It Took 'Em A While To Get There, Ads Earn 500th Franchise Victory in Shootout

Norfolk Admirals/John Wright

Dan Sexton sacrificed his stick and his face to get the Admirals to a 3-2 victory over the Providence Baby Bruins.

Final Score: Admirals 3, Bruins 2 (SO)

First Period Recap: The game started off with a bang with Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond fighting Tyler Randell in one of the longest fights I have personally seen. Both players latched on and then mutually decided to take their helmets off before the hurt their hands. The bout ended in a draw with both players being pretty gassed. 21 seconds later, Troy Bodie stepped in and fought Bobby Robins after he tried to start something with Mat Clark. Bodie was knocked off balance after taking a few punches to the noggin.

A couple minutes after the two fights, the Admirals scored on a 5-on-3 power play. On a Luca Caputi pass, Dan Sexton one timed the puck into the net, breaking his stick in half in the process. Sami Vatanen received the second assist giving him 23 on the season. The shots were even in the first 10-10. The Admirals went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed 3 penalties including a big 5-on-3.

Second Period Recap: The middle period was much more tame than the first 20 minutes with only two penalties being called. Of course they were both on the Norfolk Admirals and really made no sense, there can be no other way! The penalty killing squad stayed on top of their game though killing both of them.

The defense did break down a bit though. It allowed Christian Hanson to score his 7th goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Frederik Andersen couldn't get the puck covered but the defense wasn't there to help him out. He could only stand on his head for so long. The Admirals were out-shot 18-9.

Third Period Recap: The final frame was pretty evenly played and only one penalty was called - against the Admirals, duh.

The Bruins scored 9:24 into the period when Kevan Miller shot a puck in and it deflected off an Admirals defender and just got inside the post to put Providence up 2-1. Just over six minutes later, Brandon McMillan scored his fourth goal of the season and his first since Dec. 8. He was out healing from an injury which required surgery since Dec. 28 and returned on Feb. 15. Emerson Etem earned the primary assist and Sexton received the secondary assist, giving him a multi-point night. The game ended in regulation 2-2.

Overtime Recap: the Admirals were the only team to register shots on goal with 3. The Bruins had a 50 second power play to start off the OT but couldn't do anything; the Ads killed all 6 penalties on the night. The Bruins took a late penalty when former Hampton Roads Admiral (throwback!), Trent Whitfield high sticked the hell out of Sexton and apparently he broke two of his teeth. Strangely enough there was no blood so it was a 2 minute minor.

The game remained tied after overtime, leading to a shoot out:

**********

The Good: The Admirals get a much needed win against a quality opponent.

The Bad: The struggling Devante Smith-Pelly was a scratch tonight. He blocked a shot the previous game and it caught him on the back side of his knee, if I remember right.

The Ugly: Dan "Sexy" Sexton may now be less sexy if he did lose some teeth.

**********

Three Star Admirals:

3rd: Jordan Hendry - He played a better game tonight and scored the shoot out winner on his 29th birthday!

2nd: Dan Sexton - 1 goal, 1 assist, broke some teeth and his line played the best all night.

1st: Frederik Andersen- Stopped 37 of 39 shots and only allowed one score in the shootout.

Next Game: Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7:05pm ET, at Wilkes-Burry/Scranton Penguins
