Shanny throws the book at Wis

Shanahan hit Winiewski with an 8 game suspension resulting in a loss of 500k for James.  You can see the hit and some analysis from Puck Daddy here. I'm not really surprised at the suspension, but I am concerned for what it can mean for us in the future. I think Shanahan is strongly leaning on previous suspensions and is hell bent on showing that he is serious about suspending offenders.  As much as we'd like to think that our reputation for being a dirty team will someday go away, I have to think that the first Duck who does something suspension worthy will have an experience similar to Wisniewski.

Ummm…especially the R. Remember when he decided to use his skate as a weapon?

Oh, yes. I definitely remember that.

But they could all use a warning:)

Or especially the P. What if they start cracking down on Douche Tricks?

He's fancy. He'll go glove.

A douche trick: A goal, an assist, and a fight with Pavel Datsyuk!

It only counts as a douche trick if he spends the entire fight screaming " You didn’t deserve that Selke!"

I wonder how much Bobby Ryan’s stomp in playoffs would affect things if he had an incident but other from around the nhl like avery pronger cooke and even ovi who hav had multiple suspensions are probably looking at some serious time if they do something judged dangerous and illegal.

What about Blake? He looks poised to take a boarding penalty every game.

Just curious....

I’m not saying the Wis suspension wasn’t warranted….. but i truly had a laugh at how obvious Clutterbck was in selling it. I think there needs to be a suspension process for selling these kinds of calls…. god knows the predators and kings would have at least a suspension a game!

I don’t think Clutterbuck embellished at all. Wis sent a forearm at his head. I think it makes some sense that he would react as quickly as possible to avoid the hit. It was an awful hit and Wiz earned every game.

meh...

agree to disagree then…. I’ve played hockey my whole life, and in my experience, that looked to be embellished. Note that clutterbuck braces himself for the hit btw, just in case you couldn’t tell :)

also note...

that i didnt defend Wis at all, just attacked Clutterbucks acting

by Riley Popp on Sep 27, 2011 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t say that you did. To make my point the clearest as possible. I would say, it doesn’t matter whether or not Clutterbuck embellished. Wiz left his skates and sent his arm straight for the head. No matter how bad he hurt Cal, it’s clearly the type of action the league wants to target. It shows a clear intent to injure.

by Daniel AC on Sep 27, 2011 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I still don’t think he did a lot of embellishing. He got up fairly quickly. Wiz did catch him in the head, and he got up eventually. It’s hard to tell how long, because the video cuts, but I saw him get on all fours and start as if he was getting up.

by Daniel AC on Sep 27, 2011 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

no i agree..

with Wis’s suspension… my point is that Diving needs to be considered suspendable with this new punishment being tossd out you know? Consider that it is directly affecting salaries now so embellishment could, if you can see it this way, cause for a longer suspension in a lot of cases so it needs to be cracked down on now before it becomes a viable tactic for teams to use to “draw” longer suspensions.

I hope that made sense.

by Riley Popp on Sep 27, 2011 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I think suspending for diving is hard. It’s hard to tell how much they embellish a hit. Maybe they just lost balance or lost an edge. It is hard to tell if someone dove, or they just can’t stay on their skates as well.

Ok, Riley. I see your point now. I clearly was confused about what you were getting at. I sort of agree with you, but I think David makes a fair point about enforcement. I don’t know how the league could ever enforce that policy.

by Daniel AC on Sep 27, 2011 4:08 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

To me it looks like Clutterbuck saw him coming in and tensed up. I don’t really think its acting though, just a natural response to a big man running into you.

Hey... Commish!

Can we add a Stat Category in our Fantasy Games for “Suspensions”?
Those of us with Duck players in our line-ups would certainly appreciate that !
Food for thought.

Shanny drops the ball

He gave a 2 regular season game suspension to Clark MacArthur for an illegal elbow to the head. He is arguable the first skill player, aside form Wiz who has a history, to be tested in these proceedings and instead of the 5 games that seemed to be the norm he got a measly 2… I call fumble, but that’s just my opinion. I didn’t see this hit and the video hasn’t been released yet, so here’s hoping he has a good explanation.
