***Ducks Sign Palmieri***
THE TELETYPE:
Anaheim announced today that they have signed Kyle Palmieri to a three year entry level deal. The 5'10" right winger was the second of the Ducks' two first round picks in the 2009 Draft. UPDATE: Capgeek reports the contract as 900K per season NHL, 67.5K per season AHL, 90K per season signing bonus and 175K per season in signing bonuses.
The 19 year-old completed his freshman season at Notre Dame last year, but after an off-ice incident that led to him and teammate Riley Sheahan being arrested, many speculated he might come to the pros early. At Conditioning Camp last month, Palmieri confirmed to J.P. Hoornstra that the situation was mostly resolved and sounded as if he planned to return to South Bend. However, by signing a contract with the Ducks, Palmieri is now ineligible for NCAA play.
ARTHUR:
There was some confusion about this in the comments, so let me clarify, Palmieri CAN play in the AHL this year. He is considered an NCAA player and is not bound by the agreement between the CHL and NHL.

He doesn’t turn 20 until February so he’ll ineligible to play in AHL this coming season.
We need more Boyntons.
Actually, AHL eligibility is 18. I think you guys are thinking of AHL eligibility for CHL players. Palmieri is not CHL player, but the Ducks can move him there for one year if they want. But if they want him to play AHL, he can.

Haha. It’s convoluted, and NCAA and European players are considered to be in “free development” systems where the players are older but the talent is not at the level of the CHL. I disagree, but when you talk about bringing up young kids these days, it’s usually CHL guys that everyone’s in love with, so it’s understandable that people would assume that applies to everyone

He looked as good as Newton at Cond Camp, and he claimed he’d been inactive like everyone else, so I really think that speaks to his general conditioning, and the dude is ripped. There are big guys in the ccha, but he didn’t have a breakout season against them, so maybe some AHL time to get acclimated makes sense, but if he looks great down there he should get more than a cup of coffee. It’s up to Murray how he wants to handle hi development. We’ve got a lot of expensive multi-year forwards

Is this coming about, because he was suspended from his college team and the Ducks don’t want him to lose a year?
I did not read that he was suspended. The LA daily news article I linked is the last he addressed his troubles and he implied to Hoornstra that the legal and school troubles were settled with only possible supplemental discipline from his coach remaining. If you have a new article, please link it. I may have missed something.
