Norfolk hung in there with Adirondack last night through two periods, but couldn't hold off the Phantoms in the third.
Final Score: Norfolk 2, Adirondack 5
First Period Recap: The Admirals stayed with Adirondack for the first period by playing a slow and steady pace. It wasn't perfect though, as Matt Mangene scored his first goal of the season for the Phantoms after Matt Smaby took a penalty for interference. That ended up being the only goal of the opening frame. The Phantoms out shot the Admirals 10-8 and killed their two penalties.
Second Period Recap: The middle frame was largely uneventful until about the last five minutes. Peter Holland scored a power play goal 14:59 into the period to tie the game up 1-1. Luca Caputi got the only assist on the goal. The Phantoms went up 2-1 after Rob Bordson scored his fifth goal of the season with just over two and a half minutes left. The lead was short lived though as Dan Sexton tied it up again just :35 seconds later with Josh Brittain tallying the lone assist. The Admirals out shot the Phantoms 12-7 and only had to kill one penalty.
Third Period Recap: The final 20 minutes was a breeze for the Phantoms as the Admirals only put nine shots on goal. To be fair the Phantoms only had nine too. 6:46 into the period Jason Akeson, who had a goal waved off earlier, scored a power play goal while John Kurtz was off for hooking. While playing 4-on-4 due to Gabe Guntzel's ill timed interference penalty, Bordson scored his second of the night to put the Phantoms up 4-2. Then Shane Harper finished the game off with an empty netter after Guentzel couldn't keep the puck inside the offensive zone with over two minutes left to go in the game.
The Good: Peter Holland and Jordan Hendry are back! [Ed. Note: Not sure if those chickens are hatched yet, Holland may be on his way back up sooner rather than later. -CK]
The Bad: Holland went minus-3 and only had one shot on net. On the plus side, that shot did go in.
The Ugly: The Admirals first line was on the ice for every even strength goal.
3rd Icehole: Igor Bobkov- Let in four goals in a game that should have been easy for him
2nd Icehole: Patrick Maroon- After a strong weekend last week he goes -3 and has 1 shot on goal
1st Icehole: Gabe Guentzel- Took a bad interference penalty when the Admirals had a late power play and it lead to a Phantoms 4-on-4 goal. Then, as soon as he got out of the box and with an empty net he couldn't keep the puck in the zone and the Phantoms get an empty net goal.
Next Game: Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:00pm EST at Bridgeport
