Your Friendly Tuesday Links Roundup: The It's OK to Vent Your Rage About DSP's Broken Foot, Even After a Win Edition
He won't get to skate with Canada's Redeem Team (their collapse during the third period of last year's gold medal game is one of the most brutal things that I've ever witnessed in amateur hockey). But more importantly, his broken left foot will likely keep him out of the Ducks lineup for the entire month of January. Come one, come all. Vent your rage in the comments section of this thread.
At least we won last night. Wait...really?

It'd be silly for any team to trade for Teemu
Without looking ahead towards the future. We would benefit from it no matter what.

Interesting.
Wasn’t expecting that perspective! I think that a Teemu trade would benefit a Cup contender (a team that is poised to go far in the playoffs, but needs an elite, veteran winger to take them to the top). The Jets are the only team that I’d feel comfortable trading with, but I don’t think that any of their defensemen could be the first-pairing shutdown man that we need. And Teemu’s absence from our second line would be disastrous.

alternatively a player like selanne could turn a fringe playoff team into a contender. Almost any team could use a point per game scorer with wheels. Not condoning a trade on a personal note as i believe he should retire a duck, but from an organisational perspective, we could only benefit from it. He will be gone from our second line next year regardless, and we arent likely to be anywhere near challenging for a playoff spot so it makes sense to move him. However, what would teams be willing to give up for 2-3months of a player? i wouldnt have thought a No1 shutdown defender would even be in the discussion. Possibly a player like Enstrom? Although id prefer to get evander kane..i think he’d look good in a ducks uniform

I geared the discussion around shutdown defenders because I feel like that’s our biggest organization need at this point. I don’t think that the Jets really have that player, though. I like Kane, but he’s one of their franchise players, and I don’t imagine that they’d part with him. I also like Buff (the Hawks fans over at Second City Hockey never gave him his due), but he’s more of an offensive defenseman. He could also play on the wing (I love his versatility).

i understand that. but i think its unlikely that teemu by himself would net a #1 shutdown guy. They seem to be rare in todays nhl and likely the team that has one is getting to the playoffs based off that players play. Thus no chance they’d give that up.
If we were to trade him, i think at best your looking at developmental players and picks. And i agree that the jets dont have that player, hence why i say an enstrom might be a more realistic target, if a trade to winnipeg is on the cards.
But id prefer teemu retires a duck

Enstrom isn’t going anywhere. He really holds that D together. You’d never think it, but he’s a key piece of that D. Buff is a good scorer, and Bogosian is surprisingly versatile. More importantly, Winnipeg isn’t going to move a proven NHL player to get Selanne. It wouldn’t help them make the playoffs.
Exactly
Winnepeg is probably the only place Selanne would CHOOSE to go to, but they don’t have excess of anything and therefore don’t have anything to trade.

I don’t know about ANYTHING. They certainly don’t have any NHL players they are going to part with, and I think we can’t ship Selanne off for picks. I guess a second round pick from a team that might not make the playoffs isn’t a bad asset for a team that has been digging up gems in the second round for a couple of season. I can see the argument for trading him there if he’s the piece in a package that gets us a better player, i.e. Bobby and Selanne plus for maybe Kane and Bogosian. But, I agree that I just don’t see the overall merit of a deal. It’s not worth it to ship him off just to get some extra pick or prospect. Teemu is worth more than that.
I wouldn’t send Teemu to Winnipeg for nothing (and I would also like for him to retire a Duck). But I would seriously consider a Bobby/Teemu for Kane/Bogosian deal. Kane and Bogosian are going to be in the league for a long time, and Kane is a more than adequate replacement for Bobby.

It would cost us more than just Bobby and Teemu to get those guys, but it’s a good place to start. We might have to pitch in a young or established defender as well…
Not Cam, please! He’s struggled this season, but I still think he’s going to be a franchise player down the road. Imagine him at 27…woah. Brookbank and Frenchie are expendable, though.

Ill be honest. I would rather be trade partners with a team that has something we really want than settle for the “something close” I feel like Boogosian had a contract dispute and held out as long as he could to see what Schenn got. I don’t know much about him but I didn’t think he was considered the be that good or hasn’t lived up to expectations.
by DavidBL on Dec 28, 2011 6:41 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
The arguement id make, is that what we want, we’re not getting in a teemu trade. be it that gun 3rd line centre, in which case i think we over pay (unless your counting a jordan staal as a real 3rd line centre), or a shut down D, in which case we have to give up more, and that the team the has one probably wont give him up.
It might sounds stupid, but the kings need scoring and have a number of D…they might be a good trade partner IF you had to move selanne.
by BennyLightning on Dec 28, 2011 9:27 PM PST up reply actions
That’s fine till you start adding other assets into the mix for players that don’t necessarily fill our needs. Selanne will fetch at least a 1st round pick. I base that on Fisher getting that for Ottowa last spring. Granted he had contract time left but Selanne is a much bigger impact player.
by DavidBL on Dec 28, 2011 10:47 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
No, Selanne will not get you a first round pick. He’s retiring, and he’s 41. He’s also not known for being a playoff performer. He has a .711 P/G average in the playoffs, compared to a 1.06 P/G average in the regular season. That’s a full third of a point difference. That’s a huge disparity.
The only teams that MIGHT offer a first round will all be picking 25 or later, if we’re lucky. Most likely, it’ll be a serious contender for the President’s trophy who might consider the first rounder almost negligible. Overall, I just can’t see an organization doing it. Selanne for a first is just a bad trade. He’s had his best years in Anaheim, and his worst playoff performances with teams that aren’t Anaheim. I’m sorry, but offering a first round pick, or worse more, for Teemu Selanne, who is about to retire, is the type of move that costs a GM his job. The only way it is worth it is if you think he’s the piece for the Cup, and even then it’s a long gamble. More importantly, I don’t see Murray being bold enough to ask for a first rounder for Selanne.
I’m sorry but I disagree here. Point per game players are not usually available at trade deadline. That drives his price up. 25 is still better then 50 which is likely where a 2nd rounder would be if its a bubble team going after him. It. Wont be a bottom 10 team so the pick wont be between 30-40. He also brings veteran leadership and cup experiance. Even with .7 pts per game.
by DavidBL on Dec 29, 2011 10:15 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
I just don’t see this happening. Who would give up a first for Selanne? That’s more than mortgaging the future, it’s saying you don’t care about it.
by Daniel AC on Dec 29, 2011 12:31 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I sort of agree with daniel. While not all first rounders are created equal, i just dont see a team giving one up for teemu. While, there are no doubt some playoff teams which have enough young talent to afford to…boston maybe, i cant see their GM’s pulling the trigger on this.
by BennyLightning on Dec 29, 2011 12:32 PM PST up reply actions
you, know after thinking about it. SJ cant really afford to have another playoff bust, and with Havlats fragile body the only real speed they have, maybe they would go back to the well and see if a Selanne can tip them over the edge….They have some youngish players mixed with the vets, and a successful playoff campaign now is probably more important to their fan base than what a single player may be able to do for them in the future
by BennyLightning on Dec 29, 2011 12:40 PM PST up reply actions
If I recall, Selanne wasn’t a fan of his time in SJ, and Sharks fans don’t like him either. I don’t think anyone likes that deal. Not to mention, Ducks fans might show up at the Ponda Center with pitchforks and torches.
looking at it from a purely organisational standpoint.
Like ive said i think no trade is better….for my immortal soul

I totally forgot
Perry got his 50th goal on a hat trick against the Sharks. Fitting. Why can’t we play the Sharks every night?
We seem to have their number, lol. Maybe it’s Stanley Cup Envy.
