More Roster Moves: Holland and Maroon Up, Etem Down

Jeff Gross

In a bit of a head-scratcher, the Ducks have sent down Etem and called up two of Norfolk's leading scorers.

After sending Rickard Rakell back to Plymouth last night/earlier today, the Ducks announced this afternoon that they have recalled left wing Patrick Maroon and center Peter Holland from the Norfolk Admirals. Emerson Etem was sent down to Norfolk in a corresponding move.

On paper, bringing up Maroon and Holland essentially replaces Etem and Rakell from a purely positional standpoint. That said, this move (at least the Maroon-for-Etem part) has me scratching my head a bit.

In 45 games with the Ads this season, Maroon has 13 goals and 30 points (and a staggering 108 PIM). I haven’t had any luck finding TOI stats for Maroon, but I believe he has been playing in a top-line role for the Norfolk for much of the season (especially since the lockout). Maroon also had a cup of coffee with the Ducks last season, appearing in 2 games and recording 2 PIM. Maroon had a disastrous training camp with the Ducks this season, and while he has shown a tantalizing mix of grit and scoring, off-ice issues have seemingly taken some of the shine off his potential.

Holland made the big-league club out of camp, but managed to appear in just one game before he was sent back to Norfolk earlier this season. Holland has 16 goals and 35 points in 39 games with the Ads this season, and was leading Norfolk in both points and goals. I was pretty surprised when Holland was sent down the first time, and I’m happy to see him back with the big club. He’ll give the Ducks some additional center depth, presumably in a bottom-6 role.

I do not, however, understand why Etem was demoted back to the AHL. I’m sure there’s an ice-time explanation in here somewhere (he averaged 9:13 over 8 games), but Etem had recently climbed the lineup to a role on the wing with either of the top two lines. While he only recorded 2 points in 8 games (both assists), Etem was a plus-1 and his speed clearly played at the NHL level. He may have been a bit tentative (he only had 6 shots in 8 games), but I loved his hustle and I absolutely thought he deserved to stick. As Daniel has noted, though, Bruce did have a tendency to leave Etem on the bench when games were close.

As for where Holland and Maroon play, it’s anyone’s guess. I can see Maroon anywhere from a complimentary piece for the Twins (MPG line!) or as a replacement for Brad Staubitz (please, please, please). Holland will likely be confined to a bottom-6 role, which I’m not convinced is the best use of someone who profiles as a 2C. Either he or Bonino will likely have to play the wing (since there are only so many center spots to go around), but unless he’s getting 12-15 minutes a night, I’m not sure why the Ducks would call him up.

At any rate, three people just had their Valentine’s Day plans blown up.
