Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

Holy crap we're getting sutton.

From the oc register we are signing Sutton on Monday fools. WHOOOOO YOU HEARD IT HEAR FROM THE ALBERT K WHO ARTHUR HATES LOL... So this is good for us right? I mean Sutton can't skate but he has a hell of a body that can hurt people. See him knock out Leopold? Now Murray has his wits about him maybe we are set. I still like the idea of Bieksa but then no room for Fowler so it looks like it's 9 and done for the kid. Look's like I'm eating my words lol. I guess you gotta give kudos to Murray on this one for signing a tough lugnut. So the D looks like Sbisa, Lubo, Sutton, Lydman, Mikkelson, Festerling, Brookbank, and Fowler. Not bad and certainly better than what it was yesterday but I still feel we could use a Coburn or Bieksa. I guess we'll have to wait and see where Niemi and Ilya sign. I have a feeling Niemi could have a chain reaction effect on us because if Philly feels he is an upgrade over Leighton, then I'm sure they'll sign him and may give us Coburn for picks/prospects to make space. Hopefully that happens and then all Bob needs to do is re-sign Flash and trade or sign Ryan.

Ya I just put up a fanshot for this.

It’s very good, Albert K. The dude was second in the league in blocked shots and he’s just what Anaheim needs to help clear the crease.

And what’s more is that he signed for significantly less than he was making last year ($3.5 million). He’s 38 (I think) so it’s not like he’ll be getting any better, but he throws checks and is a giant. Fantastic signing!

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

close enough…. Lol when looked at the Register I was scared Murray had signed another Boynton. Though I’m sure Yankee would have liked that. Lol jk

by Albert K on Aug 2, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Barstool Bob has learned his lesson. He’s shipped out Wis, Whitney, and Eminger, and brought it Visnovsky, Lydman, and now Sutton. Much better

Holy crap I don't know why people read my crap

That should be the title to this. You are so damn negative about everything and most of your stuff makes no sense what so ever…

What the hell does that even mean? Damn… Calm down about stuff. Take two seconds and relax before you spaz out about stuff please…

by JasonF on Aug 2, 2010 4:25 PM PDT reply actions

Albert K’s a pretty young kid, so you kind of have to take him with a grain of salt. Ironically, a parent claimed they were going to block our site so that her children wouldn’t be exposed to our language, but the worst language (in terms of content and negativity) on here comes from a child.

If he’s getting on your nerves, flag him. And if he gets enough flags we’ll reconsider how he might be affecting the community, but for now, I’m willing to let this slide, mostly because it’s directed at me and I’ve made jokes before (which he appears to have taken to heart) about his cluster commenting and overt obscenity and negativity.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 2, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Is the language that bad around here? Really? Look I curse every now and then but I don’t think that it is that bad around here.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 3, 2010 12:49 AM PDT up reply actions

It isn’t. Some people just get their panties in a wad every now and then.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

by Natesaduck on Aug 3, 2010 5:11 AM PDT up reply actions

For the record, I don’t have a problem with the language as much as I do with Albert just spitting something out instead of taking the time to think about something and then make a post. I get tired of seeing several comments (comments to his own comments) in a row from the same guy. I understand it happens as you can forget to add something you want to say, but it doesn’t need to happen that much. Add to that the fact that there isn’t always a logical way of thinking about his posts and I get sick of it.

Just my $0.02 on that.

And I said it in another (older) FanPost I believe, but the Flyers have no interest in Niemi according to Twitter. They are fine with who they have between the pipes. There doesn’t seem to be any market really for Niemi right now. And no teams aside from NJ (obviously) and possibly LA who are waiting on the Kovalchuk from everything that I see. I’m not sure what would lead you (Albert) to think that those two signings would cause a chain reaction. I guess it’s maybe more hopefully and very wishful of thinking for Coburn than anything.

Just my other $0.02.

by JasonF on Aug 3, 2010 6:14 AM PDT up reply actions

LA has two goalies already so they are out. NJ I see getting Kovy so they will budget everything else. Wow maybe we should think about picking him up for cheep. He got what 2 mil in arb? Thats fairly low for a goalie who just won the cup.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 3, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe my reply wasn’t as clear as I wanted. I meant that LA might be the only team other than NJ waiting on Kovy (not Niemi). If the NHL rejects the contract and he somehow becomes an UFA again, LA might be to his liking because they had some fairly solid offers on the table. However, I don’t think their offers were at all similar to the ones given by NJ where all the money was front loaded.

And I believe Niemi got 2.75 mil in arb. Doesn’t mean he’s going to get paid that much as an UFA, but it’s possible. Though I don’t think us picking him up would be essential. I think Hiller needs to be a firm #1 and I don’t think 2+ mil is acceptable to pay a backup nor do I think Niemi is wanting to ride the pine and get 20-30 games max a year..

by JasonF on Aug 3, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

If Niemi wants a starting job..his best bet is to wait out the Khabi the Drunken Goalie trial and go to Edmonton, who won’t go a whole season with Deslaurier and Dubnyk again.

Washington is an option, but they seem content with the two kids.

Otherwise, he’s kinda SOL. Bad year to be a FA goalie with a billion of them on the market.

by George E. Ays on Aug 3, 2010 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah and the worst part was his arb hearing wasn’t til a month after FA started. It was a very thin market to begin with, but being a month behind the gunshot doesn’t help him in the least bit. I feel pretty bad for the guy. I think he’s a decent goalie. He benefited from a strong defense in front of him in Chicago, but he’s got the quality of a starter in the NHL.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him either in Edmonton as you stated, or Montreal. Montreal is not making any progress with Price right now it seems so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him land there. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see him start the season without a team in the hopes a team has their #1 go down with an injury. No sure when the last time, if ever, a cup winning goalie started the next season without a team. Tough spot for the guy.

by JasonF on Aug 3, 2010 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but there are still alot of unanswered questions about Jonas. Can his back make it though a 82 game season? Can he overcome the back to back games curse that he seems to have? Curtis was a good to great backup at the end of last season. He really shocked me how well he did in those games but if we have the chance to pick up a solid goalie who just won the cup at around 2 mil, then I think it is something to think about. At worst if Hiller steps up and puts the questions to rest then we could have a good trade chip for a team like in a position like Edmonton was this year. Like I said if and only if we can get Niemi at around 2 then we should think about it. If he was on the open market sooner then there wouldn’t even a chance to land him but now that he is a FA so late in the offseason it may be a perfect storm and a chance for us to get lucky.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 4, 2010 12:13 AM PDT up reply actions

As much as I rag on Hiller for consistency issues throughout the season, I don’t see a reason to bring in Niemi. He may have won the cup, but he has yet to convince me that he is any more consistent than Hiller. Personally, I’m fine with Hiller and McBackup for now.

Although an extra Finn might push Selanne over the edge, I have a feeling that Niemi is bound for Europe.

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Aug 4, 2010 12:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I doubt we’d get him for 2 million, isn’t that what the Hawks had offered him?

by kvd123 on Aug 4, 2010 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

It was 2.something. I didn’t really take a look at it that much. The Hawks turned it down. Not Niemi. Cap problems come back to bite them in the ass.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 4, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

No I mean before arbitration, there was a report somewhere that said the Hawks wanted to sign him at around 2 million.

Yeah that sounds right…I think Niemi wanted around 3 per season…

Thus arbitration…

I, too, don’t like cluster commenting. And he’s been warned. Unfortunately, SBN doesn’t provide an edit button, so I don’t discourage double commenting. I do it myself. But he has been warned. Don’t worry. I’ve made it clear that he’s not to hog the screen with his cluster comments.

Thing is, he’s a kid. I dont’ know how much message board time he’s had, so maybe he doesn’t know message board etiquette about replying to yourself and hogging the screen.

Strange to see JasonF complaining about this. It looks like he’s a member of Battle of California. If you want to talk about language and nonsensical stuff, you can’t really go wrong with that blog. Maybe Albert K would be better off posting there?

Or maybe it’s just an expectation thing. Go to Anaheim Calling for more reliable information. Go to Battle of California for crazy talk.

by Wooster11 on Aug 3, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I am a “member” of BoC but I rarely go there. I go there sometimes when there is an article that someone like Earl wrote up with a cartoon after I find it linked on this blog. But I prefer to come here, because as you said, the information is more reliable. I think I’ve been to BoC maybe twice in the last year or so.

If I do remember correctly, AC wasn’t up when I first started reading SB Nation, so I was on BoC. Then AC came up and I dropped BoC pretty much all together.

by JasonF on Aug 3, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know about reliable. We don’t want to be a replacement news source or anything. I’m just not wild on giving a “blogger’s
perspective” to every piece of news so I try to write deadpan reports in Teletype format. Our blog format was originally just me and Daniel talking hockey, and while we try to be informative, we’ve brought in Jen and Robby to give different perspectives and lure in people who might find Daniel and I (appropriately) alenating and severe

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 3, 2010 8:49 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Informative. That’s a good way of putting it. Every time I read something by one of you four, I walk away feeling like I gained something from it. It’s a nice change compared to some places where you either get something completely off the wall or you get the same exact story you’ve read at 10 different places already.

Keep up the good work.

Shea Weber….Never gonna happen though…..

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Aug 4, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I’ve been saying this for a few threads now, but I thought Arthur was crazy when he said Brooks Orpik. However, I think it’s a trade that could be great for everybody. Pittsburgh still would have Michalek, Martin, Letang and Goligoski as a top 4; that’s pretty good. They’d also have a 30-goal scorer to put with Crosby, which means they might have picked up a 45-goal scorer.

We get a fantastic stay at home guy who can hit, and shut down a top line. Imagine Orpik and Sutton on a PK unit together. Orpik is young and he just signed a new contract. We get 4 years of a player, which is what we lose in Ryan. It’s something that’s really been stuck in my head.

Marc Staal might be a good alternative too.

by Daniel AC on Aug 4, 2010 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I forgot about Staal, I think Sather would trade him if it meant bringing in someone who could score more than 20 goals who isn’t Gaborik. And every one knows Staal brothers are good luck charms…

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Aug 4, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

There was a guy from blueshirt banter on a thread, maybe somewhere in this one, who had some interesting things to say about Staal. I can’t remember exactly what though. I think it was along the lines of why Staal wasn’t leaving NY. I think Bobby Ryan could drum up a little interest though.

by Daniel AC on Aug 4, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was about Staal turning down an offer sheet from the Sharks, and the commenter was theorizing that Staal wants to stay with the Rangers…

But yes Ryan would help the rangers so much up front Sather would definitely need to take a pause and think about it…

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Aug 4, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that was me

There’s alot of rumors flying around. Some people are saying he wants to eventually play with his brothers (and that Jared traded to Carolina was the first step). It’s also being said that Orr (Staal’s agent) is asking $5m for Staal, which is lunacy. I love Staal, but he’s not getting $5m in an RFA year with no PP production.

I wouldn’t say no to Ryan for Staal, 30+ goal guys don’t grow on trees, but it’d leave a pretty big gaping hole in our defense, and it’s a little late in the FA period to get something to plug it up.

Yeah It would fix your goal scoring problem…Sort of. But it opens up a problem on the back end…

Staal would help us more than Ryan would..This is dependant upon Lupul being healthy though…

Thanks for commenting again Ranger Smurf. I was in the middle of something and was only following the immediate conversation. You’d be weak on the back end? Wasn’t Eminger enough?!

Ok, sarcasm aside, Think you have anything to move that could help you get an eventual salary dump defender from Vancouver or Calgary? I agree, you’d be a little too weak on the back end, but if you can get a hold of a Regehr or a Bieksa to ease the pain for a little while, then this trade probably has more legs.

by Daniel AC on Aug 5, 2010 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Wasn’t Eminger enough?!

Heh, I know you guys hate him, but I think he’ll be quite servicable as a 3rd pair guy or 7th defenseman for us. I tend to believe the advanced stats more than Charmin and sandpaper analysis though, I could be pleasantly disappointed by him.

Think you have anything to move that could help you get an eventual salary dump defender from Vancouver or Calgary?

The only guy besides Redden (who would have to be moved to make room for Ryan) would be Rozsival, which just creates another hole in the defense. That’s the kicker of it…lose Staal, lose Redden, maybe Rozsival too, and the only defenseman we have left are Girardi (25), MDZ (20) and Gilroy (26), who have a whopping 6 years of experience between them.

Our offense would be greatly improved with Ryan/Frolov/Gaborik, but we’d probably just start losing games 4-3 and instead of 2-1 all the time. That’s the main reason I’ve been against the idea of Ryan for Staal, even though I know we’d have to jump on it if it existed.

Still, just as Murray’s said he’ll match anything and won’t move Ryan, Sather has said the same thing about Staal.

Every time a GM says he won’t move a guy, I immediately think that dude is on the block. I see your point. I was just trying to find a way to make it work. I know there was talk a while back about burying Redden in the minors to make space for a few moves. I wonder if Sather will ever actually do it.

When I proposed the Calgary/Vancouver idea, I had forgotten about the Redden albatross. That contract is HUGE. I was thinking more like prospects and picks. Those teams are looking to ditch salary, not pick it up. Which of course means they can’t help out as much with that Redden contract.

Thanks for ruining my fantasy where the Ducks ditch Bobby Ryan and get a good defender in return. Sigh, This Bobby Ryan thing is never going to end.

by Daniel AC on Aug 5, 2010 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, we’re in as much cap hell as anyone, thanks to Drury/Rozsival/Redden. At least the first two come off the books after 2011-2012.

We were doing the math yesterday at BSB, unless Staal signs for less than about $2.3m, Redden has to get demoted to get us under the cap. If he does manage to sign for that little (fat chance), we could dump only White and get it in

Everyone is understandably skeptical that he’ll actually demote Redden, but the math says it almost has to happen, unless another move takes place.

There’s other quality RFAs not signed still, Stewart (COL), Bergfors (ATL), Neal (DAL) among others. It’s still a bit too early to panic. For now.

Not panicking, more like tired of waiting. Too bad Lowe isn’t in Edmonton still, he made crazy decisions all the time. Might have given you good value for Redden.

I’ve been game for that since July 1st. Too bad Murray still refuses to trade him.

by yankeeken on Aug 4, 2010 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe that’s the real reason no one’s put out an offer sheet. Maybe GM’s figure that Murray’s looking for someone to write the contract for him, so he can blame that person for having to pay Ryan more than Getzlaf, but GM’s know that if they don’t give him the out, he’ll have to trade the kid. Not too tinfoil.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 4, 2010 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions
