch of D prospects

Nick Schultz- A big guy Minny might wanna swap for a forward like Lupul or Blake

Colin White- On the block after Kovy's deal blew up their space

Bieksa- Vancouver has too many D-men but the price seems high

Kim Johnsonn- A good player with all-around potential. This guy has a good chance of signing with us if his concussions are done since Chicago is barely breathing under the cap.....

Okay maybe there is some hope.... Just pray to God that we get one of these studs...... (BTW I don't like Morrison)

Why is Kim Johnsson, at 34 years old, an “all-around potential” guy for you? Do you think you’ve yet to see what he can do? Where do you see the apex of his career? 40?

Also, Minnesota said Johnsson’s uncertainty on whether he would continue to play next year factored into their decision to trade him, so he was thinking retirement even before his latest concussion. And the guy’s suffered a concussion per team, one at the hands of the Ducks and multiple knocks with Philly, so I don’t blame him for wanting to call it quits.

Why do I read your posts? lol…

by CoachZ on Jul 27, 2010 3:17 PM PDT reply actions

easy now. I’m sure there are people who like what Albert K has to say. That’s why we have the fanposts section.

Im gonna go cry…. :)

by Albert K on Jul 27, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Despite being plagued with concussions the past 2 seasons, I highly doubt Burns in on the market. He definitely has the most potential out of the Wild’s blue line therefore I would image that they would want to keep him.

Schultz would be a far more likely option although even that might be a stretch. Due to the WIld’s Cap situation our two biggest bargaining chips (Blake & Lupul) wouldn’t be options.

We need more Boyntons.

Of all the guys on this list, I think Shaone Morrison is the best option for a couple of reasons

1) He’s Free! I think we have fantastic D in the cupboard, and if we’re going to move one, I want it to be for an impact player. Other guys are free, which is why I have other criteria.

2) He’s young. He’s only 27. Last season broke a streak of 4 seasons where he played at 70+ games. He has NHL experience, but I don’t think he’s gonna break anytime soon like some of the older more expensive players we could pursue.

3) He’s exactly what we need. This guy is 6’4", 217 lbs., and hasn’t been a minus player in his entire NHL career. I’m not saying the guy is a top 4 defenseman. I’m saying that he can do a lot of the things we need done. He’s a band aid that allows us to keep all of our assets and not pay a premium price. Morrison will probably come in at less than 3.5. Hell, he might come in at less than 3. But he’ll provide some solid defensive play, make minimum mistakes, and provide some toughness. It’s a good fit that let’s us keep our outstanding D prospects.

by Daniel AC on Jul 27, 2010 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

okay you’re nicer than arthur…. so we sign morrison and acquire either bieksa or white? then we’re set!

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 5:53 AM PDT up reply actions

NO! We sign Morrison and we let the young guys play. We’d have Lubo, Lydman, Morrison, Sbisa, Brookbank and then a Mikkelson, Festerling, Newton or Clark. Is it perfect? Of course not. But we keep all of our D prospects. Unless we’re shipping Bobby for an Orpik or a Stall or something, I don’t think we should be involved in a D trade right now. Not unless it is an impact guy we can keep for more than a year. Otherwise it isn’t worth the cost in prospects.

by Daniel AC on Jul 28, 2010 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions

we have too many D prospects Daniel… Gardiner, Fowler, Sbisa, Newton, Clark, Vatanen, Schutlz, and Heed look good…. I have a feeling they won’t be busts so why not trade some assets for some help right now….

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Except nothing is really available now except Kaberle and Souray who are both OFD’s……….. This is why Bob shexcept I donould have made a move on July 1st…..

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s almost impossible to be 100% sure a guy won’t bust. A lot of things can happen. If we start trading away prospects, how do we prioritize who doesn’t get traded? Having a deep system is beneficial because it protects from injuries and provides security from making risky replacement moves.

We are on the border of having a great year, or a great 5 years. We need to manage our assets well. I’m not saying rule out every trade, but giving up a prospect for a guy we get to keep for a year, like Bieksa, isn’t a smart move. If we package for an impact guy who can stick around and be a great mentor, I’m listening. However, no one you’ve mentioned fits that mold.

by Daniel AC on Jul 28, 2010 2:23 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

is coburn a possibility? If we give Philly prospects then they get cap space

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

they have the best D in the NHL right now in my opinion… maybe they’ll want lupul back?

by Mudhippy on Jul 28, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe some of our prospects…. this is interesting…. philly will shed someone though that im sure dont know if it will be to us

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Why does everyone want to get rid of Lupul? I know he likes to party but he excels in Anaheim, heck he was on pace for over 30 goals last season, the kid belongs here!

by kvd123 on Jul 28, 2010 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

I had a post defending lupul awhile back. I was just saying that because I think it would be funny is all. In all reality, I would deal blake if anyone… money/age combo.

by Mudhippy on Jul 28, 2010 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

but no rpg line… bobby is no good with teemu…. maybe belesky and sexton can step it up

by Albert K on Jul 28, 2010 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Bobby is good with Parros. Throw him on the forth line, three scoring lines and a checking line _

also dealing someone who just had like yearlong injury problems can be hard… Right Islander fans?

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 28, 2010 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re kidding right? Ryan on the 4th line?

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Jul 28, 2010 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

No. He was really good there, he made the whole line better, I mean Parros had like 6 goals-Thats a record- And if he wants to fuck up my offseason…I want to fuck up his regular season(its only fair, and Teemu gets a pass, cuz he’s teemu.)

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 28, 2010 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya, but it just seems so wasteful. Sure Parros could score 6 goals when played with Ryan, but think of all of the goals that could be scored by a decent player.

On a side note, I’m sure how much of this holdout (so to speak) is Ryan’s fault and how much is Murray’s inability to properly negotiate.

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Jul 28, 2010 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah but if lupul can put in the same amount of goals as ryan with getz and perry, what do you do with ryan?
Murray gave him two offers? Did you see anything wrong with either one? he’s not going to get offered more than Getz( by Murray), he has to realise this.

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 28, 2010 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

You put him on the third line not the fourth line.

Also, I’m not necessarily saying that Ryan isn’t at fault. Its just hard to know whose whats really going on when you only get one side of the story.

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Jul 29, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The offers were made public and seem pretty fair to me, he wants Getzlaf like money but he’s not Getzlaf.

by kvd123 on Jul 29, 2010 6:54 AM PDT up reply actions

this is sad… Parros is shit… He’s a good guy but hockey-ability wise he sucks…. maybe he can pot 5-8 goals in a year…. Bobby on the 4th line is a waste I’m glad you’re not the coach of the Ducks Hida… HAHA LOOK WHO NEEDS TO SHUT UP NOW! I WIN

by Albert K on Jul 29, 2010 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Why do you only focus on scoring when you evaluate players? It seems like your primary focus. Parros offers a lot to the club as an energy player and as an enforcer. An enforcer who pots 5-8 goals is a very solid asset.

by Daniel AC on Jul 29, 2010 1:46 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

And his plus/minus is always respectable.

by kvd123 on Jul 29, 2010 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

keep him just for the badass mustache.

by Mudhippy on Jul 29, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

and when he scores goals, they are bad ass as hell. You always feel good about them afterwords like when he makes it through a fight with out falling down..

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 29, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

He is also a huge plus in the locker room as well. It has been said that he is well liked among the team.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 29, 2010 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

He isn’t needed on the first or second right now. He’s a goal scorer, it doesn’t matter where he ends up. he’ll still hit at least twenty goals maybe more if he keeps playing against the other teams fourth line and 3rd D pairing. is it a waste? sure, its about as bad as all your ideas, sad thing is I was joking…

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 29, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Look if you stick him on the fourth line you might as well trade him for someone who can help out on a higher line.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 29, 2010 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

We need help there? Unless Teemu doesn’t sign I like Loops and getz and Perry, as a line, and the old folks as well. Besides I wasn’t being serious, but really do you get rid of Blake? or bury Lupul in the minors to make room for Ryan?

I would think that Lupul is the odd man out, but I’m really just throwing crap out there to see what people have to say anyways….

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Jul 29, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I meant to say d line. My bad. I think with or without Teemu, Lupul if healthy could fit into the first line fairly well. The guy had a good season going for him before everything went to hell. Don’t break up the old guys line unless Paul Kariya comes back. Then Blake has to get moved. So now where does Ryan go? Well if we are paying him 5 mil or whatever it turns out to be do you really want 5 mil sitting on a third line? We have enough young guys that could fill that roll for far cheaper. Any way you cut it you will have 4-5 mil sitting on a third line whether it be Lupul, Blake, or Ryan. One has to go. Lupul will not be good trade bait because of his injury last year nor will Blake because of his age so who does that leave us to trade for the best value? Ryan. He is our best trade chip by far and we have some big needs on D. A Ryan/Wiz 2 for 1 trade could net us a pretty damn good defender.Blake or Ryan.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 30, 2010 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

got cut off

Blake or Ryan are guys that will get moved before Lupul goes anywhere in my opinion. That is unless Pronger becomes available.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 30, 2010 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

You make good points but seeing that Barstool Bob already said he’s not trading Bobby, I’m not sure what his plan is. Maybe he’s found a team for Blake and he’s just waiting for Ryan to sign.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

by Natesaduck on Jul 30, 2010 3:13 AM PDT up reply actions

There are some teams who need forwards and are loaded at D like Minnesota and Nashville. Plus their owners are cheap like Samueli so they have plenty of cap space

by Albert K on Jul 30, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Shea Webber anyone? Yeah ok that is a pipe dream but I would pull the trigger on a ryan / wiz / pics trade for him anyday. Burns would also be a great pick up out of Wild country. Too bad neither of those guys are available.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 30, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That could be Nate. Although I think Blake is more of a trade if Paul comes back for cheep. With Teemu going back and forth on coming back I could see Bob bringing back Paul to get Teemu for one last go around. As for Ryan if the right offer came around then hell yeah Bob would trade him no matter what he has said. Part of being a good GM is being flexible and doing what is best for the team. If a prime young d man became available and a team wanted Ryan as part of the trade then Bob would be a fool not to think about it. Before anyone say ‘oh but Bob is a fool,’ you don’t get to be a GM of a NHL team if you are an idiot. Sorry just doesn’t happen.

by Newport Rebel on Jul 30, 2010 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

you don’t get to be a GM of a NHL team if you are an idiot. Sorry just doesn’t happen

Two examples just off the top of my head: Winnipeg’s GM (Trading Teemu) and Kevin Lowe

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.
