Stephens Says DiPenta Signed to Crunch But Will Tryout
Eric Stephens tweets that the Ducks have signed defenseman Joe DiPenta to an AHL contract, but they will also be inviting him as a pro tryout for camp. Last year, the Ducks, also facing camp with a questionable blueline, gave spots to veterans like Jassen Cullimore (on a tryout) and Steve McCarthy (on a one-year contract that was ultimately traded).
Lindsay Kramer catches up with him here.

Bobby Ryan agrees.
Had a great time with the guys. Happy Joe dipenta has a place to play. just celebrated over a great meal. No one deserves it more.

yeah, I saw that, but wasn’t sure if he signed with the ECHL or something. Didn’t occur to me the Ducks would sign him and do the tryout. Plus, I guess ECHL time isn’t a reason to celebrate over a “great meal.” Not unless it’s the day before you report and you know you’ll be eating cheese sandwich for six months. Real.

If you missed the link at the bottom of the fanshot, Kramer from the Crunch blog talks to him here.

This is awesome. I wonder why they didn’t just sign him to a two-way deal though…
There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.
and guarantee him money? that was the problem with mccarthy last year. they signed him to a real contract then had to call around to move him. yeesh.

My mistake. I was under the impression that he didn’t have to clear waivers if he was on a two-way deal.
I love how you always make me look stupid

aw, it wasn’t meant to make you look stupid. I was just venting my anger that Murray would actually sign McCarthy to more than a tryout. The guy was in the KHL! I know he drafted him, but did he owe him money from a poker game, too? How does that guy fill a training camp spot?
