Ducks Select Defenseman Kenton Helgesen with 187th Pick

D, KENTON HELGESEN, CALGARY (WHL)

Justin's Take:

The penultimate pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft is yet another defenseman. The Anaheim Ducks make Kenton Helgesen their sixth round pick, and first Calgary Hitmen player selected since 2003, when they chose Ryan Getzlaf 19th overall in the 1st round. Helgesen's skill-set plays out to be a shutdown defenseman, but also has some offensive upside. The strongest point of Helgesen is his ascension in the minor-league hockey ranks, taking only two years to move from midget to Calgary of the WHL. Much like Max Friberg last year, this might be a very good late-round pick for the Ducks.
