Be a Coach

So I know the offseason isn't over, but I never can help but view what the team would look like on the ice today. There's still some work to do (ie Teemu, Ryan, Kariya?, defense) but if the season started tomorrow what would the line-up look like?

Star-divide

I'd like to hear what you guys think so go ahead and put your line-ups together in the comments.

Rules are simple:

1. You can only use players that are currently signed

2. 12 forwards and 6 defensemen

Here's what I've got:

Lupul-Getzlaf-Perry

Blake-Koivu-Lupul

Belesky-Chipchura-Bodie

Carter-Marchant-Parros

Visnovsky-Lydman

Sbisa-Sutton

Mikkelsson-Brookbank

Ryan will be on the Ducks

The process may be a but more drawn out than we would like, but he will be on the Ducks next year.

ANGELS . . . DUCKS . . . GOLDEN BEARS

by AndyHogan14 on Aug 5, 2010 4:16 AM PDT reply actions

Yes, that’s whay Murray and Ryan both want but the purpose of this exercise is just to see where we’re at as of now. And right now, Ryan isn’t signed so if the season were to start today he wouldn’t be in the line-up.

It’s just a fun little activity to do in the offseason when nothing else in the league is going on.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

by Natesaduck on Aug 5, 2010 4:54 AM PDT up reply actions

You’ve got Lupul double shifting? That’s impressive. =P

Anyways, here is what I have…

Lupul-Getzlaf-Perry
Blake-Koivu-Sexton
Belesky-Chipchura-Bodie
Voros-Marchant-Parros

Visnovsky-Lydman
Sbisa-Sutton
Mikkelsson-Brookbank
Syvret

Hiller
McElhinney

Trade Carter? Mine is very similar to yours. That offense leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion outside the top line. Missing Teemu and Bobby makes it look decent at best.

by JasonF on Aug 5, 2010 6:06 AM PDT reply actions

teemu and ryan will be back

by Albert K on Aug 5, 2010 6:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Oops! My mistake. I’d replace Lupul for Sexton on the second line.

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

by Natesaduck on Aug 5, 2010 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Dont lie. You want Jen to lose the bet. Admit it.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 5, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

If Kariya signs we may have to trade both Lupul and Blake.

by Albert K on Aug 5, 2010 6:11 AM PDT reply actions

No we wouldn’t. Bobby Ryan would just have to get used to being the most expensive 3rd line player in the league for a couple years. He’s leaving in 4 years anyway, so I guess pissing him off doesn’t matter.

Lupul-Getzlaf-Perry
Beleseky-Koivu-Blake
Carter-Chipchura-Sexton
Voros-Marchant-Parros

Ideally, I’d like Bonino to fit in somewhere, but he needs to stay in the middle for now. That means AHL time.

Visnovsky-Sutton
Sbisa-Lydman
Brookbank-Newton

I trust Arthur’s eye for defensive talent. I think Newton might surprise people out of camp.

by Daniel AC on Aug 5, 2010 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Screw that. Get rid of bobby for something if were gonna lose him anyway

by Albert K on Aug 5, 2010 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

I like Bobby but If he doesn’t want to be here then lets ship him off for some D

by Nava22 on Aug 5, 2010 12:06 PM PDT reply actions

I agree on Bobby as well. The key is to get value though, and who knows what’s really out there. It’s interesting how much speculating we do. You can’t 100% know what is going on. We try to make good hypotheses, but in the end very few people actually know what Murray is planning right now. I just hope he gets something good.

by Daniel AC on Aug 5, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I hate to be fanboy guy

but we’re all ascribing motives to Bobby that we have no idea of knowing are true. Yeah, he wants UFA. Doesn’t everyone when they’re young? I don’t think we can just make the leap of “well let’s get him the fuck out of town cuz he doesn’t want to be here.”

by PhantomPretender on Aug 5, 2010 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he wants UFA. Doesn’t everyone when they’re young?

I don’t :p

There's nothing to see here. And nothing gazes back at me.

by Natesaduck on Aug 5, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry, Bobby has reached the point of being more problematic than anything. If there isn’t going to be a resolution on this, it’s better he just get shipped out. It’s not like the guy is irreplaceable.

by Daniel AC on Aug 5, 2010 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

ThThat's not the point

the point is that you and others are inferring attitudes that we really can’t know. I’m just curious why you’re so quick to have kariya’s back and yet you’re ready to ship out bobby on a moments notice.

by PhantomPretender on Aug 5, 2010 9:22 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

1) We have an abundance of capable forwards.

2) We have a fairly weak defense that could use an upgrade.

3) The UFA market for defensemen has pretty much dried up.

4) Bobby Ryan is our best tradeable asset.

The above reasons are all valid arguments for why we should ship Ryan out of here.

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Aug 5, 2010 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I'I'm not talking about merit

I’m talking about attitude. There seems to be this sentiment from pro kariya people that bobby has done something egregious. Granted, I wasn’t around for paul. But even arthur has said its basically the same situation. So why the bobby hate?

by PhantomPretender on Aug 5, 2010 10:08 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I’m not sure there is as much Bobby hate as you seem to imply. Yes there are some people with attitudes like this:

I like Bobby but If he doesn’t want to be here then lets ship him off for some D

But for the most part, I think peoples attitudes are more like this:

I like Bobby but If he doesn’t want to be here then lets ship him off for some D

Are the two attitudes all that different? Not really. I think for the most part, people are just tired of waiting. Waiting for our D to be fixed, waiting for Bobby to sign, etc… It seems like this whole offseason has been nothing, but waiting. Also, with talks staled as long as they have been it seems like there are only two logical conclusions to be made. Either Bobby doesn’t want to return or Murray is an incompetent idiot who is just waiting to match an offer sheet. And I think at this point, you could make an argument for both cases.

Also, it should be noted that not everyone that is pissed at Ryan is in favor of a Kariya return. There are plenty of Duck fans that still despise Kariya.

We need more Boyntons.

by yankeeken on Aug 5, 2010 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I don’t have anything against Bobby but we need D like nobodies buisiness… He’s the most tradable, as Ranger smurf was saying 30 goal scorers don’t grow on trees, so we could get a good price for him. after that it falls off. Blake or Lupul(who isn’t 100% confirmed healthy so who knows if anyone would take time) So between Blake and Ryan I’d honestly see Ryan go just for the potential return.

I rec’d that shit.

by Steven Hida on Aug 5, 2010 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I can only speak for myself so here goes. I don’t “hate” Bobby. He is actually one of my favorite players and when I saw him put one past Hiller when I was at the games, I damn near went crazy. I lost my voice for a few days after that game. With that being said last year we did not make the playoffs for a few reasons but in my opinion one of the major one’s was the D. Right now there are not a ton of trade chips that we could part with and still be ok. Would I rather keep Ryan and ship off Blake or Lupul before? Let’s just say good thing Pronger is not on the block. Ok kidding aside Lupul or Blake won’t get us what we need to fix the D problem. Ryan will. As much as he is one of my favorites, he is our best option for a trade. It is kind of a perfect storm that is going against Bobby. Also the fact that we are stacked at forwards doesn’t help his case. As for why people are so willing to bring Paul back. Part of me thinks that Anaheim wants Paul to get Teemu. I think if Teemu decided to hang them up the "bring back Paul" chants would die down fairly quick. Would we welcome him back in order to get Teemu? Hell yes. I know you are a new member to the Ducks family but let me tell you those guys were insane on the same line. The Kariya, Rucchin, and Selanne line is my favorite line in franchise history. Those guys were amazing. I think that Teemu, Paul, and Saku could be a really damn good line next year. Have these guys lost a step? Sure but those three on a line can still be damn effective, they haven’t lost that much of a step, and the line shouldn’t cost more than 5 to 7 million. We are a budget team and sometimes you have to look at it as bang for your buck not best players available. In this case we are still getting some really good guys as well. Right now shipping Bobby off is the best short term fix and long term fix (if we pick up a stellar young d man) for the club. Yeah it will suck to see Bobby wearing someone else’s sweater but Bob Murray has to do what is best for the club.

Watch this to see what Paul and Teemu used to do to the other teams D

O man that video made me want them back so much…… COME ON MURRAY, DO IT.

by kvd123 on Aug 6, 2010 7:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah those two were just amazing. They did a lot to establish the Ducks. I mean we were still the FNG in the NHL at that time. They really were the pinnacle of a shift from what I called our big French Canadian thug bruisers to a skilled Ducks team. Don’t get me wrong I loved the fact that our Canadians could kick the shit out of your Canadians any day of the week. But as for scoring goals, I swear some of those guys never knew that the stick was for scoring goals instead of starting fights.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 6, 2010 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the great responses

I think part of what’s so hard for me to understand is the fact that the cap can force you to have to trade your young controllable assets. I still hope they can figure out a way to keep him as I legitimately think he’s a franchise talent.

by PhantomPretender on Aug 6, 2010 8:21 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Again, I don’t HATE Bobby. I guess I just don’t have the connection with him that other Ducks fans do. I grew up on Kariya. I have to welcome him back. Also, these are two different situations. Bobby isn’t the Prodigal Son yet. Right now, he’s just holding everything up. It’s his right to do so, but it’s also my right to get mad at him for it. More importantly, the club isn’t asking for Bobby Ryan’s best years. There’s a difference between UFA at 28 and UFA at 31. If the Ducks tried to sell him on a 4 year 8 million, I’d sympathize more. The guy is getting like 300,000 less than he apparently wants. Yes, that’s about 1.2 million dollars he’s leaving on the table, but he’s going to make that up in the next deal when he leaves Anaheim for 6 million/year.

If the Ducks keep him, I won’t be upset about it. I’d even call it a good move, but probably not as good as trading him :)

In the end, I feel like you’re asking me to have faith in Bobby, but I just don’t see why he deserves that faith. He’s been around for 2 years, and he’s done nothing to convince me that he’s being mistreated by the organization. It’s not as much money as he wants, but it wasn’t a lowball offer either. If bobby made his case, I’d listen. The only side of the story I hear is Murray. I don’t know why Bobby should be given the benefit of the doubt when almost all signs point to him being unwilling to compromise. I suppose it’s possible that his camp came back to Murray with a 4 year deal at 4.75 per, and Murray straight rejected it. But I think Murray would have jumped at any number below 5, because it helps him save face as a negotiator. That means Bobby has pretty much said, 4 years, 5 million or nothing. I don’t think he’s worth that, in this era.

by Daniel AC on Aug 6, 2010 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

well bobby has scored more goals in his first 2 season than perry or getzlaf

by Albert K on Aug 6, 2010 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

What’s your point? Is that the only measure of the quality of a player?

by Daniel AC on Aug 6, 2010 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

No but he can use that in negotiations with Murray. Pointing that he may become the better player overall

by Albert K on Aug 6, 2010 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Again, that’s only if you compare the two solely on the goal scoring category. Bobby Ryan might score more goals than Perry or Getzlaf, but is that the only thing we should evaluate when paying him?

by Daniel AC on Aug 6, 2010 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Bobby may have put goals in the net but Kariya put the Ducks on the map. Comparing the two is not really that fair. The Ducks are a completely different franchise today then when Paul played for us. It has been said that Paul and Teemu put Anaheim on the map and Scotty when he arrived gave it credibility. Paul and Teemu signaled a fundamental change in the way we played hockey in Anaheim. When we first took flight in 93, we were a team of blood thirsty bruisers. When Paul and Teemu started with the Ducks, fans in Anaheim started to appreciate the new brand of hockey that in my opinion continues through to this day. We were used to seeing our guys basically kick the shit out of opposing teams physically but not that much in a goal scoring sense. Now we love our skilled guys such as Getzy, Perry, and Ryan but that would have never happened as early as it did without the dynamic duo. I guess what I am trying to say is Paul and Teemu helped build the franchise. Ryan now can thrive in an environment that those two helped create. Ryan is a stellar player but there will always be a lot of love for the guys who built the Ducks.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 6, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s just the way hockey works. There are plenty of guys throughout the Ducks history that I thought "damn I want him here until he retires," but then get traded. As in all sports though, time moves on and new blood comes in. It is very rare in the modern era that a guy will spend his entire career in one city.

by Newport Rebel on Aug 6, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think the choice is between Bobby and Kariya. The best I can figure, it’s between Bobby and Getzlaf. The terms of keeping Bobby are pretty clear: we get four years at around what Getzlaf makes, maybe even more that what Getzlaf makes if Murray’s waiting for an offer sheet to save him. The terms of shipping Bobby off could be considerably brighter for the franchise than keeping him. Maybe we’d get more than four years, maybe we get a cheaper player that makes it easier (financially) to retain Getzlaf and Perry. I don’t know about acquiring players that can help us now. But there is a lot of talent on the horizon, and there’s the prospect of renewing Getzlaf and hopefully Perry. Ryan looks like he might complicate that, much more so than plugging in a few small short term contracts.

by Arthur from Anaheim Calling on Aug 7, 2010 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

First off trade Blake and Lupul for Chris Friggin Pronger and/or some draft picks. I’ll assume they get traded and we get some nice draft picks and we sign Selanne and Kariya:

Ryan, Getzlaf, Perry
Kariya, Koivu, Selanne
Beleskey, Marchant, Voros
Bodie, Chipchura, Parros

Visnovsky, Sutton
Lydman, Sbisa
Brookbank, Mikkelson or Newton

Fowler or one of the two tough guy prospects we have will fill in for Sutton when he gets hurt.

Hiller
McEllhiney

Can’t wait for the year to start already!

TRIFECTA three scoring lines

Niemi (why not)

Cause we’re a budget team and can’t afford him

True that….Niemi would keep HIller in teh game, and a great backup, better than one that is good sometimes…no offense but we shelled him when he was with the Flames…and we were stinkin at that point
