Open Gameday Thread: Columbus Blue Jackets @ Anaheim Ducks
Columbus Blue Jackets at Anaheim Ducks, Feb 3, 2012 7:00 PM PST
This could be the most difficult game preview I've ever had to write. What do you say about this game? The Ducks have been bad a majority of the first half, and are lucky that Columbus has been even worse. It's the polar opposite of the Superbowl - the Suckybowl.
The Ducks should annihilate Columbus tonight, but I have a feeling they won't. It's not because they aren't a marginally better team. It's because the Ducks don't know how to play to the level of teams worse than they are. It's easy for the team to get motivated for a challenge like San Jose or Philadelphia, but how do you get psyched to play a bottom dweller? In these games, the Ducks relax and it's the worst possible thing they could do.
There is one bright spot, though. Jason Blake is back! It's apparent that the Ducks can only survive one game without having him in the lineup before getting spanked like they did on Wednesday. I still don't get it, but whatever. At least we're not Columbus.

Lets go Ducks we don't want to lose to the worst team in the league.
Side Question for those in the thread: Is there anyone interested at all in the fantasy baseball league? You don’t have to have played before.
yay Blake!
Who’s starting tonight? I was thinking maybe Deslauriers should start to ready Hiller but this is a game we can’t lose.
P.S. the Bruins is UCLA, go Ducks!
by BruinDanny on Feb 3, 2012 6:29 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Well we can't lose any games.
I think if there was a game to rest him it would be this one.
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 6:40 PM PST up reply actions
Well we don’t want to lose Wednesday then lose today to the jackets. That would just crush morale and probably kill all our momentum
P.S. the Bruins is UCLA, go Ducks!

A couple things totally unrelated to tonight's game
1) Finally, for the first time in almost 2 weeks, I don’t have to go to work while a Ducks game is on. It kinda sucks to have to record it and watch it when i get home at about midnight
2) I posted a fanshot yesterday about the Kings game against Columbus and I am not sure if it has been seen yet. I am just curious about the AC community’s opinion on the subject, so if you feel like putting forth your personal opinion, go check it out.
Well welcome back.
I saw the play your talking about but what is the controversy?
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 6:59 PM PST up reply actions
The clock stops at 1.8 for about a full second before restarting and running
The Kings scored with .4 left to win the game
ah ok thought it had been something like that but couldn't remember.
But I don’t think that they could do anything though.
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 7:08 PM PST up reply actions
Ban them from the playoffs this year?
Ah, but that’s just wishful thinking
Yea don't think thats even a consideration lol.
But dont we wish.
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 7:11 PM PST up reply actions
I know
It wouldn’t be a big deal to me had it been an extension of a lead or a goal that didn’t matter. But it was a tie game and that goal was scored with less than a second to go in the 3rd period. That would have cost the Kings 1, and possibly 2 points. Instead they got 2 points. I don’t know about you, but a 4 point swing in the wrong direction for the Kings would be much needed for the Ducks
oh I know.
The only thing I think they could do but wouldn’t do is say that goal was no good and call the game a tie by default.

GOALL TEEMU!!!
Huge goal for the team. Had to get off to a hot start. Must take advantage of crappy goaltending.

Hope the Ducks can help tonight :)

Getzlaf
He’s big and his brother is a pro football player in the CFL so maybe it runs in the family?
Parros
Big, mean and American (not many foreigners in the NFL)
Fight on!
Sbisa got nailed
I’m thinking Cololbus is gonna play an edgy game to try and redeem themselves from the last time we played
Stranger things have happened
I refuse to give up hoping for a post season until we’re officially outta contention
Agreed. I’m not giving up until we’re out either. We’ve been playing really well (famous last words I know) and that loss to Dallas was just a product of not having practiced much for over a week thanks to the ASB.
ahh
Ok got me there was just my thoughts

It's not neaerly as fun to watch
If you feel like there is no hope at all
Well I would wait for trade deadline. If we’re not any closer at that point we rebuild and take it easy for the rest of the season. If we’re seriously pushing I say keep the main guys around and maybe trade some prospects or bottom 6 for a d man.
P.S. the Bruins is UCLA, go Ducks!
by BruinDanny on Feb 3, 2012 7:40 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Well there are a total of 62 points out there still up for grabs. Currently we are 12 points out. So there really is still a shot but they are starting to dwindle as the top 8 are not losing a ton right now.
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 7:40 PM PST up reply actions
The top 6 are almost definitely in at this point.its really a fight for the last 2. Also sweet save hillsy

I was saying that we should’ve just switched out the ducks roster with the crunch roster. That was what it felt like last night.

by BruinDanny on Feb 3, 2012 7:48 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I don’t know. From what I heard only one of the goals was really his fault and we don’t really have a well tested back up but at some point when you’re down by that much a new face in goal could change something.

Hey guys, I try not to do this sort of thing too often, but would you mind voting on this interactive map?
http://www.esri.com/news/maps/2012/elections/superbowl-map/index.html
It basically asks which team you want to win the Super Bowl and which candidate you’d want to watch the game with. You can then see the geographic breakdown of the answers to these questions.
If you could also share this with anyone you think would enjoy it, I’d appreciate it.

I do not like Jason Balke on the top PP
And that;s a reason why right there. You’ve got to bury that
by PhantomPretender on Feb 3, 2012 8:36 PM PST reply actions
I know we joke about Blake being the key for this team and he definitely has a role, but god damn he’s a horrible finisher. If he had a half decent shot he’d still be a 30 goal scorer with the other parts of his game
by bhlloy on Feb 3, 2012 8:38 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions
I just don't like him on the PP, especially the top unit
He’s not a great passer and he’s a terrible finisher. Not really sure what skill set he brings to the table.

2ND INTERMISSION QUESTION
With the Ducks surprising turn around, do you foresee any major changes in the summer?
to be honest
The thought of a pred on the ducks doesn’t exactly excite me too much but someone like weber or Suter would undeniably be a good addition to the d. What are the chances of Suter going ufa or will he be resigned?
P.S. the Bruins is UCLA, go Ducks!
by BruinDanny on Feb 3, 2012 8:53 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I don’t think Nashville trades him. They’re in too good a spot right now. If I’m Nashville, I’m hoping for a deep run to keep him interested in the team. Another first round exit and he’ll probably walk. They might trade his rights at the draft but that usually only nets you a mid to late round pick or two.
I don't think we are likely to see any Major changes.
Obviously if an offer is made that can’t be passed up its possible but I don’t at this time think they are going to be actively shopping the big names.

Speaking of SB who do you guys think are going to win it?
by MoralesHomers on Feb 3, 2012 8:46 PM PST up reply actions
Can’t remember being less excited about a SB. Two east coast media darlings and teams I don’t particularly like. I think the Giants pull it out again because the Pats defense is pretty horrible and if you want to beat the Pats you do it with a great pass rush.
by bhlloy on Feb 3, 2012 8:52 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions
Giants are just too hot
I have no love for either team, but I think the Giants win it.
And thanks for voting. The employer appreciates it.

what’s your bands name?
Its up for discussion to be changed right now
That’s why I will definitely bring up your suggestion. But right now, its Fallen but not Forgotten
I dont know why we broke up the third line from the last couple of games when they were so hot. Blake and Cogs are the exact same player. That’s bad coaching IMO
by bhlloy on Feb 3, 2012 8:58 PM PST via iPhone app reply actions
Damn Perry
I wish he could’ve handled that pass
Top line still thinks it is vacation time. Getzlaf with a shooting opportunity ten feet out passes it up to look for bobby who isn’t even paying attention and it’s an easy clear.

Well I think that just may be the dagger
They only have 3 out of 6 points post-ASG.
by PhantomPretender on Feb 3, 2012 9:34 PM PST reply actions
Saw that coming as soon as the two on one was forming
It would be nice if anyone on this team other than Teemu could ever finish a fucking shot and bury their scoring opportunities. If missing open nets by an inch was a stat, we would lead the league.
Fight on!
Those three goals really are a microcosm of our season. Can’t clear a rebound from the front of our net, goal. Take a bad penalty partially because we can’t clear the zone, goal. Then a horrible turnover, nobody covering leads to a 2 on 1, let the guy walk in, goal.
Hate to go all chicken little (as I was accused of after the Dallas game) but it’s probably too big an ask at this point. Fail for Nail is back on. If we’d have stayed hot it’s one thing, but we are looking exactly like we did pre-Boudreau right now.
For whoever rights the post-game article, you only need 1 word
Disgusting. Or fuck, your choice

I know I mentioned it earlier, but I still don’t understand. We have a third line that is red hot – basically out entire offensive output since the break. Beleskey has been our best player in those two games. So what happens – we demote Beleskey for his efforts, and put Jason Blake and Andrew Cogliano on the same line who are the exact same player. Result, third line doesn’t do anything and gets overpowered for most of the game.
Blaming the third line?
I’d blame the 1st line, the PP unit, and Fowler’s play all before I blame the third line. Where they better with Beleskey there? Yes! But my guess is that they are playing Blake to use him as trade bait. The fact is people used to say that the team would go whatever way the top 6 went. Well now we have a solid bottom 6 and top 6 just completely dried up. It just wasn’t our year to begin with and I’m ready for next season to come as soon as possible.
If we lose a few more in the next week, Murray goes into sell mode. I may take some heat for saying this but I think there is something fundamentally wrong with RPG. I don’t know what it is. None of them is playing like the players they have been in the past. I honestly wonder if there is too much talent or ego on that line for it to function properly.
I’m wondering if it’s not time to split that line up again. I actually think Carlyle had the right idea putting Beleskey up with the twins, just his game wasn’t ready for it yet. If he’s playing like he has the last few games, give it a shot. That line needs somebody to create some space and get in on the forecheck for them – when those passes are connecting and the cycle is working they look great but that’s been too far and few between this season. If beleskey can’t do it, maybe you look to Smith-Pelley once he’s back or maybe you look to pick somebody up in the offseason with a bit more skill.
That frees up Ryan to be the guy on the third line who gets to benefit from Bonino and Cogs/Blake hustle plays and finish all those opportunities that go begging. I think it could work. Even if it doesn’t, it might shake the RPG line up again, right now they don’t look interested.
