Marc Staal anyone?
I was looking over nhl numbers after the rangers signed frolov and they only hav around 2 mil to go and sign staal who is restricted. we hav a weak d and enough cap space to offer 3 mil or more a yr plus alot of ice time. Living on the east coat i see this guy alot and i thnk he can rlly help us. I was rlly pissed when the oilers did this to get penner but as a ducks fan i thnk we need to do all we can to get back into the playoffs. plus i would love to screw glen sather for the bad contracts he gav to drury nd redden

As I said in my RFA post a couple of weeks ago regarding acquiring Staal, we’d need to get our third round pick back from Toronto, who has conditional ownership of it, in order to make an offer bigger than 3M. And we would have to, because the Rangers have been considering buying guys out and burying guys in the minors for a while now.

that post is here if you want to read what other people said in the comments regarding acquiring Staal

Well we got a third rounder today! Lets get this done!
by Newport Rebel on Jul 30, 2010 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions
third rounder for what? I don’t remember us giving toronto a third. Was it for Pogge? I thought Pogge’s was a 7th that could be as high as a 4th? Or am I wrong?
it has to be our pick in an offer sheet. I think Burke would be willing to trade the condition for and Islanders third rounder, but there’s no guarantee there. We would FIRST have to get that pick back, as the Rangers would match a 3M offer, and that’s the ceiling RFA offer with just a second round pick available as compensation.

Shouldn't the Islander's 3rd rounder be a higher pick than the Duck's 3rd rounder?
I mean…..the Islanders are probably going to suck. It would make sense for Toronto to want to make that swap (plus, they see less of Staal).

You never know with Burke. Maybe he’s trying to trade for some RFA right now, one that he knows Murray likes, too, and he doesn’t want an offer sheet getting in the way. No guarantees.

no that niemi has gone i think this causes a chain reaction. Philly may want to sign Niemi and to make some space they might wanna trade Coburn for picks and prospect. Which is where the Ducks come in. What do you think?
No Interest
The Flyers have no interest in Niemi…
@BroadStBull: GM Paul Holmgren told The Inquirer the #Flyers have no interest in UFA Niemi. In Leighton they trust.
I’m not sure why you keep bringing it up, but they have two fairly capable guys signed for next season who can compete and play #1. No need to go out and get another goalie when they are already really tight on the cap. I think you’re being way too wishful and hoping too much for Coburn…
i forgot how complicated offer sheets can be but this seemed like the best solution player wise. i dnt wnt to see the ducls waste cap and roster space on more boytons instrad of letting sbisa festerling and possible fowler get much needed experience. bettrer to save the space nd throw big money at shea weber if he somehow hits the open market
yeah, that’s why I brought it up in that post a couple weeks ago, but Murray hasn’t really been willing to outbid anyone lately, so it wasn’t a totally serious post. If we trade Burke for that conditional pick back, look out.

Sather has said he’ll match any offer. Staal’s asking for around $4m give or take, so it’s pretty much a lock that money is going to get moved, it’s just a question of who and how.
Rumor is Staal already turned down an offer sheet from the Sharks as well, I don’t think he really wants to go anywhere either, but that’s speculation on my part.

Do the Sharks have 4M to spend? Maybe he wants that contract that takes him exactly to UFA with no strings. Maybe that AND the money would be tough for the Rangers to match. I don’t think the Ducks are the team to outbid the Rangers, but I’m just saying that I’m sure there are viable offers out there.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Jul 30, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Allegedly he turned down 4/16m from Sather already, which would take him to UFA. It doesn’t seem that anybody is really sure if it was the year or money that was the sticking point in that deal.
As for the Sharks, I didn’t think they had to spend, but they offered Hjalmarsson 3.5, so another 500k isn’t that outrageous I suppose.

there isnt much out there for d men tht are rlly worth the cap space besides staal. as much as wiz wsnt worth the money he is gonna get we need a heavy minutes man who can kill penalties. this team assuming the bobby ryan contract is resolved is a few moves away from being very competetive. the ducks are nvr the team u wanna play in the playoffs if we could just get in
Murray doesn’t value defensive defense very much. If he did, he would’ve kept Beauchemin, a heavy minutes dman who can kill penalties. He’ll get in on someone with offensive upside and lowball some defensive defenseman. I had a post today scared to death that that defenseman will be Brendan Witt. Sadly, I really really think it will be.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Jul 30, 2010 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions
that’s not good…. wasn’t witt a minus thirty-something two years ago and he improved on it with a minus ten-something? If he signs Witt it could be worse than Calder or Boynton. Eminger wasn’t horrible but his only multi-point games where during the meaningless ones against Colorado and Edmonton. Lol Witt would be our new Boynton.
Witt’s getting bought out, so he could very well come in at 800K or something to play third line time and penalty kill time. And Carlyle remembers him when he had peaked from his solid trajectory in Washington after their Cup run. So, there’s plenty of upside to make it attractive.
However, the stats, even on a bad team in one of the toughest divisions in the NHL, make it such a bad move. His corsi stats were the second worst pretty much across the board on the Islanders and he was a minus player in the AHL last year. There are injuries and various struggles he’s dealing with, but I don’t even know if he deserve a third pairing look when someone like Matt Clark has a better chance of coming in and being an impact defenseman in a year or two after getting NHL experience this year.

*Cup finals run, excuse me, didn’t mean to overstate what that Caps team did

Staal would be sick. Imagine a defense with Staal, Fowler, Sbisa in the coiming years!!! Offer sheet would have to be big, if we went in the form of a trade we’d have to give alot, or basically give them Ryan straight up. I think it would be cheaper to juts go out and sign and Mitchell and Sutton like everyone has said all along.
I think RangerSmurf’’s notes above are pretty telling. Maybe he doesn’t want to leave, or he’s playing at a much shorter term or much much more money. It’d be a huge move as far as giving Getzlaf and Perry a quality defender to finish their current contracts with, and maybe convincing them to stay for a modest raise. Not sure if he’s ripe for the picking, though.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Jul 31, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions
i couldnt see getzlaf or perry leavin after their contrracts. they hav missed the playoffs once in their short careers and hav had more team nd playoff success than guys like ovechkin and miller. by the time their contracts are up sbisa and fowler will be regular nhl d men nd high quality nhl d men
They can each claim MUCH more than the club can pay as UFA’s. When their contracts expire, it’s almost a given that the club will have to choose between the two of them unless the next CBA drops the cap low enough to where the Ducks can still offer a competitive salary. In all likelihood, we’ll keep Getzlaf on a big raise and let Perry walk to make his money. The Ducks might be a competitor, but there will be plenty of Cup contenders who are also Cap teams and can offer a competitive salary. The Ducks will still be a cash budget team in a few years.

Wow most teams who win the cup spend to the cap floor. We need to do that again to win a Cup or it’s gonna be a while until we win another one. Maybe when we get an owner who isn’t as cheap as Samueli. But then again our attendance rate wasn’t very good last year so many there’s not much to spend? And how much will Perry and Getzlaf actually demand? I say Getzlaf around Crosby money and Perry around Backstrom money
I will assume you mean Cap ceiling, as EVERY team in the NHL must spend to the Cap floor. Yes, the Ducks won a Cup spending to the ceiling, but the ceiling that year was 44 million, and the year after it was 50 million. If last year’s profitability number was 46M and the profitability number the last year Disney was in charge was 46M, then that probably means Anaheim can make about 46-50M as a franchise. You want them to spend 59M? How? Why? Until they drop the cap again, Anaheim actually CAN’T spend to the Cap ceiling without losing money. After going to the Cup finals they were a 46M team and a couple years after winning a Cup, they’re a 46M team again. Until they’re actually a 60M+ team, I don’t know why anyone would ask them to operate at a loss.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 1, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions
but then we can’t compete with the other elite teams and then we lose more attendance sales. We still lose either way if we don’t win
The Ducks are a team that needs the Salary Cap; it helped them win a Cup. You want them to be competitive financially, then lobby for the Salary Cap to be lowered again on the next CBA. Lobbying for them to spend more money will only cause them to end up in Canada faster.

Please correct me if I’m wrong (as can’t find any cap data from last year on capgeek) but didn’t the Blackhawks only become a cap ceiling team after they won the cup (when Kane, Keith and Toews new contracts finally kicked in)?
We need more Boyntons.
As I recall, the RFA snafu last offseason put them in a tight spot. They have been losing money, though, according to a recent Puck Daddy article, but they’ll be jumping from bottom third to top third in ticket prices to address that. Their willingness to pay Brian Campbell maybe got them an audience with Marian Hossa, but if you had to pinpoint how they won the Cup, it wasn’t spending, it was drafting. Same way the Penguins won it. The Red Wings maybe win by spending, but that assessment would also undermine how well they draft and develop their players. No champion in the cap era really took the Yankees’ road to the Cup, but I didn’t want to quibble over the veracity of Albert K’s assertion.
