Bobby says he doesn't want a trade
Interesting news from Eric Stephens over at the OC Register Ducks Blog. He got a little time with Bobby Ryan after a workout, and had Bobby answer a few questions.

WThis is encouraging
the cynic in me says this could just be more of saying the right thing but if that’s all it is, he’s doing a damn good job of it. Just get it done.

I'm tempted to de-front page this.
His agent said the same thing to Craig Custance a month ago.
I doesn’t get interesting until the last line.
"I’ll figure something out before I get to a holdout [scenario]," he said. "But if NHL teams are starting camps, I’ll be on the ice somewhere. Hopefully here."I don’t know what you can “figure out” before a holdout scenario. I’ve never heard of someone figuring out how to play without a contract, especially since he then says he’ll be on the ice if training camp starts. He’s basically saying ’I’m not asking for a trade until training camp is about to start.’ Now THAT’S the lede.

He’s not asking for a trade, he’s demanding one.
Rice is great when you're hungry and you want 2000 of something.
I was a little confused when he said
If it comes to a situation where there’s heads butting, then I guess it would be best.
Haven’t they been butting heads all summer?
I can’t lie, this is getting interesting for me. I wonder if Murray is really working the phones, and how badly Bobby wants a trade.
CoulI read that completely different
could it be that this process hasn’t been as contentious as we’ve all made it out to be. After all, bobby seems reasonably confident that a deal will get done. I remember a while ago one of the oc ref writers wrote something to the effect of “folks, this is gonna get done.” Maybe this process hasn’t been a bad as we imagine?

there’s really no other way to read, “If NHL teams are starting training camps, I’ll be on the ice somewhere. Hopefully here.” He sounds like Apollo Creed a the end of Rocky, all weary and broken but with the most resolve he can muster, “Ain’t gon’ be no holdout.” Ding. Ding.
I left a question for Stephens on the comments, since it sounds like he buried the lede on this one, but it sounds like he’s saying ’I’m not asking for a trade . . . YET.’ It never works out for him when he talks to the media; he should really stop it.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 24, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions
Bobby’s gone to the media twice now and tried to play the victim. He makes it sound like the Ducks are being unreasonable, and that he plays absolutely no role in contract negotiations. He really sounds like a kid who doesn’t know how to get out of trouble other than to say it’s not his fault.
sounds like a kid who doesn’t know how to get out of trouble other than to say it’s not his fault.
hey now. let’s not throw around the snitch word. Stepehns responded that it sounded more like he was just saying that he wanted to be in camp somewhere. The word choice is obviously a lot stronger, though.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 24, 2010 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not saying he’s a snitch. I’m saying he literally sounds like a kid who breaks a vase or something, and doesn’t know what to say other than he didn’t do it, or “it’s not my fault, I just tripped”.
Yeah, that’s called a snitch, or a snitch in training. You’re officially too suburban for the music you listen to. Someone needs to pull your Bone Thugs Card for this.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 24, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions
No, a snitch is someone who deliberately throws somebody else into punishment. Snitch in training, I’ll buy, but not a straight snitch. There are degrees to these things, and he hasn’t gone full snitch. Right now, he’s just some dude who won’t accept responsibility for his actions, like people who always blame the bus for their tardiness or the dog for eating their homework.
See, this is why you everyone around you gets a fail. Snitching is not taking your lumps, regardless of how that responsibility manifests itself. A real man says he made a mistake and takes his punishment. If you tripped and fell, you made the mistake of not looking where you were going or not being careful. Saying, I tripped, it isn’t my fault, is snitching on your sneakers or snitching on the ground.
It’s honestly everyone around you’s fault that you haven’t learned this yet, Daniel. I say that as your friend. I say that as your spiritual advisor. If you can’t say you made a mistake, that you’re wrong, accept that designation, then your balls haven’t descended. #RealTalk

Stephens response to the question
seems to indicate that he doesn’t think bobby is angling for a trade.
by PhantomPretender on Aug 24, 2010 9:46 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
I didn’t see it as him angling. It sounded more like threatening. Like, if this continues into camp, I won’t keep waiting, basically. I don’t see how any RFA can guarantee he’ll figure something out or that he’ll be on the ice.
by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 24, 2010 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions
Would there be harm in punting
By just going with a one year deal? Conceivably both sides would have a better idea of where they stand at that point and it would get him in camp.
by PhantomPretender on Aug 24, 2010 10:01 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
The new CBA makes it a risk. The Ducks could lose valuable RFA years, or Bobby could lose money. It’s not ideal for either party, I suppose. Although, I was initially on that boat when I offered him that 2 yr./9M deal that everyone seemed to hate.
Huh? The 2 year deal is what would be risky. One year still gets you one more offseason. CBA expires September 2012.

Really not sure on what to make out on this one. I agree, he’s making it seem like he doesn’t want a trade YET. At the same time, he is saying he wants to stay here, but I’m not sure if he’s just playing nice guy. I just want something to happen (rather see him in a ducks jersey), and I REALLY want this season to start. I don’t care for football or Nascar or whatever, just want to start watching some damn hockey already.
Who says Bobby will actually be at training camp?
After all this back and forth I am at the point where I will believe it when I see it.

I am good with a sign and trade. At this point that may be our best option.

We’re not a good fit for a lot of guys in their prime, especially not UFA’s. So I, personally, don’t mind Bobby looking out for Bobby at this point in his career. I mean, the guy doesn’t know how the CBA will shake out, and he probably thought he’d be a UFA a year or two sooner as a 2nd overall pick. It sucks that we might not be able to get seven years out of him, but if that’s the way it looks, I think a responsible GM has to move him for equivalent playing time out of another good RFA or a veteran/RFA combo. For a 2nd overall pick, I want four years worth of games from NHL caliber players as the basement value in a trade.

thats a good point….i suppose thats why your not hearing willie mitchell meeting with the ducks..but like 4 other teams
just off my espn txt message…no 2nd go around for aaron ward and the ducks..hes retiring
my lasting memory of him was sitting with sleek and rudy near the penalty box and ward unusually red cheeks going into the penalty box..only to serve 2 minutes and get out..and commit a penalty right away and go back in..it was hilarious…or at least it was being plastered

I honestly think that we’ll eventually sign him and it’ll be like the MLB draft where they sign at the last minute. I bet he signs the day before training camp begins or one or two days into training camp. When it gets close to training camp, i see both sides start to speed the process along because I don’t think either side wants him to miss training camp.
Ryan said he’s wondered why all the parties can’t sit down in a room "and get it together in one day" but added that, "It is what it is. I understand that this is a process. Both sides are trying to do what’s right for them."
I found this the most surprising line of the whole article. Have they really not all sat down in a room together and tried to figure this out? I read the article as Ryan wanting something to get done, and if he believes that having them all sit down would help, why not do that? Perhaps I’m just too naive.
You want people to be able to argue your case. I’d say it’s the equivalent of a union negotiation at the blue collar level. You don’t want your boss saying, ‘hey, remember when I covered for your mistake that almost shut us down, etc.’ If you deserve a raise, you want to get it and you want someone who can intelligently argue that point and won’t be swayed by personal arguments. Some people just aren’t good at negotiating, so sometimes it’s better to just put two people who are good at negotiating in a room. He’s not a veteran, and he hasn’t made his money yet, so now’s probably not the time to take the agent out of the equation.
Plus, it’s usually a bad idea to try and take the agent out of the equation. Terrell Owens signed that Eagles contract against his agent and the NFLPA’s advice. The money was backloaded and the frontloaded guaranteed money was actually below the average for an NFL WR at the time. So he was forced into renegotiating and the NFLPA wasn’t thrilled to help him.

I completely agree with everything you said, and that Owens situation is interesting, I did not know that. However, I did not mean that the agents should be taken out of the equation. As a law student, I can definitely appreciate the value of adequate representation. What I meant to convey is that I think that a round-table discussion with Ryan, management, agents, and all other relevant personnel might not be all that bad. Perhaps this more informal approach with truly all parties involved could make some headway, especially since Ryan does seem to want to get a deal done, and both parties seem frustrated with the current state of negotiations. However, there are the obvious drawbacks that you mentioned of Ryan probably not being the best negotiator for himself, and could (most likely will) say some things that would make his agent cringe. Also, the possibility that management might say some things that Ryan would not like to hear could worsen the arguably tenuous relationship between the parties. Yet, assuming that cooler heads prevailed, I think that an approach where all parties agree to meet in person to get a deal done could be beneficial. At the very least both sides should be able to know for sure whether or not a deal could actually be reached, and whether or not Murray should start pursuing the trade route.
As a law student
Yeah, lawyer here, and I was trying my best not to sound like I was defending my profession. :) You’ll find when you practice that it’s better to meet without the parties. Actually, even before you practice if you take an alternative dispute resolution class. Bargaining position is important, and people get emotional, even in contract negotiations. You don’t want anyone overreacting and becoming less receptive to compromise. Bobby’s the client, though, and if he wants to go in there he’s allowed.
