Seriously
I couldn’t believe when I read this. I’m sorry, but I was under the impression Nashville needed offense not another quality Defensive Dman. Maybe this is a way to strengthen the team but also prepare for a departure of Suter or Weber during the offseason?
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 11:56 AM PST up reply actions
I actually read an article the other day saying that past Weber/Suter Nashville doesn’t have anything but young tested Guys on the blueline. This is a big move for them and it doesn’t prevent them from adding offensively. You have to imagine their first will come into play. Exciting time to be a Nashville Fan IMO.
I suppose this helps in terms of Gill becoming a UFA, therefore they get more $ towards Weber/Suter, but I can’t believe they had to trade a young forward, from Tennessee no less. Gill is good, but Poile got fleeced in this trade.
It really depends on how they feel how good Geoffrion will be. Hes had 40 NHL games and about 17 points but has only 3 in 20 this year.
Thats what the pick is conditional on
Geoffrion needs to play 40 or more games next season in order for the 5th to go to Nashville.

perhaps a defender for a forward trade is in the works for them. wonder what it would take to pry ellis away?
by BennyLightning on Feb 17, 2012 4:58 PM PST up reply actions
Everyone keeps saying
Some sort of Blum for someone (I heard Hemskey on TSN). They have a lot of defensive talent back there, and if Suter, Weber, and Gill are all shutdown top 4 guys it makes sense to keep Ellis and move Blum
by Kevin Riach on Feb 18, 2012 12:44 PM PST up reply actions
I saw that after i wrote it.
Either way we have some forward we could package for this. Blum may not have the skating that ellis does but hes a good size and should be good in the future. Would be a good player to look at, although we have to through in more to the deal than a Hagman/Blake to do it.
Still they need forwards and we have some in excess, especially with DSP due to return (unless he goes back to junior)
by BennyLightning on Feb 18, 2012 3:38 PM PST up reply actions
I’m not sure if we have anything that would fit this type of trade. We only have high level forwards (Ryan and Getzlaf) or low level forwards (Blake and Hagman). What Nashville is looking for is a mid-level talent. A Hemskey or Rutuu and we really don’t have anyone like that on this team. If they were looking for mid-level Dmen then we would be set, because our entire D corp is made of mid-level guys.
Gill and a 5th but who’s counting. Still a pretty good return. Wonder if this and the Philly getting Grossman earlier increase Lydmans value.
Honestly
I don’t know if Lydman has any value right now. Who do you think is out there that really would make a move for him? Maybe Buffalo takes him back (due to familiarity and success there) in exchange for Regher and we just swallow the extra salary for the rest of the season.
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:01 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t know, From what I heard Regher is one of few Buffalo players retaining his value. But the teams that missd out on Gill/Grossman may consider Lydman a consolation prize.
"retaining value"
They announced just 5 days ago they were looking to move him and Gaustad. Value to who? And what do they hope to get back in return?
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:12 PM PST up reply actions
I’ll try and find it. I thought it was somewhere on Buffalo News, but maybe it was some rumor on like Ottawa Sun. I’m not sure the validity of either…..
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:19 PM PST up reply actions
My bad, yes it was GIll and a 4th.
And I believe this leaves Lydman as one of the few affordable defensive defensemen left on the trade market. Good news for us.
Affordable to who?
I think the other teams interested in Gill and Grossman were Chicago and Detroit. I really don’t see either of them taking his contract. Maybe I’m wrong?
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:11 PM PST up reply actions
Lydman only makes about .750 more then those guys. these teams have plenty of cap space to cover that.
I was talking more in terms of contract vs production. I’m sure they could take his contract, but would they want to for the player they are getting?
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:15 PM PST up reply actions
Lydman has more points and plays more minutes than either Grossman or Gill. Can play top 2 when he is playing well (proved this last year) but otherwise a strong bottom 4 defensmen.
True
I just feel like his play this year has been so bad, and haven’t heard anything about teams interested in him. Maybe I’m just undervaluing him.
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:26 PM PST up reply actions
I think that is more a result of the fact that he has another year on his contract and he does make more than most guys being talked about. Though I have to wonder if we really want to move him at this point. If we acquired Schultz I would say yes. But right now I would worry about messing with the Locker room mojo.
Good point. Theres still a lot hockey before the deadline, I think if the team keeps it up Murray wisely just doesn’t make a move. He said before when he hired BB that he believed in this team and the way it was constructed, I really don’t think he wants to trade anyone.

Daniel brace yourself
From the CBS article: “Personally, I wouldn’t say Boudreau would be deserving of the Adams. No, I’d vote Bob Murray for general manager of the year over Florida’s Dale Tallon. Remember, it wasn’t the hiring of Boudreau that was the impetus for this surge, it was Murray threatening to trade everybody but Selanne and Saku Koivu. Talk about a kick in the pants.”
Bob Murray for GM of the year………dear god the world is coming to an end in 2012.
This is what happens when people focus on results rather than process. Murray makes that threat every year. How you gonna give someone the GM of the year award for doing the same thing he does every year?
Also, I did/do competitive speech and I’ve seen plenty of bad speakers win national titles. It wouldn’t surprise me if Murray won. Just goes to show people value results over the process, which is a mistake.
by Daniel AC on Feb 17, 2012 12:26 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I agree
Its ridiculous to put his name out there, but its also ridiculous that apparently Dave Tallon is the front runner. I don’t think either of those guys have made great moves this year, but then again I’m not sure I can name a GM who’s really done any better.
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:34 PM PST up reply actions
I think it is ridiculous that his name gets thrown in for making a threat to his players. That is crazy. As for Tallon, I can see this actually. He traded for Campbell, and got the FA s he needed to field a competitive team. No one expected Florida to be anywhere near where it is today. Bryan Murray claim to fame is his coach who has worked wonders in Ottawa.
I just feel like Tallon kinda lucked out, much like Bob Murray did last year. All of his talent is over performing and making him look really good, but how long will that last? How long before some of those contracts look real bad. And even then, its not like Florida is playing all that well. They are benefiting heavily from a terrible, terrible division. Playing Tampa, Carolina, and the Jets for most of your games certainly helps. The fact that Washington is also playing terrible makes it a lot easier for them to be where they are.
For me, if Colorado makes it into the playoffs I think you give it to them. Lowest cap team making the playoffs? Thats pretty impressive. If not Nashville (again), Ottawa, or even St. Louis are all more deserving that either Tallon or Murray.

Oh come on. He’s lucky at best. For every Fowler and Lubo, there is always a Foster, Sutton and everyone picked up on waivers (save Hagman)

One big trade I hope goes down:
Buffalo trades Ryan Miller to Chicago for Patrick Kane. It fills both teams needs in their respective positions. It would be a cool one-for-one blockbuster that seldom happens anymore.
I just don’t think it makes that much sense. Kane is another Winger, Buffalo really needs a center, not a winger who can sort of play center. I think Nabokov is a better option for Chicago and costs way less.
True
If only NYI would grow a brain and sell him. Also Kane is a young superstar, him and Toews aren’t going anywhere. Why trade for an older goalie that has struggled all season?
by Kevin Riach on Feb 17, 2012 12:14 PM PST up reply actions
Goaltending hasn’t been that much of a problem for Chicago during their slump. The defense is leaving Emery/Crawford out to dry and the Hawks are on a losing streak because those guys aren’t standing on their head. Very similar to what happens to the Ducks when Hiller has an off night, except they’ve had an off month.
Fight on!
by Shackleford on Feb 17, 2012 12:41 PM PST up reply actions
Agree with this.
Crawford was heralded as Chicago’s goalie of the future (after Huet flamed out and Niemi was traded), but I think that some of their fans have been too willing to throw him under the bus. He’s having an off year, but I think he’ll be back to form soon enough.
As for Emery, he’s played really, really well over the past couple of years. It’s too bad that his injury has prevented him from being a bonafide NHL starter.
by light_the_lamp on Feb 17, 2012 12:57 PM PST up reply actions
Exactly, and it seems that the Chicago GM agrees with this. He’s stated many times that they aren’t looking for goaltending and defense/2nd line center are their priority right now. And I actually believe Emery can be a low level starter in the NHL. He definitely needs a backup that can take a handful of starts to ease the load, but he was solid in his time here and a lot better than some of the goalies playing as starters today.

Look at what has reared its ugly head again! A former player bashing how the organization is run. Who would’ve guessed.
When I read this, all I could hear in my head was “wah wah wah how dare they trade me!”
