If you went to Conditioning Camp on Thursday...
feel free to talk about what you saw here. The boys looked pretty rusty on Tuesday, and any notes on how the second scrimmage went would be much appreciated. Hope to see you all on Saturday.
There's video of the scrimmage here: http://ducks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=534109
For some reason, I can't get that video to embed.

Quick notes off the top of my head... I forgot to take something to write notes on during the game.
I was actually impressed to really impressed. Refs didn’t call anything but goals so there was some dirty play out there that wouldn’t fly in the NHL. Sexton looked sharp. He was hustling his ass off. Kind of a mini Saku if that makes sense. Etem took a spill but the crowd loves him anyways. That guy has a chance to capture the hearts and minds of the fanbase. Hell I might be the guy passing out that Kool-Aid. He is also a speedster. Damn he is quick. Newton and Clark really impressed me. Good size to both of them and they can use it. They play smart as well. I must have been sitting in front of Newtons fam, cause boy there were people that really really really loved the guy. Smith-Pelly is a thumper. Guy likes to play physical. FOWL-er is like an awesome Christmas present that you can’t wait to use. Actually plays alot more physical d then I thought he would. Yes this guy will QB our PP at some point in the next few years. The centers all looked good. We are stacked at that position. Overall, not nearly as rusty as I would have imagined. I think the D men were trying to crush shots from the blueline because they broke a ton of sticks. I will try to make it on Saturday to give a way better report for the weekend.
Good stuff. i’ll be there Saturday, so I’ll try to cover most of what happened in a post. you can just add to that heavy lifting if you like.

Yeah I meant to take detailed notes but rushed out the door and forgot to take my notebook. My bad. All in all the guys looked good. Crush fans are going to have some great guys to watch this year.

I was there for the first period Tuesday and the whole game today (except for a few minutes when I walked outside with my grandpa as he left) but I could definitely tell the difference between the two days. Today was MUCH more physical, bigger hits, and rougher, not to mention dirtier, play. I really like Newton. He impressed me on Tuesday but he continued to impress me today. Clark was impressive too. He always seems to be in a good position to make a play. Maybe it’s coincidence that he is in the right place at the right time but i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’s there because he means to be. Palmieri was fun to watch as he flew around making plays. He had possession of the puck alot, and maybe that could be seen as him being a puck-hog but I am a big fan of puck possession so if he can control the puck and make plays then more power to him. Sexton was the best player on the ice at most times which I expect from him since he has the most experience. Etem will be very interesting to watch as he develops. He has the skill but he needs to learn to either play more physical or learn to skate defensively. He took some big hits today and I could definitely see him getting laid out alot if he doesn’t learn to keep possession of the puck while under attack. I think he needs to take some notes from Andy Mac. THAT guy knew how to hold onto the puck even when he took hits, AND he could evade hits to keep a play going. If Etem can do that he’ll be alright. Vaive looked pretty good too. That’s one bid dude out there and he uses his size well.
All in all I am very impressed with them all. It really makes me excited for the future of our team.
tonight's scrimmage
I only got to see a few minutes of the scrimmage tonight (the team I coach was on the other sheet of ice at the same time. doh…).
I got to see Sexton’s penalty shot. Real nice move he made on that one.

I thought Etem was invisible a lot of the time. I personally expected more from him.
Fowler was smooth and composed with the puck – he’s going to be fun to watch in the coming years.
All in all, I was most impressed by Palmieri and Da Costa (is that right?…I dont know who he is). Yes, you could call Palmieri a puck hog…but then again, almost everyone out there was. Rush upon rush upon rush…north/south the entire time. There were a few times, however, the white team got set up in their offensive zone…good to see passes along the blue line between Gardiner and Mitera.
Mitera was good at getting shots through as well. It seemed like most of his point shots got onto net.
Devante Smith-Pelly (sp?) needs to work on his conditioning…A LOT. He’s like a winded bull in a china shop…bulldozed the goaltender Brown at one point.
Holland showed a good flash here and there, but I thought he was somewhat invisible…kind of like Etem.
All in all, I’d like to see Fowler or Mitera make the team this year (in addition to Sbisa, of course). It would also be nice to have Palmieri in the position to be called up assuming we are in need of a plug due to injuries.
Thanks for your input, Shakenblake.
First, on Smith-Pelly, I want to emphasize to everyone that this is the offseason, and more than a few guys were giving up on pucks and winded on Tuesday. Hockey is not a sport where you can take any time off and still be fit, so like every Conditioning Camp, people are in shape to varying degrees, especially since their seasons don’t all start at the same time. I saw Smith-Pelly up close at the Draft, and not a lot of his new bulk is fat. And if you’ve seen him in game for Mississauga, he handles a hockey shift fine. Anyone who’s throwing the body more than other people in a scrimmage is going to look winded by comparison.
I don’t know about Fowler and Mitera making the team. I saw a lot of Mitera last season, and a lot of him before he hurt his knee at Michigan. He could use at least another half season in the minors to get back to where we want him. And for Fowler, I just don’t see the advantage of him joining the team. I know he really wants to, but if we play him ten games, we have to play him 82, otherwise we’re just wasting an RFA year. So he would have to dominate in the first half dozen games.
