Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The Fourth Period talks about the Ducks' offseason moves

Normally, something like this would be a fanshot.  But, The Fourth Period's offseason report of the Ducks claims that the Ducks have quietly had a very solid offseason.  With the continued talk about signing Bobby Ryan and our hopes for another veteran defender, I wonder if the article is right.  I wonder if we all haven't taken a legitimate step back and started thinking about the complete on ice picture.  Throwing that out there so we can have some thoughts on it.  I know we've thrown out some posts about line combinations and defensive pairing, but I'm really asking whether or not people think the team will be good this year?

So you’re saying we need a whole team to win? Blasphemy! ;)

I think we’ll be lucky to get an 8 seed in the playoffs. BUT here’s to hoping Hiller has a Vezina type season because he’s going to need it with the defensive unit we have now.

I smell an AC writers roundtable on predictions for next season – the non Arth-nac kind :)

Arthur and I usually do separate predictions, albeit in one article. I imagine we’d do something similar again.

I like how it predicts we’ll be distressed if he’s not there at training camp. If he holds out, he holds out. He has the leverage to do it. He doesn’t need to play a single game to be a UFA in four years.

Yeah, I’m not too worried about a Bobby Ryan holdout. I’m surprised about how positive I feel about what’s going on. It reminds me of one of those things where a person finds a way to make something work even if he/she didn’t use the best method. I don’t know if Murray made the best move he could have made, but he also didn’t make any really bad ones either. I think the Ducks will have a surprisingly good year.

We do tend to be glass half full when looking at the Ducks, maybe it is the hall of fame defensemen we got used to having….I think a younger half of our D corps that doesn’t make giant mistakes will be ok as long as our forwards are raising their arms more often than the other team. We don’t backcheck enough, and that could be the key. It will be interesting to see what effect Cap has as a consultant…I am hoping it is an on ice position, not flying around the country looking at other players or some other nonsense.

I highly doubt he will be flying around the country. I think part of the reason he retired was to stay close to family, and flying around the country defeats that purpose.

The Pronger curse lifts this season, so that should help!

It does? Didn’t Edmonton get the 1st pick 2 years after Pronger and St. Louis didnt recover for a while

The offseason isn’t over for our Ducks. But if Bobby holds out and no other moves are made to improve the team, I’m not sure this is a playoff team. There’s plenty of depth up front (even without Bobby) to be competitive, but I’m still not sure about the blueline. It will be an interesting training camp, that’s for sure.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

Nate psst… it’s important

Maybe I was naive last year, but I seriously thought we were going to have a great season. Having Lupul back, getting Koivu, Scotty and Teemu coming back, plus the fact that we took the eventual cup winning red wings to a game 7 in the playoffs may have gave me a false sense of hope. BUT, going into last season I thought we were going to be great. I ALSO thought the avalanche were going to stink again like they had the season before. Obviously I was wrong and very surprised. So do I think we are going to have a good team? Who knows?? Let’s just wait and see how it all plays out. You never know who is going to let you down or come out of nowhere and surprise you by being the best player on the ice.

I thought last year’s team was very capable of making the playoffs, we just got off to a slow start, as per usual and that combined with the Olympic year taking a toll on some of our players had a huge part in our struggles last year. I think we had a league high in players sent, including 4 that made it to the gold medal game and 3 in the bronze. I am convinced last year was a fluke, and once we got into a rhythm at the end of the year we started to play Ducks hockey again.

IMO, the AVS did a lot of that on purpose to increase thier draft position.

I thought they were on a dare to only spend six figures on goaltending.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 13, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

no we wnt be at the top of the conference but this team can be rlly competetive. with the offensive depth and hiller in goal it should balance out the weaker than usual d. if we can get the hiller from the olympics or the 09 playoffs look out nhl. wut rlly hurt us last yr was losing lupul nd the fact tht the coyotes nd avs both over acheived. the question is can they do it again if not there is 2 playoff spots up for grabs

by Joe Holub on Aug 13, 2010 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

The upgrades at defense should be good for a few more wins and that should get us into the playoffs. The Ducks were 7th in goals for last season and 21st in goals against. All they have to do is close that gap by about half a goal per game and they are back in the running.
