Let's Do The Time Warp: Revisiting Game 2 of the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals

KRISTEN:

Dearest Anaheim Calling readers,

You may remember me from my Game 1 Ducks-Predators gameday post during the new contributor tryouts, or my historical recap of Game 1 of the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals back in May. New contributor tryouts have been cancelled (sadness!), but we are on the cusp of crowning a new Stanley Cup champion, and I wanted to revisit the good old days of Pronger and Niedermayer.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007. The Ponda Center. Game 2 of the 2007 SCF was surprisingly similar to Game 1 (and Game 2 and Game 5) of the current SCF. It was an ugly, defensive battle, and both goaltenders - Jean-Sebastien Giguere and a hot-tempered gentleman named Ray Emery - played well. JSG earned the shutout, but Anaheim outshot Ottawa 31-16, and many have argued that this was Emery's best game of the series. Emery displayed Tim Thomas heroics before TT was even a "thing."

But back to the game. We only put 5 SOG during the penalty-free third period, but Samuel Pahlsson  pulled a Nathan Horton-during-Game 7-of the Eastern Conference Finals and scored the the lone, clutch (and unassisted) goal at 14:16. The goal was the result of a turnover from Dany Heatley, a winger on Ottawa's top line (and one of the individuals who should have been generating offense for Ottawa).

The nitty gritty:

- Pahlsson, Rob Niedermayer, and JSG were the Three Stars of the Game (in that order).

- The refs were Bill McCreary and Brad Watson, and the linesmen were Scott Driscoll and Jay Sharrers

- The television ratings for this series were poor, but the Ponda Center was packed to the brim (17,258 attended).

- Four was the number of the evening. Both teams had 4 penalties and power plays, and both teams failed to convert on the power play.

- Eight was the other number of the evening. Both teams had 8 penalty minutes.

- We also had more hits (36-28) and won more faceoffs (30-21) than Ottawa.

(For more info.)

We won it all back in 2007. I hope that the B's can win it tomorrow, but maybe you guys are indifferent. For Horton!

Hope the B’s win, but only because I think they are the underdogs heading back to Vancouver. Nevertheless, they still have a good chance at winning the Cup!

I have a feeling

that the Canucks will probably grind out a close, ugly win tonight. But I’m still rooting for Boston.
