Random Thoughts on Chris Drury
I didn't want to devote a full post to my musings on this topic and elected to go for a short talk on the fanpost section. In case you missed it, the Rangers are strongly considering buying out the last year of Chris Drury's deal. Drury has been injury prone and has lost a lot of his scoring punch, but he was a great leader for the U.S. Hockey team that took Silver at the last Winter Games. He's still a good option as a depth center, Penalty Killer and might be the type of defensive forward we need. If he can be had for less than 2 million, I'd be interested.

If that happens then that shit better be on you tube. As long as we don’t lose Timmy then I am ok with it.

Todd Marchant is gone no matter what. He will probably retire. Drury isn’t signing with us for cheap. He might give a contender or a team he really wants to play for a discounted one year incentive laden deal in an attempt to improve his stock and try to get a big deal the following year. That team isn’t us though.
We can always use more Germans and Swiss around here.

Anyone know what type of player Dupius is? He may be an UFA we should look at, give him a 3 year 5.25 or 6 mill deal
He’s a high energy, defensive forward. Think Alex Burrows type, but to a lesser extent. He had a 3 year 4.2 million deal, and considering he played up to and little bit better than that contract that price seems about right. I think the pens would like to keep him, but considering they had Craig Adams, Maxim Talbot, Tyler Kennedy, and Dupius to resign and each is looking to play a similar role on the team. So the Ducks could look to pick up who ever slips through the cracks. I’d like to see Talbot if Marchant leaves just because he brings a similar skill set, but is bigger and can forecheck better.
I’m not sure I’d spend any real money on a guy who scored once in 24 games on a team that, lets face it, has some real good scoring talent. I don’t know if the rest of his game really makes up for that.
We just paid Todd Marchant 1.25 to play 82 games and score less than 10 points. I think we can find the same money for a guy who does a lot of the same work, scores at a slightly higher pace, and is a proven leader in the locker room.
And took a bit of heat for his lack of production all year even when making 1.25 while Drury was making 7 mil. Marchant was a leader for us as well. Just not sure its worth the risk with other options out there, especially at a longer term fix
I agree in that Drury makes more sense as a Marchant replacement, rather than someone to fill our 3rd line two-way forward needs. Still think there are a ton of options to be had through UFA’s to fill either need, but I do hope some of our younger guys will get a shot at playing time too. DSP, Etem, Sexton (if he returns), Palmari, and others should all be getting decent looks if not next year then in the near future.
The thing about some of those players is that I tend to see their skill sets lean toward top 6 roles once developed and I haven’t seen too much development from our 3rd line. Those players have had the most success when some of our top 6 guys go down and they get to play up there. Sexton when he played with Koivu and Ryan, Baleskey when he filled in on that top line. Bonino when he stepped in to center the second line when Getzlaf went down 2 years ago. At least as far as production goes. I feel Carlyle just doesn’t trust them enough for them to really get a chance on a 3rd line. Which leads me to believe that maybe some of those assets are better used to upgrade our Defense or 2 way forwards. That’s how I view it anyway. I don’t see Bonino or Palmeiri developing into that 2way player that I think McMillan has made himself into. I honestly don’t know enough about DSP or Etem to make an opinion but from what I heard they’re scorers as well.
And yes, I do understand that they will have more success on the top two lines by the mere fact that the players they are playing with are better.
DSP is actually projected as more of a checking forward. Although, I think that’s a mistake because his shot is dynamic. I don’t know. Everyone said Drury was a poor choice for the Olympic team, and he played great at the Games. I have to think a guy coming off a buy out, with his heart and skillset, is a good pick up. Are there better options? Sure. But they’ll also be a little harder to get. I think Drury is a move that is very prototypical of Murray. It’s one I could accept, even if it’s not the best one, as long as the price stays a little low.
I think Drury would be a GREAT pick up IF we are paying him 1-2 million a year. But I think someone might be able to out bid us there and think that he can play a 2nd line center role or something. I think he would be perfect to replace Marchant, as he is clutch, a natural leader, and great on the PK. But he is not our answer for the 3rd line woes, as I feel that someone else on the market is better suited for those minutes.
Hello gents
I’m popping over from Blueshirt Banter
I think Drury, at $1.5-2 million might be a good answer for your checking center, so long as he’s healthy. The Ducks don’t seem to have any problems scoring, but if it is that your top-6 guys are being drained, Drury would be a perfect fit.
I actually brought up a few days ago on the Banter the prospect of trading Wolski to the Ducks as a one year rental. You guys do need depth below the Blake- Koivu-Selanne line. How do you think the fans would react to bringing in Wolski and say Christensen (again) for more scoring depth. They would seem like an upgrade over Belesky, Sexton, and Palmieri
I’d rather let our young guys try to figure out their scoring. Koivu and Selanne probably only have one more year here, which means we need to get our young guys ready to be second line players. Honestly, we need to free up money too. Don’t think we’d be too interested in Wolski.
