Norfolk Blanks Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 1-0

Igor Bobkov gets his second shutout of the season in a defensive minded show down between division rivals.

Final Score: Admirals 1, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 0

First Period Recap: Early on in this game it was decided that it was going to be an offensively inept a defensive kind of night. Both teams played the same 20 minutes, each had five shots and two penalties. Technically Luca Caputi's penalty at the 20 minute mark doesn't count towards the first period but regardless, there were no power play goals, or any other goals for that matter.

Second Period Recap: In the second frame it became blatantly obvious what this team looks like without its top three scorers, Kyle Palmieri, Peter Holland, and Patrick Maroon. The Admirals had just four shots in 20 minutes and had to kill a full ten minutes of penalties, which doesn't exactly help the offense. Meanwhile the Penguins got off 14 shots and Igor Bobkov stopped every single one.

Third Period Recap: The Admirals finally broke the 0-0 tie just 3:17 into the final period. Brayden Irwin scored his very first goal as a Norfolk Admiral with Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Sami Vatanen getting the assists. This proved to be enough in this odd game as Wilkes-Barre was unable to solve Bobkov.

Norfolk killed two penalties midway through the period and Rod Pelley took a minor with 1.1 second left that they killed easily (har har). Big Bobber came up with 32 saves on the night while the Admirals were held to a franchise low 12 shots on net. Altogether they killed eight penalties and couldn't convert on any of the three power play chances they had.

Emerson Etem only had two shots on net in his first game back since being reassigned by Anaheim. Four other players also had two shots, Vatanen, Dan Sexton, Jordan Hendry, and Josh Brittain. The only other two shots were from Devante Smith-Pelly and Brayden Irwin who had the lone goal. That is a pretty pathetic effort.

The Good: A shutout for Bobkov is always a good thing, I think this guy is pretty hard to beat when he has confidence.

The Bad: The Admirals almost played an entire period of hockey on the penalty kill, you just can't do that these days. It is like playing with a loaded gun.

The Ugly: Holland, Maroon, and Palmieri playing in the NHL could seem like a good excuse to only have 12 shots, but other players need to step up and just shoot the dang puck at the net.

Most Valuable Duckling:

3rd MVD: Toss Up- This could be either Sami or PL3. I give the slight edge to Sami since he is an actual prospect but PL3 is one of the hottest offensive weapons on this Admirals team right now, or so it seems.

2nd MVD: Brayden Irwin- Still not to sure on who this guy is, but he scored the only goal of the night on his only shot of the night. [Ed. Note: Vasily Zaytsev -CK]

1st MVD: Igor Bobkov- A 32 save shutout in the first game of a 3-in-3 weekend series over a divisional rival that all Admirals fans hate intensely? Very nice.

Next Game: Saturday, February 16th in Connecticut at 7:00pm
