Firesale - Not the way to go

Today, apparently Bob Murray told the media that he is putting everyone on the roster up for sale except Selanne and Koivu. It may just be a motivational tactic, but if it isn't I think there are two main points about this: First, this is a clear sign from the GM that he does not believe in his own work, namely the construction of the roster. If anything says more firmly "fire me now", I don't know. Secondly, I think it would be a huge mistake.

The core of this team with Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan, Koivu, (Selanne), Fowler, Sbisa, Visnovsky, Hiller is a very strong core that I think almost no other team can really match (except maybe the Penguins) in terms of marquee players. Add a new and successful coach (that we have now) and I can hardly see this team not perform in the future. The only thing that is needed is a valid and strong checking line like we had in 2007 and this is what Murray has failed at. Plus you can always debate if the defense does not actually need a Pronger/Niedermayer/Weber type of player. But I do not think trading Getzlaf for Giroux (even if that was possible) would help at all. This is one half, horrible, season, but it is not the end of the world....
