Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Hypothetically (Read Eklund) Speaking

The news cycle is dead.  As far as I'm concerned, we've moved on to the point where we can start discussing hypotheticals.  For ideas on off-the-wall hypotheticals, I went to hockeybuzz, where Eklund says this week is 'a big week for Ryan (and by proxy Kariya).'

Note three things here:  First, Eklund said he wouldn't be surprised if Kariya was a 'today or tomorrow' thing two weeks ago.  Second, he doesn't say Bobby will receive a contract offer, just that it will be a 'big week' for Bobby.  Third, this is Eklund.

Thoughts?  Predicitons?

And finally, to give this thread the proper non sequitur atmosphere commensurate with an Eklund lede, here is a selection from the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game Soundtrack, which releases tomorrow.  "Just Like in The Movies" by chiptune power pop rockers, Anamanaguchi.

Bobby signs. Kariya signs. Randy rolls 3 scoring lines for next season!

Lupul (if healthy)/Belesky – Getzlaf – Perry
Kariya – Koivu – Selanne
Blake – Ryan – Bodie/Belesky
Voros – Chipchura/Marchant – Parros

Ok, now for my realistic prediction:
Ryan signs, but not this week. Barstool Bob is done with the offseason “makeover”.

I’m a pessimist.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

pretty much..my only hockey salvation is playing nhl 09 with my new version of the ducks…sutton is extremly slow and big(i gave him number 2)…im starting to get worried…I have him paired with brrokbank

lydman with vish..

and uncle fester and mikallson paired together cuz im too lazy to generate fowler and sbisa..but i will since there isnt any hockey news to absorb…the question is how good do i make fowler?

wasn’t there a petition to buy you NHL 10? Someone should get you 11, then you can play Be A Pro as Fowler and get that guy into the NHL lickety-split.

its for 11…so im in wait mode..but like u said..i need some type of hockey fix

im sure hes gonna sign soon..fuck it sign him for 3..and make the hard descsion on who to sign when the big 3 contracts are up…youll still get 3 good years at least out of him…i dunno..im not a very patient person..good thing im not a GM or the president of the untied states

if Bobby’s filing for arbitration after the third year, I think it’s a given we sign Getzlaf. That’s really why Bobby wants the three year deal. He knows that, in our situation, it’s a guaranteed early exit, if not to UFA then to another team who will pay him for that fourth year before UFA. Shrewd move, and I don’t think Murray has any counter leverage. So, if they announce a three, I’d anticipate a Bobby trade before or during the third year of the contract.

The downside to that scenario is that you wouldn’t be getting maximum trade value for Ryan in his final contract year. So why not sign him to the three year deal then move him next year? You would be getting higher value than you would in his final year, especially if the market for scoring forwards was as scarce as this offseason. Hopefully by that time some of the younger guys like Sexton, Deschamps, Palmieri, and McMillan could step up into the top 6.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

Oh, it’s all downside if he wants to go to arbitration in the offseason before his last RFA year, but I guess the advantage of keeping him for at least two full years out of the three is that you give him the chance to explode into a Richard Trophy caliber player or something. If he doesn’t, you move him with a clear conscience, but before he takes you to arbitration and you get almost nothing for him.

well, yeah. I think that’s the way it usually plays out. Those things can conceivably come together. If Bobby becomes truly great, and the presumably lowered Salary Cap under the new CBA throws us an assist, maybe we can split Perry’s money between Bobby and Getzlaf, and then still find a way to pay some of the younger defensemen.

I just don’t want to be overly optimistic with a guy who wants to file for arbitration in the last year of his RFA. That gives him tremendous freedom. Even if the arbitration doesn’t go his way, because of the new Salary Cap or because we renew Getzlaf for an affordable raise before his contract is up, Ryan can still just take the arbitration number for that last year then walk away. We’d be stuck trading him as an expiring contract.

The best NHL was 08 when they kept teemu and scottie on it and STILL added Schneider and Bertuzzi along with out that stupid Andy Mac trade. That team was the shit. My getzlaf is at 97 now and i still keep the Penner Getz Perry line together. Selanne retired after the second season in. I have yet to buy another NHL game since that one.

I'm still naively hoping

for some kind of great long-term deal. But I do think 3 years/$14 M is what we’re looking at.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the week something finally happened. Their really starting to run out of time to mess around and they need to figure out once and for all if this is going to happen or not.

Better to be pleasantly surprised than sorely disappointed. I think He’ll get his 3/15 M though. With Lupul being out for the first month of the season, and our history of slow starts, I think Bobby gets exactly the deal he wants.
