Former Ducks backup netminder Dan Ellis started for the Charlotte Checkers against the prospects of his former team on the Norfolk Admirals. Ellis was replaced in the middle of the second period. His replacement allowed the Ads to get within 1 goal, but it wouldn't be enough. Norfolk loses 4-3.
Remember Dan Ellis? He was our backup goalie last season. He played a handful of games before injuring himself and required surgery. We were always told that he was 'weeks away'. Now he's thousands of miles away in Charlotte. Yes, the Ducks former backup netminder started Sunday for the Charlotte Checkers in the pre-season finale for the Norfolk Admirals.
In the first period, the Admirals out-shot the Checkers 13-11; however, they just couldn't get one past Ellis. Midway through the second, with the score at 3-0, Ellis was replaced in favor of John Muse. After only two minutes in net, Muse would allow in a Peter Holland goal on a pass from Devante Smith-Pelly. The Checkers would respond to the goal with score of their own less than two minutes after Holland's tally.
A little over a minute and half into the third period, Norfolk's Kenndal McArdle scooped up an unattended puck in the neutral zone and sent a wrist shot over the Checkers' netminder, bringing the Ads within 2 goals once again. The Admirals would continue their attempt at a comeback with a Chris Wagner goal from Emerson Etem and Ryan Lasch midway through the third taking the score to 4-3.
That is how it would end. It was a valiant effort, but ultimately not enough. This game concludes the pre-season for the Admirals with a record of 1-1-0-0.

The Ducklings open their season on Friday against the Baby Sharks. (Funny, the Ducks would have started that night against the Sharks, too...sniff.)
On a somewhat side note: In 'the something I never thought I'd do' category, I bought a 6-game AHL package for $30 on theahl.com. I watched the scrimmage on Saturday and the quality wasn't great, but I think that's because it was 'coach's camera' video. I'll report back after Friday's game. Mac Users will need Silverlight or Flip4Mac to watch. I prefer the latter.
