Smells like VICTORY!

JEN:

Finally, the time has arrived to begin recruiting players for our Fantasy Leagues. This year is going to be different. Aside from the four leagues being offered, we're going to run every-other-week posts recapping the previous two weeks action. Do well and Nate writes a glowing review of your genius roster moves. Do poorly and Nate will remind everyone why you're a fan and not a GM. The winner of each league will receive some signed stuff from the Jen-cave, including this lovely NHL Awards Media Advisory signed by one, Bobby Ryan. (Did you hear that? It was Robby squealing.)

Before the Commish take the podium, please take a look at our sister SBN site, Fantasy Hockey Scouts, for all your draft needs. Not knowing my fantasy record, the guys over there asked me to comment on the outlook for the Ducks, fantasy and otherwise, for the upcoming season. You can take a look at my interview here. FHS also offers an extremely comprehensive draft guide that I've seen a preview of. I will NOT be sharing my copy with all of you because it would void my competitive advantage. If you'd like to take a look for yourself, go here. Best of luck, to everyone. May the best woman win :)

MR. COMMISSIONER:

Greetings once again my fellow fantasy fanatics!

It is with great excitement that I am pleased to announce the start of this season's official Anaheim Calling Fantasy Hockey League! I have created four separate leagues for everyone to join. Each league was molded to reflect the feedback you generously provided me. There is room for 12 players in each league. We'll be holding the live drafts throughout Sunday, September 25th. Each draft will be exactly an hour and fifteen minutes apart to facilitate those of you that wish to join more than one league.

If you aren't available to be present at the draft, don't fret. Yahoo! has compiled a list of players of whom they think you should draft. The great thing about this is that you can edit their order to suit your preferences (i.e. Getzlaf 1st overall, or what have you). Although to avoid any bad picks, I would advise you to be present at the draft. That, and it's much more fun to have playful banter with everyone in the league!

After the jump are the four leagues, their descriptions, and the login info needed to get yourself added to the league.  Click on the title of the league you want to join and it will take you to the Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey homepage. On the left-hand side of the page, there is a box that says "Accept Invite". Type in the ID number and password provided, and click "Join Your League". If your ID and password are accepted, you will be taken through the process of officially registering yourself for the league. Should a particular league fill up quickly, we can create additional leagues to meet demand. Any questions, email Jen at AnaheimCalling [at] gmail [dot] com.

Star-divide

H2H Keeper

ID#: 29263 Password:Teemu

Live Draft: 9/25 @ 4:45 p.m.

Finally, a keeper league for all those that requested it. For now it's a default league, so if you would like to make changes with the roster size or scoring type, I can oblige the majority. I've yet to arrange the rules and regulations for keeping and drafting keepers. For those of you that choose to join the league, send me feedback ASAP (either in the comments, on the Yahoo! message boards, or drop Jen an email) so we can implement changes before the season gets going.

H2H Default

ID# is 29294 Password: Stache

Live Draft: 9/25 @ 6:00 p.m.

Normal head-to-head league for those of you who prefer a less competitive atmosphere. For those of you playing fantasy hockey for the first time, this is a great way to learn what you're doing.

Roto Default

ID# 29300 Password: RPG

Live Draft: 9/25 7:15 p.m.

Rotisserie league is also set to a default to accommodate all beginners and for the rest of you mellow folk out there. Another great way to learn what fantasy hockey is all about.

H2H Utility

The ID# is 29285 and the Password is Jonas

Live Draft: 9/25 @ 8:45 p.m.

This Head-to-Head league is modified for expansion in both the roster size and scoring model. I'm especially excited about this league because it is tailored for those who enjoy a more competitive atmosphere. The roster is expanded to 27 slots (including Utility and Forward) so draft smart...Jen.

I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you to help me make improvements on these leagues so we can all have a fun-filled fantasy season!

Thanks

I am in. May I ask why there s no roto keeper format? I mean h2h might be fun if you know you opponents, but it is ultimately a flawed format in terms of choosing the best players over a season as it includes a strong(er than with roto) element of luck as to who u are facing when and how your players do precisely that week… Anyways I know h2h is more popular but maybe we can find keeper roto friends? :-)

by DennisKE on Sep 10, 2011 2:47 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Also maybe we can make the keeper league quite deep (ie more players per team) so one can include prospects? :-)

by DennisKE on Sep 10, 2011 2:49 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Thanks for the input

I really struggled with both of those ideas while making the leagues. As you mentioned, this format seems to be the more popular one. However, if I get enough people that want to join a roto keeper with expanded rosters, I’ll have no problem creating another league for that.

Keeper is full = roto?

As the keeper league us full maybe it makes sense to open a roto keeper and see how many sign up? Preferably wit large teams (maybe 20 players) and toi as a stat category added? Just a thought though.

It looks like there's a chance for that

I just expanded the keeper league to 20, so let’s see how that fills up first.

How many teams in the keeper league?

Theoretacilly- you can go pretty deep in a keeper league….

If there’s enough interest, instead of opening another league, how about just opening up more teams if there’s interest?

I’m certainly interested.

For what it’s worth – some sort of priorty should have been given to the owners of last season, IMHO.

My apologies

I didn’t get much of a response from people that were in leagues last year who wanted to play in the same league for this year. As such, I didn’t think it would be a good idea for 3 or 4 of us to be the only ones active in the league.

Really important change - Draft as auction

Honestly I think it would be a very good idea to set the draft type to auction for all leagues. We do not have any last season standings, so a standard draft means that someone arbitrarily get s the number 1 pick. If we set it to auction everyone has the same chances to get any player. I have made some very good experiences with this. I really think for fantasy hockey that start s up (i.e., is not a legacy keeper league with previous year standings) this is the one best option. We should change that.

by DennisKE on Sep 11, 2011 4:46 AM PDT reply actions

AUCTION DRAFT

If the leagues are expereinced enough, I second the motion to do an auction draft.

For those that haven’t done an auction draft before here’s the basics:

Owner 1 nominates a player to the board for $1. Then, all owners are able to bid in increments of a minimum of $1 thereafter. But… say Owner 2 comes in and bids next at $20. Then Owner 3 comes in and bids $25, and so on. Bids continue until the highest bid is submitted where no owners bid thereafter. The owner with the highest bid for the player wins the auction, and we move on to next player.

The Keeper League may work in this format as I would assume that the more expereince players are in this league. Not sure if the other leagues would want this as it would require more experience. This isn’t really for the casual player.

by red8ball on Sep 11, 2011 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

One big conern:

How would an auction draft even work if one or more managers isn’t around for the draft?Wouldn’t that mean that any managers that aren’t present for the auction lose out on all of the good players?

We need more Boyntons.
Fire Carlye & Murray!

by yankeeken on Sep 11, 2011 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

haha yea, pretty much the case

I’m not sure how an online auction draft works, if they just award the missing guy players or not based on highest ranking, I haven’t done an online auction draft before, but a couple years back we had an offline auction draft for fantasy football, one guy didn’t show up and he just backed out of the league because he had to pick from the free agents list (you know your in trouble when Chad Pennington is your best player)

For this very reason

I am obligated against implementing an auction draft. With 20 players in the keeper league, the chances aren’t very good that everyone will be present at the draft :[

Guys: auction has nothing to do with experience or draft attendance

Anyone who ever used ebay can take part in an auction draft. If you arent able to participate, yahoo has prepared a pre-draft ranking with values AND you are able to srt the maximum bid and see the average winningbid from all yahoo drafts. It s real easy. And the computer bids fine even if you dont do a thing. I got Perry, weber, stamkos, hiller and price in a draft i did not take part in. There really is abolutely no reason for concern. Really… Let s change this, it is so much fairer. At least for the keeper league(s)….

by DennisKE on Sep 11, 2011 10:31 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Let me just make my point for an auction a bit more clear

Okay, so just to make sure that we are all speaking about the same thing, let me briefly go into detail as to how these Yahoo auction drafts typically go:

Just as explained above by red8ball, every GM will (turn by turn) nominate a player. Then all the GMs can bid an amount of dollars (everyone has 200 as a starting point) on the player. The one who has the highest bid (you can re-bid, etc) wins the player. As a GM you have all the info you need: you can see how much each GM can still bid, how much he can still bid max for one player, etc (as each player will be at least 1 dollar, so at the end you need at least 1 dollar per open roster spot). This is by far the fairest way to allot players like Crosby, Stamkos or Perry in a keeper league than just by chance of the first 3 pics or so (and I did not say those three would go 1-3).

Now: What about those GMs who cannot take part in the draft. They are basically in the same spot as those that miss out on the standard draft. They can pre-rank their players for nomination and set a max bid value (which the PC will NOT immediately bid, but will bid by increments according to the other bids) and you can see what the expected value (according to stats preview by yahoo) and the average auction value of each player is. This should give you a good chance to easily get your players even if you are not present.

What happens in reality: Let s say there is a draft where we have 2/3 of GMs present and 1/3 bid by computers. Then those who are present will have an advantage as they could go even higher than any pre-set bid for a certain player. This, however is more or less the same advantage as seeing (in a standard draft) that the next four picks before your next pick at computer pics. You can easily assume the computer will always take the 4 highest ranked picks by yahoo more or less and can bid accordingly. In the auction draft your trade off (when present) will be, whether you should really bid 65 on Crosby or keep the 65 and wear the other peoples’ balances down so you can do the “stealing” in the lower rounds. It really is not so much of a disadvantage (or I d say it is just the same as being offline in a standard draft when Vokoun is still available, but the PC algorythm says “choose center next” and you end up with Kyle Turris). As I said the yahoo pc bidding is pretty good in terms of me getting Weber, Price, Hiller, Stamkos and Perry (and other useful players) in a draft that I missed. As everyone has 200 bucks to spend, players who are present cannot snatch every good player from a PC-bidder….

So: I am 100% for auction at least in keeper formats and yes, it is more fun if all GMs are present, but it is no problem at all if you are not present…

by DennisKE on Sep 11, 2011 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

So what happens when you run out of the 200, and your roster isn’t full?

by DavidBL on Sep 12, 2011 1:46 AM PDT up reply actions

That cant happen as the pc limits ur budget so u have min 1 usd per open position left

by DennisKE on Sep 12, 2011 5:11 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I think this is sort of irrelevent

because of the way Yahoo! has set up the format. It’s not like you can choose your keeper after you draft them. I have to assign each team their keepers. Unfortunately, the best way I know of doing that is by coordinating my own draft manually. It’s really inconvenient, but I don’t see any other way of doing it.

I’m open to other suggestions though

Joined the H2H Keeper and Default

Default because it’s the one I’ve been playing for the past four years, and Keeper because it’s bigger and I thought I’d give it a try. It’s really cool though that I finally found a place to play Fantasy Hockey in, you’d think living in Minnesota it would be pretty easy, I guess not…

Made it into Expanded Keeper...thanks!

I ended up signing up for all four, but wanted the keeper most of all. Now that a slot opened up with the expansion, I would happy to step aside in one of the default leagues if someone is shut out. Just let me know and I’ll eliminate my team there.
(If no one needs the slot, I’m happy to stay in.)

You guys should start up a dynasty league as well. Like, full rosters, prospects. Stuff like that.

But what are the details for the keeper leagues cause I joined the main one and the utility. What happens next year? How many players do we keep?

by ducks6607 on Sep 12, 2011 2:20 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I'm working on that now

I set the keeper number to three players per team. However, Yahoo!‘s format for distributing keeper players is rather unconventional. Instead of each team just choosing their keeper after the draft, they make me assign the keepers prior to the draft. As such, I’ve got a lot of work on my hands right now.

by Natesaduck on Sep 12, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I considered this

but I think it would be a little inconvenient for most. I try to eir on the side of the majority and I think having a really deep keeper league will help cater to the competitive side of the players (which is the point of that particular league).

If you are looking to join a smaller keeper league, I may create a 10-12 player roto keeper. Does that sound like something you might be interested in?
