Anaheim Calling Staff Playoff Preview - Stanley Cup Final

Raise your stick if your team knows how to score a powerplay goal! - Gregory Shamus

The Anaheim Calling Staff gives you our thoughts and predictions on the playoff series for all the marbles.

Yes, this is finally back. First and foremost I offer a note of apology to everyone out there who was hoping for some playoff analysis of the conference finals, as personal matters have been getting in the way lately but I'm finally back and ready to end this playoff prediction piece off with a bang.

So let's summarize how we did through the last two rounds. Remember, 5 points for getting the winner right, 10 for getting both the winner and number of games correct. First, reaching back to the Semi-finals which seem like so long ago now...

A few quick bits of snark from last round:

PIT vs. BOS

-"You already have 2 Cups, Jagr. Let Iggy get one." - Kristen
-"Too much Black and Gold in this series, and too much Milan Lucic." - Daniel
-"I like Chara & Rask. I LOVE Bergeron and Sidenberg. I still don't think they'll be enough to stop the Pens' insane forward depth." - Chris [Ed. Note: Holy F*** could I have been any more wrong!? -CK]

CHI vs. LA

-"I'm going to stop picking the team I WANT to see win. Go hockey Gods, do your thing!" - SK
-"Unless God intervenes, LA/Quick playing too good to lose /vomit" - Jen
-"Jonathan Quick is going to need to play the best series of his career if the Kings want to advance. For my money, the best series of his career just happened." - Derek

So that means going into this final round the scores are as follows:

Jen still leads thanks to her stellar quarterfinals round, however that has dwindled as Kristen, Chris, and myself all trail by only five points. However, it's still nearly anybody's game as this final round counts for double points; 10 for getting the winner right, and a whopping 20 if you get the winner and games correct. That means anybody but Derek can win this (sorry pal).

So let's get to it.

2013 Stanley Cup Final: (1)Chicago Blackhawks vs. (4)Boston Bruins

It's NBC's and league history snobs' collective dream come true: we have our first Original Six matchup in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1979. And to be honest I'm not really shocked either of these two are here.

The Chicago Blackhawks have been the team to beat since day one of this abridged season when they destroyed the Los Angeles Kings to ruin their banner raising ceremony (teeheehee!). What we didn't know while laughing hysterically at LA's massive cup hangover was that this would be the first of 24 straight games with at least a point for Chicago, snapping Anaheim's 2006-07 mark and putting them on pace to destroy the NHL's single-season points record (were this a full 82 game season). Despite falling back to Earth somewhat in the latter half of the season, Chicago went nearly uncontested at the top of the league, sealing the President's trophy with relative ease. Their only real scare of these playoffs came in the Conference Semi-finals as the Detroit Red Wings went up 3-1 in their series, and nearly pushed the Hawks out. However, Chicago battled back, forced game seven, and then won in overtime to drop-kick the Octopus lovers to the East. After train-wrecking the aforementioned Kings in five games in the Conference Finals (teeheehee! Again!), it's safe to say the Blackhawks look just as good now as they have all season.

On the other hand so do the Boston Bruins. Even though they made the playoffs as a 4-seed, the Bruins were clearly no pushover team. Despite being given an early scare by an incredibly tenacious Toronto Maple Leafs team, the Bruins rebounded from that seven-game-overtime heart attack and went on to stomp the New York Rangers and mercilessly sweep the Eastern Conference-favorite Pittsburgh out of the Conference Finals, allowing only two goals against the offensively-studded Penguins. And they're doing it on the heels of arguably the hottest goaltender in this year's playoffs- Tuukka Rask. The Finnish-born netminder boasts a whopping .985 save-percentage and a 0.44 goals-against average. Who needs Tim Thomas anyway?

Note once again that all of these picks were recorded before the start of game one.

-"Toews will be the best forward in this series and Keith will be the best defenseman. Rask will win the Conn Smythe for precisely those reasons." - Derek
-"Chicago totally deserves it...but Boston has Mr Momentum on their side." - SK
-"This is a complete stab in the dark for me, both teams are evenly matched and after those Conf. Finals anything could happen." - Chris
-"Rask does everything he can to keep the Bruins in it, but the Hawks are just too good." - Robby
-"The Bruins are a team of destiny and a bandaid for the city of Boston. Cup is for the marathoners, first responders and heroes." - Jen
-"Boston has the advantage in net, but Chicago will find a way to win." - Kristen
-"Las Vegas posts better odds of ‘Patrick Kane drunkenly punches civil servant within two days of series conclusion' than odds of Blackhawks winning." - Kyle

For the last two weeks of the season, let's sit back and enjoy some hockey before the dull months of summer.
