Sick of Disrespect!

Ever since New Year's all I've read on Yahoo Sports on every Ducks post is Canucks, Sharks, and just about every other team's fans talking about the Ducks emptying all their star players for some reason. Is it just me or are a lot of other fans think that we are some nothing expansion team that is just a yard sale for all the other teams?

Last time I checked the "Quacks", as some people call the team, have made the playoffs every year since 2003 except two seasons. Also in those six appearances, the Ducks, who are usually a low seed, have advanced against supposedly overly "superior" opponents four times, played in three Western Conference Finals, and appeared in two Stanley Cup Finals, taking one of the best of the teams of the last decade with several future Hall of Famer's to seven games and completely dominating the other against a team from a "real" hockey city. Plus all this post season success has happened in last eight seasons. And thats not counting the lockout season.

However, the supporters of the opposition completely ignore the fact that their home teams have very little success or outright failures around playoff time. The Kings, who's fans supposed whole mission in life is to conjure up every kind of ignorant and sophmourish insult against the Ducks, haven't advanced past the first round since 2001. Yep, it's the Ducks who suck. I hear Kings fans complain all the time about how Ducks fans brag about their Stanley Cup win and they need to move on. Well to be honest, I personally never need to use that tidbit of information because the fact that since the 1993-94 season, the Ducks first, the Kings, have won ONE playoff series. Frankly, that's just pathetic. I guess all the "Ducks Suck" chants and Cartman apperances, while very entertaining, doesn't translate into wins. Plus saying we brag about 2007 too much is the the coal calling the kettle black because I hear about the infamous Marty McSorely stick incident and that '93 Cup just as much if not more than the 2007 Cup, and sadly enough it is usually from people who weren't even born when it happened.

But I digress, at least the Kings have been to a Cup. Nothing is more irritating than listening to Sharks fans. Oh yeah they've won more Pacific Division titles than any team in NHL history, but I'd rather have my team be the 8th seed and get bounced out in the 2nd round than be the perennial choke artists of the Western Conference and either lose to a team in the first round who had to win 11 out of 13 at the end of the season to even make the playoffs or completely fall apart when it matters most. And the Canucks are even worse because they have the potential to not only win a single Cup but be a dominating team in the vein of 70's Montreal teams or, more recently, the Red Wings. Yet still year after year the Sedin Sisters and 3 time most overpaid goaltender of the year Roberto Luongo have tasted bitter disappointment at the hands of less talented teams such as the Bruins, Blackhawks, and (gasp) the Ducks.

Unfortunetly, despite this overwhelming case against these teams and the vastly superior resume of the Ducks, these "real" fans continue to boast about their teams as locks for a Cup victory season after season and that the Pond is full of nothing but ignorant bandwagon fans who never show up for games unless its playoff time. But hey I'll just sit in a sea of black and silver or teal and black, rocking my orange and black 3rd jersey and my backwards Mighty Ducks snapback, and listen to this crap and laugh to myself because since the Kings, Canucks, and Sharks have been around a lot longer than the Ducks and have all yet to taste Finals glory, I like to think of the Ducks as a high school freshman who slept with the hottest senior chick that all the senior jocks have been after for years but have rejected them time after time. So yeah we may have a Cup but the one thing I want is just an ounce of respect from other fans and the hockey media but that may never happen. Oh well maybe coming back from 20 points down to make the playoffs may open a few eyes.

Great post and I have been thinking the same thing.

You’re the fan of a mid-market team that was established so Disney could make more money off a successful movie. There’s no living that down. I wouldn’t take the disrespect personally. It has less to do with us as a franchise than it does with the shortcomings of others. Being the better franchise means not having to worry about it.

Good points.

Yeah we will never live the Disney thing down. Thing is the Samuelis have been great owners that have really invested in bringing hockey to OC. The Rinks program, high school hockey, and youth hockey in OC have really started to grow the game. In September I saw something for the first time ever in my 30 years in Newport. It was kids playing outside and they were playing hockey. One was wearing #1 and he was trying to keep a young #9 from getting a goal. This has always been a baseball town. The last time any kids around here were playing hockey in the streets, I was one of them. So what does this have to do with the post? Well the Samuelis dont get enough credit from around the NHL. Neither do the Ducks front office and players. They are in a small market with a limited budget and they have put a good product on the ice most years. Yeah we bitch and moan about the team from time to time (or all the time) but overall this is a pretty good team to be a fan of. We are lucky to have owners that care about a game that they fell in love with and want to grow in Orange County. 20 years from now this will be a great hockey market if it continues to grow. With the expansion of Ducks hockey in SD county, it should only make this teams fan base stronger. This team is special, they do amazing things with limited money but they are building something here. They are building a hockey town. Will it ever rival the Angels, not likely, but this can be a special market none the less. The fans of other teams should give the Ducks alot more credit then they have.

I don’t see your point. Can you link that to why other fans think Anaheim fans are ignorant of hockey, or don’t respect our franchise. I feel like you’re an atheist talking to Christians about why faith is irrational. Of course, Anaheim hate isn’t founded on anything, that’s why it’s hate. It’s one of the enjoyable things about sports in my opinion. I have enjoyed this franchise, and, please don’t get mad at me Robby, that’s why I have disliked Murray so much. I greatly appreciate the work of the Samuelis, but I don’t expect that to affect the opinions of fans from other teams.

God dam...

I kid. I understand why you hate Murray. I really do.

I was kidding too. I’m afraid my sarcasm doesn’t quite come across online.

Thanks for the comments

I agree with your guys points as well. But after all if it wasn’t for the Mighty Ducks movies I wouldn’t be a fan of this team. I saw them when i was 4 and i’ve been a fan ever since. But I believe the best thing Disney ever did was the logo and colors.

Hate the fact that the Ducks were getting disrespected by NHL media folks at TSN and SN, and then now you see people like Darren Millard post on Twitter that “he called it”, when the Ducks didn’t even get a second of air-time back in December when we were all believing. It’s cool though, we all know what the Ducks are capable of, and we’ve been clamouring for the playoffs since 14th place. Right?

We did hit 30th place for a day around late december I think. It’s already been a huge bounceback

P.S. the Bruins is UCLA, go Ducks!

Actually it was for about 4 hours. CLB gained a point and then we gained one later that night. We have not spent a whole 24 hrs at # 30

In the days of newspapers it might as well never have happened. So let’s just sweep that black eye under the rug

Where

Did you get your retro snapback?! I can’t find them in any stores!

by SoCal12 on Feb 16, 2012 10:17 PM PST reply actions

Ebay my friend

The Ducks are one the only teams who haven’t released new merchandise with their retro colors and logo. Now thats a mixed blessing because one we dont’ have 13 year old douchebags wearing our teams hats who don’t even like hockey (i.e. every kid at the mall in a Kings or Red Wings hat) but that also makes the ones out there very valuable. Most go anywhere from $50 to almost $200. I got mine for $20 and that was practically highway robbery.

I was trying to hold back but I can't

The East Coast disrespect is annoying but I understand it.. They just have better fans.. The media coverage is amazing.. Do I ever think that hockey will be a thing in southern California? Probably not but Samuelis are doing a great job expanding.. His business savvy is paying off from building within.. LA is a great market.. I’m not going to lie.. I like the kings but I’ve become a better ducks fan over the years.. Gretzky got me watching hockey on ESPN Wednesday night hockey.. The only reason I like the ducks over the years was because of Teemu Selanne.. My uncle told me a story about Teemu.. He was in Finland and it was poring rain.. He got on the bus to the next game and he saw a kid.. Decked in Selanne gear outside crying getting drenched in the rain because he missed teemu.. Classy Teemu told the bus driver to stop and gave the kid his stick jersey ect.. And that’s what got me.. And well other than the goals.. (Should of put this on the Teemu posts) But fans are going to talk shit because our fans do suck.. But blogs rinks colleges will make them more better fans.. Yes we will get shit from SJ LA not only because they are rivals but because there fans are loyal.. Only wealthy people can afford to have there children play hockey on CA.. I like the passionate fans here but when I went back to Chicago last Jan and every pond I saw kids playing ice (not roller) hockey.. Until we have that let’s take our focus off the fans and direct that into the ice and make the PONDA center a great place to play for our players.. I’m tired of blaming fans just scream onto the ice and when we break their hearts on a last minute goal give the enemies fans a high five ha ha

I laughed, too. You should have written this using a more respectable user name — I would have read further. :)
