This Week in Ducks History: October 7th - October 13th

Ducks History gives us a painful reminder that we should be starting the current season any day now.... but we arent.

It was a pretty slow week in Ducks History, aside from a bunch of season openers, including the first game in franchise history. Of course that also means a lot of losses. The Ducks have historically been terrible in their season openers with a record of 14-4 all time.

Unfortunately there isn't much information on the Ducks first ever game floating around the interwebs other than the box score, and a terrible post from Rant Sports that ran earlier this week (which I'd rather not link to) that illustrates everything Daniel hates about Detroit and other "Traditional Markets." The game isn't available on the NHL Vault, or else I would have already written more than anybody ever would want to know about it.

Even more unfortunately, the Ducks won't be adding to the list of season openers this week as we lose our first regular season games thanks to the Lockout. Sorry for the depressing intro, but I promise there's a happy ending.

This Week in Ducks History:

Oct. 7, 2011
Opened the 2011-'12 season with a 4-1 loss to Buffalo in Helsinki, Finland.

Oct. 7, 2008
Named D Scott Niedermayer captain for the second time. Niedermayer reclaimed his captaincy from Chris Pronger, who stood in as captain during Scotty's temporary retirement and the remainder of the 2007-'08 season.

Oct. 8, 1993
The first game in Mighty Ducks' franchise history is played at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, a 7-2 loss to Detroit. Future Duck, Aaron Ward scored the first goal at The Pond, and later in the game Sean Hill scored the first goal in Ducks History. This was lso one of the few games that featured the Ducks' short lived and ill advised secondary mascot: The IceMan.

Oct. 8, 1998
Traded D Doug Houda to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations.

Oct. 8, 2003
Opened the 2003-'04 season with a 4-1 loss at Dallas

Oct. 8, 2010
Opened the 2010-'11 season with a 4-0 loss at Detroit. This the game with the famous Perry-Datsyuk fight. Jonas Hiller also made a franchise record 24 saves in a single period.

Oct. 8, 2011
Finished the 2011 NHL Premiere Series with 2-1 shootout win over New York Rangers in Stockholm, Sweden.

Oct. 9, 1975
C Jason Krog born in Fernie, British Columbia, Canada

Oct. 9, 1975
RW Tony Tuzzolino born in Buffalo, New York, USA

Oct. 9, 1995
Opened the 1995-'96 season with a 4-3 loss at Winnipeg.

Oct. 9, 1996
Beat Chicago 2-0 in the third game of the season. This was the Ducks only win of October 1996, which stands as their record for fewest wins in a single month, and hopefully will stand for a long time. Somehow the Ducks not only made the playoffs after that slow start, but finished the season fourth in the Western Conference earning home ice in their first round series against Phoenix.

Oct. 9, 2008
Opened the 2008-'09 season with a 4-1 loss to San Jose.

Oct. 10, 1974
D Chris Pronger born in Dryden, Ontario, Canada

Oct. 10, 1996
Overcame a 6-2 deficit with 9:17 remaining in the third period to tie the defending Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche 6-6 in Denver, which still stands as the largest deficit the team has ever overcome.

Oct. 10, 1998
Opened the 1998-'99 season with a 1-0 loss at Washington.

Oct. 10, 2002
Opened the 2002-'03 season with a rare opening game win at St. Louis (4-3).

Oct. 11, 1982
D Mark Popovic born in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada

Oct. 11, 2002
Named Guy Hebert to the newly created position of Alumni Association Director.

Oct. 12, 1965
D Jean-Jaques "J.J." Daigneault born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
[Irrelevant personal fact: The bags under Daigneault's eyes were so pronounced that as a child I once wrote a short story for school about a hockey playing raccoon named J.J.]

Oct. 12, 1965
LW Todd Krygier born in Chicago Heights, Michigan, USA

Oct. 13, 1980
D Marc-Andre Bergeron born in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada

Oct. 13, 1971
D Sean O'Donnell born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Oct. 13, 1993
Recorded the first win in franchise history 4-3 over Edmonton at The Pond.

Ducks related #RandomNHLfacts from @NHLhistoryGirl:

On this date in 1992, #OriginalJets Teemu Selanne scored his first#NHL goal. (Not technically Ducks history, but anything Teemu related is Ducks related)

Finally, it's not technically history, or technically from @NHLhistorygirl or having anything to do with the Ducks (except the Teemu rule above), but this picture is full of such purity and goodwill I had to share it:

aawww RT @seangentille: Here's a photo of Teemu Selanne holding a kitten: http://i.imgur.com/wG6HH.jpg

Next time you start getting worked up about the lockout, think of that.
