Your Friendly Friday Links Roundup: The Occupy Anaheim Edition
Well, it's what Canucks fans did last night.
On a more positive note, I'm glad that Bruce Boudreau isn't afraid to stand up to our veterans. You all probably noticed this, but Ryan Getzlaf was taken off the first power-play unit at the beginning of the third period. #occupythefirstpowerplayunit?
On to the links!
- Defenseman Mark Fraser has been assigned to the Crunch on a conditioning loan. He is still on the Ducks' 23-man roster. [Anaheim Ducks]
- Bruce Boudreau's presence is impacting the Ducks' offense - specifically, the offense of borderline players like Matt Beleskey. [Anaheim Ducks]
- Replacing Devante Smith-Pelly is 'no easy task" for Team Canada. [The Hockey Writers]
- The "Gretzky Effect" will propel Emerson Etem to the NHL. [IIHF.com]
- Nick Bonino is trying to capitalize upon his NHL opportunity. [OC Register]
- The Ducks have lacked "consistency" this season. You're preaching to the choir, Fox Sports West. [Fox Sports West]
- Canada's 2005 World Juniors team might be the "best team ever." Remember when you were good, Ryan Getzlaf? [Edmonton Journal]
- "We definitely got outcompeted" vs Vancouver last night. - Jonas Hiller [CBS Sports]
- The folks at Arctic Ice Hockey are searching for the NHL's 'most interesting name.' 1990s edition. [Arctic Ice Hockey]
- Broad Street Hockey has the complete soundtrack for Episodes 1 and 2 of HBO 24/7 Flyers-Rangers. [Broad Street Hockey]
- Wither Pernell Karl? [Backhand Shelf]
Ed. Duck Notes:
- Per Eric Stephens, the Twins were split up in practice, and the world didn't implode. Line rushes change to Nicklas Hagman - Ryan Getzlaf - Teemu Selanne and Bobby Ryan - Saku Koivu - Corey Perry. No word on if Koivu will be back tomorrow. I like this move. Perry was even more explosive last year without Getz. Same goes for Ryan.
- Also from Stephens, Boudreau believes that Jason Blake could be back in a game or two - and the world returns to normal?
- "Um, maybe" was Boudreau's response on if Dan Ellis would start tomorrow.
- Kyle Palmieri was sent back to Syracuse so he could play high minutes once again.
- USA! ALL THE WAY...back home. The Czech's rocked the kids today 5-2 in World Juniors. Team America needed a point to stay in medal contention. Yeah, that didn't happen. Playing Canada tomorrow and all the US can be is spoilers, but not much. Canada is killing it, even without DSP.

The way I understand it
If Denmark beats Finland, then the USA could still be in medal contention (not likely to happen). We really could have used Justin Faulk and Seth Jones (who is eligible for the next couple of WJHCs). My inner Yale homer wanted to see Kenny Agostino on the roster, too.
Sooo.....
Finland demolished Denmark, and the USA is in the relegation round. Embarrassing. Hopefully we can beat Latvia!

Per Eric Stephens, the Twins were split up in practice, and the world didn’t implode. Line rushes change to Nicklas Hagman – Ryan Getzlaf – Teemu Selanne and Bobby Ryan – Saku Koivu – Corey Perry.
Don’t know, i don’t like those pairings. it forces Getzlaf out of his cyclegame. but maybe it works, so who knows
Perry was even more explosive last year without Getz. Same goes for Ryan.
that’s just a false statement. once again, that’s absolutely not true. Perrys Harttrophy surge began with the return of Getzlaf, Ryans points went up dramatically with Getzlaf in the lineup.
Disagree
I really like these pairings and think they could help everyone involved. Forcing Getzlaf out of his cyclegame is a great idea.
1) This is not a Randy Carlyle team anymore. BB doesn’t like the cycle and honestly it hasn’t worked pretty much all season. Its best to get them out of it this season rather than next. Also I think the idea that Getzlaf is lazy is partly a result of the cycle, and giving him a different type of offense could help with his image and his game.
2) It gives everyone more motivation to play better and get results. “Wanna play with your friends? Start winning games”. I also think matching veterans with younger guys is something we should have done long ago. Koivu and Selanne seem to be the most natural leaders on this team and deal with adversity the best. Putting them with Getzlaf and Perry could teach them better how to be leaders and balance out the lines better. Finally Getzlaf is a pure playmaker and Selanne is a pure finisher. They work very well on the PP and Selanne is probably the only guy on the team who “out ranks” Getzlaf. At the very least it gives me a reason to watch the next game.
Firmly agree with you Kevin
This is something I think could have been done long ago. Ryan and Perry were connecting last year even before Getzlaf got back in the lineup. And I agree that busting up the inseparable twins is a great way to break old habits, and reinforce the message that we’re playing a fifferent brand of hockey. It will also give BB a clearer idea of who wants to stay, based on the enthusiasm they bring to the new pairings.
While I’m anxious to get Koivu back, I almost wish he’d take a couple of more games off, just to see how Bonino could work with Ryan and Perry.
Agree with Kevin and JLL
I’ve said this before, but I like that BB isn’t afraid to stand up to Getzlaf. I’ve always suspected that he was in over his head (or even intimidated by) Ovechkin and Semin in Washington, and that he would have trouble standing up to our stars. Doesn’t seem to be the case.

Actually Freakle, if Im not mistaken, Perrys surge started when Getz got hurt and was out. He just continued once Getz came back, Getz being out gave him a boost.

Agreed. Ryan and Perry came on when Getzlaf went out. When he came back it just exploded more. I’m not gunna sit here and say Getzlaf is a bad player. He is our best center and when you put a better center in-between two hot players you’re going to get even better results, and that is exelactly what we
